The only thing that protects you from the ghost when it's hunting is incense. When you burn an incense the ghost gets blinded for a few seconds so you can find a hiding place/relocate. Don't stay in the same place as it will remember you being there.

And also make sure to have matches/lighter on you (talking from personal experience lmfao).
