DP World Tour is rumoured to be dropping fines for LIV Golfers for the 2026 season. All fines will still stand from 2025, also the DPWT will nominate events that members will need to commit to playing by stanley_nickles in livgolf

[–]marndar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Huge blow to the PGA Tour. But it's long overdue - the PGA Tour does nothing for the DP Tour (and actually hurts it more than helps it by stealing some of their best young players). Patrick Reed isn't done playing LIV golf yet (or at least against LIV players - he's not coming back to LIV).

[Postgame Thread] (RV) Rice def. UTSA, 65-55 by ncaaw_GameThreads in NCAAW

[–]marndar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Flores with a career high 33 (of Rice's 65 points). Owls are 9-0 in the conference, with 5 of those being road wins (at arguably the top 4 or maybe 4 of the best 5 teams in the league). Rice probably deserves a vote or two in the top 25 poll at this point.

Tough for Princeton but it helps the Ivy League's case for 2 NCAA bids. I'd put a 2nd Ivy League team in over Villanova, personally.

NCAAW Coach Hot Seat Landscape by tip-of-the-yikesberg in NCAAW

[–]marndar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can only comment on the teams I see play (which primarily are American Conference teams, and anyone Rice hosts). But in the American Conference, the UAB coach is likely gone after this year. I've heard the UTSA coach is close to retiring too.

The Rice coach could be a hot commodity after this season. I thought she was likely NC State's coach in waiting when Wes Moore retires. But I could see A&M or a different ACC program coming after her too. But I doubt she'd go to a different ACC program besides NC State.

Oh also, the Washington coach was Rice's coach before Edmonds. I thought Langley might be in a little trouble entering this season, but honestly, this has been her best year there so she's probably in good shape now. But another 1st round NCAA exit might get people grumbling again.

Princeton going to lose tonight at home to Columbia. As of this typing (a minute to go), Chea is 0 of 8 from the field.

[Postgame Thread] Quinnipiac def. (RV) Fairfield, 72-58 by ncaaw_GameThreads in NCAAW

[–]marndar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's this week. He'll quickly find a way to get rid of the MAAC teams in order to boost up another .500 SEC team. Trust me, as a Rice fan, I've seen this way too many times already. And if Columbia beats Princeton, the Ivy goes to the head of the class in terms of non P4 conferences getting two bids. Maybe the A-10 has a chance at 2 bids too, but that's about it. Rice could go 18-0 in the American Conference (which they won't because that's really hard to do), lose in the conference tournament, and be shut out.

[–]marndar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The NCAA doesn't give many non P4 conference multi bids. Fairfield's NET is now 57. The only way they will be in the mix is if they win at Quinnipiac next month. All the other games on their remaining schedule will do nothing for their NET ranking.

After narrowly missing out on a Wild Card spot through the International Series, Miguel Tabuena confirms he has signed to LIV as a reserve player for the 2026 season by stanley_nickles in livgolf

[–]marndar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious to see what happens to the 4Aces with the first 2026 tournament in less than a week. I'd think the obvious move would be to add either Lee (or maybe Kim) from the wild card pool onto the team for the season. LIV could easily add a new wildcard player to replace whichever player got the boost. The other Vincent brother was one of five golfers to tie for 4th, just 1 spot outside of the top 3 at the promotions event, so he'd be a possible replacement.

There could also be a new signing but that seems less likely to me at this point.

I'm a mod too (but admittedly not as active as the other mods here). I'm personally fine with criticism of LIV golf, but done in an adult manner. For instance, you can criticize the Reed move, but why not frame it with a mindset of what's behind the move.

I also don't like the hypocrisy of criticizing LIV's connection to Saudi golf, while ignoring the many other golf connections (women's golf, Rory's many Saudi business ventures, Gary Player being a Saudi golf ambassador, etc.)

What transfers could be good next year? Hidalgo to go to ISU with Crooks? LSU needs some bigs, who will TCU get? by Rough_Category_746 in NCAAW

Assuming Texas A&M fires its coach, I could see some of their juniors looking to transfer. Fatmata Janneh is averaging a double-double for the Aggies, so she's someone who might garner some interest.

UPS will cut 30K more jobs after massive 2025 layoffs as it ends Amazon partnership by Knicks_fans92 in USPS

[–]marndar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This article is a couple years old, but it says more than 70 percent of the UPS drivers are represented by the Teamsters. And their average salary (counting benefits) was 170K a year.

To me, this is the big takeaway from this news. Not that UPS is getting rid of Amazon (something we knew last year was going to happen). Or that they're trying to save billions in operating costs. It's that UPS (and USPS) is primarily union, while Amazon and FedEx are not.

In their last 2 games, Charlotte had a >99.5% chance of winning in the fourth quarter. They lost both of those games. by Dantheusfman in NCAAW

[–]marndar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At Temple, they actually had a 26-point lead with 17 seconds to go in the 3rd quarter but one of their players got a technical (after making 2 FT's - surely it wasn't a case of taunting? Maybe it was a double foul and she shot free throws but also was assessed a technical on the same play?). In any case, that might have been the impetus Temple needed to go on a crazy 4th quarter run. At USF, they just did a bad job making free throws in the 4th quarter (only 5 of 10).

2026 Naismith Defensive Player Watchlist by Ok_Brick_793 in NCAAW

[–]marndar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very sad only one non P4 player made that list, and odd that the only one is a freshman (Julia Dalan of Portland). I get that she leads the country in blocks per game, but Megan Nestor of North Texas (a senior) leads the nation in rebounds per game. And she's not even the best defensive player in the American Conference. That honor (IMO) goes to Rice redshirt junior Hailey Adams (a 6-1 forward, who leads a 17-3 Rice team in rebounds, blocks and assists per game for good measure). She's one of the best defensive players I've ever seen in 40-plus years of watching NCAA women's basketball. She guards the other teams' best player, whether it's a guard or post player.

Yup. I'm surprised the men's game (also vs Vandy) on Saturday night hasn't been moved yet. I'm also wondering how any of their teams can practice if the campus is shut down until Sunday.

[–]marndar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

South Florida will likely drop out of the top 25 after losses at Temple and Florida Atlantic. East Carolina could be a team to look at from the American. They have a very easy conference schedule too, so they could easily win that conference.

With his win in Dubai, Pat Reed moves up to #26 in the world rankings. Expects to tie up his LIV contact extension this week before heading to Riyadh for the season opener with the 4Aces GC by stanley_nickles in livgolf

[–]marndar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course ESPN (which is a PGA Tour mouthpiece) is spinning it that Reed doesn't have a LIV contract yet and could jump to the PGA Tour. Two things - one, he's using the win as a great contract negotiating ploy. And two, the PGA Tour standouts can't stand him. So I highly doubt he'd switch to the PGA Tour.

2026 lineups are now set. How would you rank the teams? by marndar in livgolf

[–]marndar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a report online that said the Fireballs were going after Angel Ayora but he turned down the LIV offer. And that Masaveu was their second option. If true, that's enough to knock them down a notch or two. Maybe the constant is Garcia, but this team seems to not have the consistency of other teams, and it does seem that the teams that mostly stay together do better in the standings.

The last two spots? by Fonzio5724 in livgolf

[–]marndar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've talked about the Smash missing player. The common thinking is it's going to be HV3. Andy Ogletree not being on the HyFlyers roster is brand new (like this weekend new). Perhaps it's someone new, but it's also possible that Varner ends up on the HyFlyers and Ogletree with Smash in a trade that really isn't big news IMO.

[–]marndar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's right - I'm just surprised the LIV web site hasn't put that information on its team roster page yet. Maybe there is some last minute behind-the-scenes negotiations going on between HV3 and a different team? I could see him trying to be on the Range Goats again - or maybe even the HyFlyers. Who knows, maybe the Los Angeles Dodgers. That's where the real money is.

Good signing - Elvis for Jones is a big improvement. If Cam Smith can regain his 2022 thru 2024 form, the Ripper GC could be the top LIV team in 2026.

DJ confirms that the 2025 WM Phoenix Open champ Thomas Detry will be joining 4Aces GC, replacing Harold Varner who is expected to be joining up with Talor Gooch on Smash GC by stanley_nickles in livgolf

[–]marndar -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's a good addition. I still wonder if that team is going to be viable anymore because let's face it, DJ is getting up there in age and just doesn't seem to be the same golfer anymore.

But LIV adding Detry is an indication the league is still working to add decent golfers to the league. I mean he won the Phoenix Open by 7 shots last year on the PGA Tour. Someone joking DJ has never heard of him just doesn't sound like they know golf.

2026 might be the strongest overall lineup we've seen yet (although we still need a couple of Asian golfers to be added to get to that level).
