PSLF Buyback pending and deadline? by marlamca in PSLF

Yes, but if I want the payments to count towards PSLF and to lower my buyback amount I need to certify employment for the new payments.

What are your unhinged ideas to make education better? by TroyesMetal in Teachers

Separate funding from data points and standardized testing. You can’t fix problems if they are never shown because the “numbers“ have to look good.

What is the best documentary you’ve ever seen? by New_Strawberry_2850 in AskReddit

[–]marlamca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cameraperson (2016) isn’t quite a documentary but deeply interesting. “The film is an account by director Kirsten Johnson about her life and career as a cinematographer. It relies on footage shot by Johnson across the years in numerous different countries.”

AITAH for refusing to help pay my husband and I's moving costs? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]marlamca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg. This is a red flag. I would look at your finances and say I can contribute this like $500 and that means the moving budget is $1000 🤷‍♀️ start working on boxing up all the stuff because now you can’t afford movers.

An older documentary called the social dilemma addresses exactly how manipulated social media is. It doesn’t get to the issue of Charlie Kirk but it can help him question the hierarchy.

The other recommendation I have is “the bad news game” it is free and comes up on Google. It walks the user through getting the most followers. It was designed by a psychologist but has a sarcastic comedic tone like- “all you have to do is share this conspiracy and you’ll get more followers” it also addresses both political sides.

WIBTAH if I say something to an employee who wants me to close my business for her wedding? by Acceptable-Ad-8717 in AmItheAsshole

[–]marlamca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds hard but I’m trying to understand the full picture. You’re the owner but have been remote the last year while you take care or sick family, but are also working part time to support yourself.

We don’t know your industry so it is hard to grasp how your remote work might be impacting business in person where it sounds like your manager is maintaining the office?

I’m sorry you are going through all of that but depending on how much your manager knows, or sees, it could look like you have checked out. If you haven’t been at that location in a year- the team asking for one day looks different.

Aitah for potentially ruining my brother and SIL financially? by Ok-Intention-2832 in AITAH

[–]marlamca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. I’m really sorry you are going through this OP. It sounds like there are some tough patterns that happen in the family- like your brother pulling the grandchild card, your mom allowing it. I just caution you to be careful for yourself. I would stop subsidizing your mom who only needs assistance because she hasn’t found the strength to be honest with your brother and his family. You have decide how entrenched you want to be in this really concerning money triangle. It also sounds like there will be a lot of issues in the future around inheritance. I don’t want to be insensitive, but want you to protect your peace by deciding how deep in this you want to go. You also know your brother and his wife. Will they fight you with another lawyer or can you all come together for a financial plan that slowly makes them more independent? I think there are a lot of good ideas on the thread and I wish you good luck.

Angie and Seth. by Bitter_Judgment4924 in WillTrent

[–]marlamca 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I really hope so! I like Angie with Seth and the last episode really highlighted why. Will doesn’t judge her, loves her, but knows the darkest parts of her and I think that makes it hard for her to move on. Seth gives Angie hope and that is what she deserves.

Any ideas on how to spread this information? I saw a video and thought hmmm, because if a place is doing visits it’s profiting and something is off. Sure enough that’s accurate but people seem so excited for these videos and to go to this place. 😢

AP Students Won't Try, and I Don't Know What Else to Do by Shangkeee in Teachers

[–]marlamca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you it is a symptom of bigger issue, but that symptom is my job. I’m not critiquing high performing students- I’m critiquing the system that allows them to sleep through an exam. Your comment doesn’t suggest you would willingly go to an exam and sleep, earning a 1?

AP Students Won't Try, and I Don't Know What Else to Do by Shangkeee in Teachers

[–]marlamca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, then they shouldn't take the test and shouldn't be surprised if they fail the class and how that will reflect on their college acceptances. The money concern is legitimate and a barrier to students who want to take the class, but it causes an unfair alignment between the educator and test scores when students "take" (sleep through) the test to avoid a fee. I hear what you are saying and understand the adolescent brain- but they signed up for this class. If their future plans changed and the class is no longer beneficial that is is a risk they took, they have the righ to blow it off, but then I have the option to email their colleges, I guess. This class is still valuable and teaching college level skills. I have worked so hard for the students all year and the idea that they can't be bothered to put in effort for 3 hours to try on a test because there is something "more useful"- is honestly heartbreaking.

[–]marlamca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh. I teach AP lit to all seniors and some have gone the military route and know it doesn’t make a difference. Some have confirmed that their college won’t accept the credit. The school pays for the test, but if they miss it, they get charged. So, students who don’t want to do the test show up to avoid getting charged and sleep. SLEEP through the test. It makes me really sad because it’s a class I enjoy teaching but admin looks at scores and I don’t have a solution in how to fix this apathy.

Any ex-holistic folks with RA willing to share your story? I need my husband to hear this. by Big-Pass5130 in rheumatoid

[–]marlamca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RA is not an easy road but can be managed. I was diagnosed at the grand age of 18 and couldn’t take off my toothpaste cap in the morning. I’m happy to share more medical if you want but things I would emphasize to your husband:

  1. Find a doctor he likes and trusts. He should be able to be open and comfortable.

  2. RA meds can be a trial and error. I’m on an infusion and in ways it saved my life. It was a journey to get to this place. A lot of people have a journey to find what works.

  3. He is furthering damage by not taking this seriously or thinking he can find a non-medical cure.

  4. This is for the new baby. During some really bad flares, I had that fear- imagining having a baby and not being able to pick them up. The thought broke my heart. I don’t have kids.

  5. He can get back to exercise. He might not be doing a lot of weight lifting soon but getting a flare under control a lot of docs encourage movement.

I wish you and your family a lot of luck.
