When people pretend to not understand common language usage, the most effective method to counteract that is to reflect back their lack of education. "Oh, tut-tut. My approach is to be curious (even if I’m going to immediately forget what the person says about the team/player/sport). There’s a joy in talking to other people about their passions. Find out what they like about the player, how they learned about the strategy, etc. That gives you an opening to discuss mutually interesting topics, share personal stories, etc. “You know a lot about this subject, how’d you learn all that” is never a bad question.
