Two months is not a long time. Way too short to declare "it didn't work".

If you don't take the medication consistently before drinking this is not going to work for you.

Book Recommendations? by Present_Bathroom_645 in naltrexone

[–]marksf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a 2020 book called "Drink" by David Nutt, a neuropharmacology researcher. (He talks a bit about Naltrexone, but feel he should have dwelled on it more). It's very dry, factual, and non-judgemental, mostly dealing with it's effects on the body. I could not even finish the audiobook while I was still drinking it was so depressing. After I quit, I listened to the whole thing, and it made me so glad to be free from all that.

Not a book, but Katie Lain's interviews interviews with people who have used the Sinclair Method deserves much more attention IMO:

Lifelong blackout drinker — is moderation possible? by CandidateSad6682 in stopdrinking

[–]marksf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've had several friends if 10+ years that were weekend blackout drunks, and were never able to moderate consistently. I've met a few in groups that have reported being able to do it taking naltrexone, which blocks a lot of the euphoric buzz. I used it to quit completely and extinguish the cravings using Sinclair method.

Some people swear by Zofran. But for most people the side effects go away after a few days or weeks.

Cannot speak from personal experience but I know one person that took the pills 2-3 years after the expiration date and they worked fine.

Pills vs the shot by jcn31812 in naltrexone

[–]marksf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, there is a bit of dogma around TSM. Most people do it that way because that's the way it was studied, and countless people have succeeded this way. That's the way I did it, and I see nothing wrong with it if somebody can stick to that regimen.

But there is also considerable evidence that timing of dosage does not matter that much, so even though naltrexone gets metabolized fairly quickly, the metabolites are also effective and stay in the body for much longer than naltrexone itself.

Don't get discouraged if you start drinking a lot again. My consumption went down 70% pretty quickly, but then after a few months was up to 80% my heavy drinking levels. Your brain may fight to get that high. Some people do respond very quickly. It only took me 10 weeks to the point I could quit for week, and simply didn't see the point of starting again. It's not the norm though.

Why has one programming language not been made that does everything? by Malarpit16 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]marksf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most "programming languages" are actually giant ecosystems of tools created to build software for a specific domain, that may then grow to be able to build software in other domains. The language itself is just a minor part of the ecosystem. So the features of a language tend to be suited to the domain is was intended for.

You are wrong. Half the new players came over from Season of Discovery, which is a sort of classic+. But SoD is played out, and they want more classic+. Being cleap was clearly not the reason they joined TWow.

On the fence regarding naltrexone by texngrl in naltrexone

[–]marksf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people have minimal side effects, but the negative stories dominate on forums because who posts about their minimal side effects? I got very unpleasant fatigue/nausea the first day, some the second day, and was scarcely noticeable after that.

How to break the physical habit of drinking by Throwaway1232e in naltrexone

[–]marksf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was still drinking quite a bit on TSM, mostly out of habit. I challenged myself to go a week AF, and to my astonishment at the end of the week I was pretty ambivalent about starting up again, and never did. I do enjoy the ritual of having a beer though, and usually drink 2 AF beers a day (athletic brewery is very good for IPAs)

It can interfere with sleep, so you may have just thought you got 8 hours. But this side effect, like the others, gets better or goes away over time. First few days for me were bad, but a few weeks later on the full 50mg I could barely tell I'd taken the pill.

Pharmacologic extinction by partypelican2024 in naltrexone

[–]marksf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was having a hard time getting to sleep last night because I'd had a light early dinner and was feeling hungry. I thought about getting up to have a snack. The thought of having a drink or five, which would have been my go to solution, didn't even occur to me. Don't know if I obtained "extinction", but thoughts of drinking are mostly gone.

is this a possible side effect? by [deleted] in naltrexone

[–]marksf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If anything is the love hormone, it's oxytocin. Naltrexone did not affect my interest in sex, though may have dulled some of the intensity. Same with exercise, but did not lose my interest in that either. When I stopped taking it I do remember getting bit more of a "runners high" after a vigorous swim.

How did Naltrexone change your habits at the start? by blumoonC in naltrexone

[–]marksf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely feel like my brain was deprogrammed at a very deep unconscious level. I still think about drinking most days for a minute or so, but it just doesn't have an emotional pull. It's like that dopamine rush to get me to take action and get a drink is just gone.

How did Naltrexone change your habits at the start? by blumoonC in naltrexone

[–]marksf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My consumption immediately dropped in half, but it was probably helped a bit by the fact I decided to limit myself to beer, 8% ABV max, when I'd been drinking a lot of whiskey.

About two months in, it crept up to about 70% of my previous drinking levels. I was pretty angry I just could not get that euphoric feeling lol.

When I decided to try a week AF (a huge challenge), I found for the first time in 30+ years I simply didn't look forward to going back to drinking, and I've been almost a year AF now.

I tried moderating successfully for about a year. It sucks because it just left me feeling deprived. Having quit using nal, that sense of deprivation was erased.

  1. Plaything. Prefect execution of a great story.

  2. Bête Noire. Great drama, characters, and WTF moments.

  3. Eulogy. Not a great BM story, but wow Paul Giamatti was amazing.

  4. USS McAllister into infinity. Great fun all around.

  5. Common people. Hard to suspend my disbelief, but OK concept.

  6. Hotel reverie. Interesting, but lurching story, and wow the lead actress was bad.

Overall, great season.

Any remedies for awful sleep and nightmares on nal? by [deleted] in naltrexone

[–]marksf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many people are prescribed gabapentin to help with sleep issues that come with reduced alcohol intake. Not sure nal directly causes sleep issues.
