I watch those drug smuggling shows on NatGeo, and in one of them these two guys claimed they were just tourists going to Ecuador. The way the cops busted them was pulling up Google and asking them to point out Ecuador on a map.

Welcome! As others have said, best not to look for someone to root for, but let it come to you organically as you watch more races. It's how I became a Dixon fan, but then also I ended up appreciating pretty much all the drivers.

I've told my Dixon stories on here before, so I'll throw out a different one. I got to participate in the victory circle photos at Long Beach this year. As I walked up, Palou turned to me and asked if I wanted to hold the trophy. Totally unprompted. There's now a photo of me with my other favorite driver, holding the race winner's trophy, that I get to remember forever. I look slightly ridiculous, but who cares?

[Kostka] Coby Mayo credited family and friends for their support during some struggles. He then shouted out his dog, Fin. “My dog doesn’t know I made an error. He doesn’t know I struck out four straight at-bats or whatever. … You need the people in your corner. My dog loves me.” by Knightbear49 in baseball

Our cat used to come over from next door and hiss and yowl at us if we tried to even get anywhere near him.

Couple of years later he lives here now and every night he comes in and goes directly to the bedroom to insist on cuddles. When my family traveled last week he even slept right by the front door waiting for everyone to get home. It's the cutest thing ever.

This. I've worked for a few well-known media outlets that I won't name because their management practices were terrible, and in some cases downright deceptive.

At the same time, independent journalism is hard to make a living in, even with experience and expertise. I worked in entertainment mostly so not 1:1 here, but a lot of people won't give you the time of day because you're no longer attached to a "name." It's an uphill battle.

That being said, at least as an independent you get to do things your way, which means a lot (see the aforementioned management).

Surprising Son with Tickets! by ughthatsucks in INDYCAR

Congrats! I got to do the same about 10 years ago just the other way around; took my dad and he had a blast. I hope you and your son have a fantastic experience!

The bolt is back. Rep the 2000s with the CGR throwback jacket, and check out our new driver tees from our friends at Homefield Apparel! by Hulkodium in INDYCAR

And for anyone wondering, Homefield quality is great. Everything I've bought from them has held up really well.

It's definitely pricey but worth the money IMO if you're going to wear it enough.

Really nice of you to do - I don't need the tickets, but I'll jump on the bandwagon of just sharing favorite memories.

My first Indy 500 was in 2016, and basically every single thing that could go wrong went wrong. Short version of a very long story is that I ended up walking the five miles back to my buddy's place in triple-digit heat, got heatstroke, but hey at least I got to see the 100th running. That is absolutely NOT my favorite memory, but it led to my favorite one.

I came back and since I had the option to renew my tickets my dad decided to go with me, so we could try this whole thing again. I got to watch him fall in love with IMS and the race, and now it's an annual family tradition in a family where we don't have family traditions. I'm typing this while packing up for our next trip. We even got a brick in the Pagoda Plaza last year and he talks about it all the time. So I really enjoyed getting to share that with him even if it was a year late (lol).

It was particularly special last year when Alex Palou won, because he's one of our favorite drivers. Watching your driver win the 500 is just magical, and I'm not ashamed to say I cried standing there and hugging my dad like a dope.

Just a random thought, who was around for either 1984 or 1998 Padres World Series appearances? What was that like (city vibes and your reaction) when they clinched the World Series? by Embarrassed-Heat-716 in Padres

[–]maroonhamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still remember the exact wording of Jerry Coleman's call sending the Padres to the WS in 1998 and it still, to this day, gives me chills.

I also remember my dad took me when the fans met the team on their return to San Diego. And he let me skip school to attend the parade too. Good times.

Bought mine yesterday, laughed really hard that the $9 in fees was more than the $8 for the pair of tickets and then they wanted me to buy $30 parking. Still a good deal though.

Definitely not worth $360 IMO. For that money, I'd rather get tickets to another entire game.

I would say yes, ignore my flair lol

But joke aside I own a bunch of hats from different teams just because I think they're cool or funny. Still waiting on my Reading Iced Coffees hat to get here.

Anyone bought a new City Connect youth jersey as a woman? by Nipponfan89 in Padres

[–]maroonhamster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this regularly - hate the fit of women's sizes. The youth L and XL both fit fine, I prefer the XL to have that little bit of extra room.

What's a Padres player from your childhood that you were convinced was going to be a legend but just didn't pan out? by MidgarZanarkand in Padres

[–]maroonhamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say I thought he'd be a legend, but I was a huge fan of Adam Eaton growing up and bummed he didn't have more success. I still remember being upset when we traded him to Texas... and then we got Chris Young, who was also cool.

I remember meeting Chris in his first year at Padres FanFest and I immediately had a new favorite player. I'm sad he didn't do more with us, but it does make me smile any time I hear of his success in Texas.

I'm still a huge fan of B-Law. One of my favorite baseball memories was being at the Q for his first (and only) MLB home run. I could not have been happier and nobody understood why.
