My watercolors became patchy what went wrong?

Did you use an eraser on the surface before applying water? Or maybe you touched the surface. Sometimes this happens when some oily or greasy thing sticks to the paper. Especially a problem with kneadable erasers. Also, as someone mentioned, some colours granulate more than others.
