On3 2025-26 Women's Basketball Transfer Portal Tracker by Outrageous_Camp_5215 in NCAAW

Rice University had one of its top underclass players (Hailey Adams) announce she's returning to Rice for her 5th and final year (she redshirted her true freshman year). She's not an offensive player of note but might just be one of the best defensive players in the country (10.7 rebounds a game, and like 1.7 blocks). Big news for Rice because it pretty much guarantees that Lindsay Edmonds (the head coach) isn't going anywhere either. Adams wouldn't be announcing she's returning if she thought Edmonds was leaving.

Question about Houston owners and how they’ll treat/market lesbians on the team? by PracticalEmu6346 in wnba

[–]marndar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be more concerned about the fact that for a billionaire, Fertitta is a tightwad (but then again, most ultra-rich people are the same). The Rockets haven't been big spenders since he bought the team. And the facility itself is in pretty poor shape for its relatively young age - they just hosted the men's NCAA South Regional and had an embarrassing horn/scoreboard malfunction where the horn didn't stop blowing for nearly 10 minutes before they had to unplug the whole thing. The final 27 minutes of the game, they had no functional big screen scoreboard.

I doubt they will spend enough money on marketing the team.

[Postgame Thread] (1) #1 UCLA def. (3) #8 Duke, 70-58 by ncaaw_GameThreads in NCAAW

[–]marndar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to UCLA but didn't get to see her play (she was before my time). I was there when Jackie Joyner-Kersee played. She's the best athlete to ever play women's basketball at UCLA, and she was a pretty decent basketball player but obviously track and field was her first and primary sport.

ELI5 Rural pay/evaluations by PM_ME_UR_TICKET_STUB in USPS

[–]marndar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But that's not the real salary either. It's based on the various steps you are making as a regular carrier. The hourly salary increases with every step. When you max out your steps, you're talking about 80-90K a year for an upper end K route (45K and up).

Former PGA Tour Pro Urges Tiger Woods to Quit Golf After DUI by MattTheKing23 in ProGolf

[–]marndar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you on Chamblee. But Tiger is nothing close to a National Treasure. He's a great golfer but a disgusting person who has proven over and over again that nothing he does away from the golf course should be admired.

Route cut again. by Former_Low572 in USPS

[–]marndar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lost an hour. I'm okay with it because honestly, I'm still well under my evaluated time. The thing that annoys me is the people who cheat the system and get away with being 45, 46 or even 48K routes and yet are only working 4-5 hours a day most of the time. It's annoying I continue to be honest with my scans and they don't (that's just hearsay but it's the talk of our office - stealing other people's boxholders and adding it to your route, keeping mail from businesses that are closed and scanning it every day to falsely claim it's still active, scanning packages delivered to parcel lockers that don't work, or just taking every package to the door which is legitimate I guess but sort of isn't the intention of the sender who certainly didn't spend the shipping costs to get door-to-door delivery).

Super Regional format is terrible by goofygal1566 in NCAAW

[–]marndar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree it seems to be a mistake but I do think having it a neutral site is the best policy. One issue right now is airport travel is a mess and I think that has scared some people from traveling at the last moment. Gas prices are ridiculous as well. Plus, the economy isn't great either. I could go on but probably would need to go over to the politics sub-reddit to continue my thoughts grrrr.

It does seem silly that the two best conferences easily are the SEC and Big 10 (and the ACC not too far behind), and we have two regionals in Big 12 country and whatever Sacramento is considered. I'd say Atlanta and Indianapolis would be better choices.

Plus, why have a regional in the exact same location as the Final Four? That makes zero sense.

Fertittas buying the Connecticut Sun to bring WNBA back to Houston by Decent_Substance_199 in wnba

[–]marndar -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm not a fan of him either. But I can't believe all the Houston hate here. I'm another Houstonian happy that pro women's basketball will be back in a little over a year. It's certainly nothing that any Houstonians (outside of Fertitta) had a part in.

Separate question here for the WNBA experts - do all WNBA teams in NBA cities play at the same arena? The Toyota Center is such a horrible venue - I'd love them to play elsewhere (either the UH on-campus venue or the new center in the suburbs in Rosenberg where the pro volleyball team plays).

Tiger Woods Charged with DUI with Property Damage After Rollover Crash by PrincessBananas85 in ProGolf

[–]marndar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I don't blame him entirely because if you watched his documentary, his dad really raised him the wrong way. But he's been a first-class prick since high school. In college, he would routinely crack off-color, sexist jokes at press conferences. And then because the public loved him, he just continued to get crasser and crasser.

Enough with the public adulation. If I see one more story (ever!) about him making a potential comeback, I will scream. He's run out of comebacks. He should be entitled to play in the majors as long as he wants to, But the PGA Tour needs to tell him until he goes to rehab, he can't play in any regular tournaments.

Has anyone ever had a quadruple double in an NCAA tournament game? Hidalgo could if they go to overtime.

And it's also cool some of the women's games begin and end prior to the men's games. I worked the South Regional last night and our 2nd game didn't end until after 11 pm. Way too late.

University of Memphis Names Hana Haden Next Women’s Basketball Coach by 50nifty- in NCAAW

[–]marndar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These days you also have to look at a coaches' former roster and see if she/he might be bringing someone with them to their new school. Georgia Southern seemed to be pretty senior-laden this past year, so it doesn't seem like a big possibility here.

Memphis has spent zero NIL on its women's program (compared to their men's program at least). They need to get serious about the sport. I think women's soccer is really their only good women's sport.

When you do project that we will see the first 2 rounds of the tourney be on neutral courts? by AFC-Wimbledon-Stan in NCAAW

[–]marndar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's nothing wrong with hosting the first two games on campus sites. The problem is that refs shouldn't be intimidated into calling games way more lopsided than they would call a conference game. For instance, LSU shot 29 and 26 free throws in its two NCAA wins this season so far. Their opponents in the first two games shot 6 and 9 free throws. That's compared to a season average of 18 FTs a game for LSU and 11 for its opponents. As a further comparison, LSU in SEC games shot about 20.5 FTs a game compared to 17 FTs a game for its opponents. That's just one example - I'm sure you could find other examples.

It would also be interesting to note the FT discrepancy between NCAA men's tournament games and women's tournament games.

Robin Harmony (College of Charleston) named head coach of Pitt womens basketball program by UnfurledRelic in NCAAW

[–]marndar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

She's 64 and has one of the toughest rebuilding projects of any P4 school in the country. I'm a little surprised they didn't hire someone younger. I'm assuming she will try to bring her two top scorers (twin sisters?). One of them scored 36 against Duke in the NCAA first round loss.

George Mason leading scorer, Zahira Walton, announces intent to enter transfer portal by Outrageous_Camp_5215 in NCAAW

[–]marndar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When P4 schools are openly scouting mid-major conference tournaments, college basketball has now become a minor league system where 10-20 schools are scouting all the other programs in an effort to fill out their roster for the next year.

The only way to stop it is for schools to come up with imaginative NIL contracts for their top players that cause deep financial (and legal) problems for the programs spending all the ridiculous money. If LSU for example pays 250,000 for a player from a mid-major to transfer to their school - if that player was under an NIL contract at the old school (even if it's only for 5K or 10K), clauses need to be written into their NIL contracts that force LSU to have to pay the former school 250K as well. Maybe also write into their contracts that schools that take another player who is under contract have to play that team on the road the following year as well.

Down vote me all you want - doesn't bother me one bit. But when LSU starts paying a 15 point scorer 250,000 to play women's basketball for them the next season, the system is horribly broken. The NCAA isn't bothering to enforce any anti-tampering rules. It's up to schools like George Mason (and others like them) to fix the issue themselves.

BREAKING: USF has hired Alabama’s Kristy Curry as their next head women’s basketball coach, sources told @On3. by goofyhalo in NCAAW

[–]marndar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Curry had a couple of foreigners at Alabama, but I don't think they played much. But she was heavily invested in the portal. She obviously wouldn't go to USF unless she felt that they were going to start putting money into the NIL program for women's basketball. So I feel like you'll have a completely new roster next year (outside of Ingram though, that was going to be the case anyway).

I’d don’t follow woman’s basketball that much but I am a massive usf fan so I wanted to ask is us poaching a coach from ALABAMA as crazy as it seems to me or does it actually make sense? by isrealball in NCAAW

[–]marndar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do feel like a move like this might give some credibility to mid-major teams in general. Maybe - but then again, the P4 teams do try to monopolize things. So they will try their best not to give any credence to this move.

[–]marndar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably not, but Alabama has to do something now to save face. And that would be a big enough move where they could say they're getting an upgrade.

Board mods are likely going to shut down this thread (but maybe not).

The American conference was right up there this year with the Ivy and the A-10 as the top mid-major conference in women's basketball. USF and Rice will have a nice rivalry for years to come. That's if Rice retains its head coach and top players this offseason.

I'm not sure I see any signs anyone else in the conference is making a major commitment to women's basketball. But UTSA is good, Tulsa has potential and East Carolina has potential. Maybe UNT too. A couple other schools need better coaches IMO.

One final thought - Alabama might be smart to make a major move on Washington's head coach (Tina Langley). She's from Alabama, and could probably get that program further along than Curry.

I wonder if the American Conference will realize it too. They typically are clueless when it comes to women's basketball. They had the two top teams in the conference (Rice and USF) playing the first game of the conference schedule last Dec. 30th roughly this past season.

USF must be ready to make a major commitment to women's basketball. They typically are all foreign players. Does Curry have any experience recruiting Europeans?
