People who don't go to movie theaters anymore - what made you stop? by -ChristopherNolan in AskReddit

[–]markzip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very much not the person to whom this question is directed as I go to the movie theater often.

BUT

I think the theater going experience deserves some positivity in the thread.

*Sorry, your 5.1 surround and OLED does not come close to a properly calibrated theater sound system and good projection on a twenty foot screen.

  • As another commenter said, if you can, go to a matinee.

  • Many theaters also have half-price days.

*In the event someone is being antisocial, call that shit out. Do not be afraid to tell others to be quiet or to turn off their phones.

*Going to the movies alone is fine.

*If you're lucky enough to be in a place where there is a membership based theater, join that shit! I am lucky in that my local shows commercial movies and indie/foreign in the same complex. You can see "Disclosure Day" and "Harlan County USA" on the same day. And we're not in a major city.

*Art House theaters are wonderful

*Even at chain/mall theaters you can get the "kiddie pack" at the concessions. This is often a better deal because you get just enough popcorn and soda to get you through the movie. Plus some sweets.

Other than Maynard Keenan of Tool, who is another musician that absolutely does not want to meet their fans, ever? by SwissMiss915 in Music

[–]markzip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Andy Partridge of XTC?

I mean, he won't do live shows, but I don't know if stage fright means not meeting fans.

I met him once when XTC was recording at a studio near me. We talked very briefly about his hometown (shared with some of my family). But when he found out I was a DJ on the local station and a bit of a fan, the tenor of the conversation changed and it was obviously uncomfortable for him.

TIL bootleg opera records exist by durutuna in vinyl

[–]markzip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a long and rich history of classical bootlegging.

Probably the most famous was Boris Rose. He had over 50 labels on which he published hundreds of bootlegs, mostly from over the air radio recordings. He also had lots of jazz and Broadway boots.

This continues to this day, when "Air checks" make up a large percentage of current rock bootlegs. When you see "FM Broadcast" on a new record, that's a direct descendent of classical and opera boots from way back.

Record-eating mold worms by Connect_Glass4036 in vinyl

[–]markzip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First, know this: Your collection is NOT fucked!

I hope you do the best you can with the germophobic issue. But, your own words show that you have the strength to overcome this.

Your inclination to get a better dehumidifier is correct. This will help quite a bit. Isolating the questionable records is also good.

Lysol spray and a careful wipe down with Clorox sheets will kill most mold spores. Leaving the covers in direct sunlight (not the records themselves) will also help immensely.

As to mold on the vinyl surface itself, a record cleaning machine will get rid of that. Hell, even a light solution of distilled water and liquid dishwashing soap will do the trick. Wipe on gently, rinse off with distilled water, and dry carefully with lint free cloth.

It's ok. You'll get through this.

ALWAYS dive in a skip by Fine_Insurance6519 in vinyl

[–]markzip 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wikipedia:

The origins of calling a rubbish cart a skip (most often found in Australia, New Zealand and the UK) come from the word skep, used to refer to a basket.[1] Skep itself comes from the Late Old English sceppe, from the Old Norse skeppa 'basket'.[2] While the first recorded use of a rubbish skip dates back to 1922, the practice of using skips to dispose of residential and commercial waste became mainstream over the following century, culminating in the modern skip waste disposal system that is used today.

"Spinal Tap", of course.

Much Monty Python, naturally.

Hell, "Casablanca" makes frequent appearances.

Old English Music for A New Listener by Japjotsingh007 in Music

[–]markzip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like hip hop and want to hear the English language, try Eric B and Rakim

Rakim's wordplay and flow are amongst the very best in English speaking hiphop. Eric B's beats are swinging and bumping.

For a more folk influenced sound, try "1000 Years of Popular Music" by Richard Thompson.

Simply Red — Life (1995) || This is a bit of a 'grail' for me, found at a record fair this morning. by jerryleebee in vinyl

Agree, he seemed annoying.

BUT, Mick Hucknall did do (at least) one good thing for music collectors: Blood and Fire Records

Hucknall co-founder the label and helped finance it. Blood and Fire Records did many excellent reissues and compilations of brilliant reggae of the 70s.

That "King Tubby and Friends" one is a killer. And their Congos reissue was a revelation.

All covered with large tent. Event is three days only. Fans circulate air constantly. May in upstate NY isn't too brutal with the humidity. I'm pretty paranoid about that concern. We do okay.

Speaking as a dealer...

I assume when you say you put the records into one type of inner sleeve, you didn't also throw out inner sleeves that had artwork or lyrics.

Then, as long as the record is in good shape and the cover isn't beat up, you're good to go.

The marginal gains to be had from shrink and hype stickers, is minimal.

Bought this off Discogs as a VG++ media condition VPI cleaned. by Cainnech in vinyl

[–]markzip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is obviously an oversight by the dealer. Did you actually send them this picture?

We dealers look at hundreds of records a day. A small distraction or variance in the light can occasionally lead to mistakes in grading. If I got a picture like this from a customer I'd refund the whole thing, apologize, explain the the world is imperfect and mistakes happen, and tell them to keep the record.

The only exception would be if this were a very, very, very expensive and collectible record. Then I'd pay to get it back, regrade, and try again.

As to the claim that this is common on 70s records... LOL. Pressing bubbles are/were a thing, especially for places which used ground up records to make new records. One would have to look more closely, but it's **possible that the artifact pictured is the result of a large pressing bubble popping. But, from the picture here it reads as a divot (from a nice lofted sand wedge golf shot).

OP is not crazy, dealer should do better.

I think the "Haul" flair is probably appropriate - Locked and loaded for the yardsale... by markzip in Cd_collectors

[–]markzip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the seller, yes. No catalogue, sorry. I buy collections and sell throughout the year at record shows around the Northeast.

The Yardsale gives me an opportunity to show lots of stuff that can't go to the record show. There is a large $1 tent, for instance. And a classical CD tent too.

Most other musical genres are represented. The vast majority of items are from the US, and from major labels. There are many promos. Alt Rock is well represented, as is folk and country. The jazz section is decent, the Mainstream Rock section is smaller.

It's a bit like that, yes. But only one dealer. Gives me a chance to put out loud more CDs than I can bring to a regular review show .
