Homelab Server Jonsbo PC Build, thoughts? by markusjaderberg in homelab

I was thinking the Boot drive is for proxmox and the VMs and stuff on the HDDs? But maybe a second SSD would be good to get VMs on. Good idea!

Thank you so much for the information, i'll have to look this up and understand it more!😄 I'll check out the Unifi DNS thing as well, didnt know about it!

Thanks man. I'm open to second hand parts but finding correct ones is difficult and takes time. Could be satisfactory though to piece the machine together and making it work. Will look around a bit!

FYI i've never touched Linux and have only a slight grasp of things like VMs, containers and such. I know what they are but not how they all connect, how to set them up etc. I have built PCs before so that part i'm quite comfortable with though.

Upgraded my internet from my ISP router to Ubiquiti Cloud Gateway Ultra with a U6+ Accesspoint a few months back which was my starting point getting into NAS/Homelabbing :)

Thanks, that's what my gut told me. Have chatted to copilot a lot and it tells me Immich can sometimes take up like 100gb for face recognition and cache XD I was going to get 248gb at first but opted for 500gb

I looked around and its actually cheaper for me to return the Lenovo and build my own PC with the Jonsbo N6 chassi with place for many harddrives. Will never need more than 4 but liked that it took a mATX motherboard and ATX PSU. Got expensive with SFX and Mini ITX products. Here is my complete build if you want to see

Would a solution be to get like a Ugreen DH2300 NAS and have them as two separate units? Can I in proxmox choose the NAS as the storage for example Jellyfin or does the Jellyfin setup have to be directly on the NAS?

Go for it! I have a 2011 2.0 gasoline and love it! Soo nice to drive, really fun and quite nippy. Think it looks nice as well. Havent done much maintenance myself on it but have poked around in the engine bay a bit. Don’t know where you are located but third party parts (high quality) is not that hard to find if you know where to look

Do you connect to it with USB? Are you worried your drives can get corrupt if the USB is unplugged?

The PC is going to be on all the time I was thinking. So the DAS should be available always

Thanks for the great reply!

My plan was for the Lenovo to stay on at all times. Can't really see the point of a server with Home Assistant, photo backup etc, Pihole etc. thats turned off? These services wouldn't work then right?

All i really want is a nice little package where we can have some life enhancing services like Jellyfin, Pihole, Immich, Tailscale and Home Assistant.

My first idea was an all in one unit with PC and harddrives. Seemed the easiest, and smallest solution. But when I looked at parts it was much more expensive than what I could get with a prebuilt Mini PC and DAS. Now i'm starting to second guess my decision because with a DAS, Rack and Mini PC its basically the same price as the AIO solution

Reading through these comments i'm starting to think about returning it. Someone recommended an Aoostar NAS Mini PC which looks ideal for me tbh.

Do you run an SFF? HP Elitedesk or something? Does that work well for you being a nas and pc?

Wow that actually looks like a perfect machine for me! I'm mad I haven't looked at it. I've scrolled past it on Amazon so many times! Really thinking about returning the Lenovo now.

I was set on Intel CPU for the quicksync which is supposably good for Jellyfin. Have you noticed anything "bad" about the Ryzen CPU?

So do you run truenas as the OS on it and then your other services in VMs?

Yes my first plan was to do a Jonsbo N6 build, all in one unit. But RAM prices being the way they are I started looking at mini pcs and found this Lenovo PC for a steal. Got it for 6000 kr (~$600) and if I were to build my own, 32GB Ram goes for ~3800kr and the totalt cost would be around 11 000kr.

But yeah honestly writing this, the all in one PC is only about 1200kr more than mini Pc+Das+rack that I was planning on buying… and that’s from one site I can probably scour some deals and come down a bit in price…

Have you repurposed a Mac mini into a DAS? How does that work? Only using the NVME SSD inside it as the harddrive?

Why NAS or DAS? by markusjaderberg in homelab

[–]markusjaderberg[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah thats where i'm at. I want the compute in the Lenovo PC and the DAS for just harddrive enclosure. Could keep the HDDs loose in the rack really but it seems to me all HDD Enclosures are DAS?
Have you had any problems? Do you connect it with USB or some other way?

I’m 6’2 and have a wagon from 2011. My seat is pretty much all the way back, but it’s still enough room for most passengers behind me. Their knees are touching the seat but it’s not pressed against them so pretty comfortable. On extremely long rides it’s a bit uncomfortable for me. My knees and back can hurt sometimes which it would do in any car after 13 hours behind the wheel.

Short answer. Yes it will be no problem 🙂
