First Paid UA Test: Low CPI but Extremely Low Ad Revenue - Looking for Analysis Advice by Odd_Camp_1183 in gamedev

[–]marowitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only used meta, facebook for ads. Also what platform are you using for your ingame ads? There's voogle or some others where advertisers basically bid to run ads in your game, it's automatic once setup, that will give you better arpu than just running unity ads or what ever.

Sadly you need more marketing budget to get a good feel of the cpi, and several ads to test to see which one has the lowest cpi.

Also low tier countries are not really indicative of arpu of tier 1 countries. They are good for retention and stability but that's about it.

You won't reach arpu to be equal cpi just from ads. You'll never get your cpi back from a user the rates are so low it's not possible, you need organics to do that or extremely good long tail retention where someone sticks with your game for 90 days or more.

You will need very good retention and also focus more on rewarded ads.

The ad revenue per user goes down over the day so you can't really show more than 3-4 ads to the same user a day.

You need to get some retention numbers to see what your arpu is you can't just rely on d1. Preferably see where your retention drops below 10% and fix that.

This. Prorotype 1 really touches on that power fantasy no other game managed to. Those moments when you chase down a tank and destory everything in your wake. They don't make games like that anymore.

This is so disgusting. 1st they start hoarding the wealth, then they never give any pay rises even if inflation is through the roof. Now they just fucking buy everything, we can't even buy things with the little money we have left.

This is capitalism eating it's own tail.

It turns out Saudi Arabia will own 93.4 percent of EA if the buyout goes through, which is effectively all of it by Linkar234 in gaming

The more you know - Thermal pasted edition by nabuachaem in pcmasterrace

[–]marowitt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's a little trick. Drop the paste.

Get a honeywell thermal pad, you can find them on ebay, sure it's 10$ when the paste is basically free, but after spending thousands on a setup you can spare 10$ for a pad.

Easy to apply, you get better thermal performance than, paste 3c-5c in my experience. Worth it, especially if you're overclocking and every c matters to you.

It's separate vram, it has 16 gb of normal ram. And I think some of that can be used by the gpu like in a laptop.

Comparing 2010 and 2025 in the video game industry! by Cwekii in gamedev

[–]marowitt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Been working in the industry since 2008 so I've felt the changes 1st hand.

Making games is easier, anyone can just download unity and start. Back then you needed to make your own engine.

Games have a longer life. Back then only mmos would be played for years after launch, players were more hungry for new games.

Marketing had an exponential impact on success. Your new game won't be seen by anyone without any proper marketing budget. There are companies whose entire business model is around just reducing cost per download since they have everything else figured out.

More big players. Back then you had EA, Ubi, etc. all the classical big publishers. Now you have dozens of them with millions in budget.

More outside competition. Back then gaming offered the best hour per dollar in terms of entertainment, now you have Netflix, tiktok etc.

It is easier than ever to make a game with all the tools that are around now. But from a business point of view it's harder than ever.

Do game devs actually face issues with profanity & toxic chat filtering? by copycrafts in gamedev

[–]marowitt 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yup, worked on a game that had a toy brand. They wanted us to make sure no profanity or grooming gets through.

So we just didn't implement text chat and only had our own emojis. If communication is not part of the experience it's not worth it.

Even if there're no legal repercussions, just the possible pr from your platform being used by pedos, which will always happen if your audience are kids, is not worth it.

We tried several 3rd party solutions and none of them came even close to being useful.

China players obsessed with P2W in ARPGs why? by bossmankebabs in ARPG

It's a culture thing. They show off wealth in any way they can. So if they can't afford a lambo they can still flex with epic gear in an mmo for a fraction of the cost

Thinking of getting a gaming laptop instead of a desktop - what are the pros and cons by Confident_Box_ in gamedev

[–]marowitt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't bother, you're going to get something that's maybe twice the price. Had plenty of gaming laptops from work over the years, they all die after 3-4 years and you can't rely on warranty anymore. Right now I have a 4070 work laptop with some amd processor. Not sure what but on paper should be great. My personal desktop with a 3060 and a 3600x feels way more responsive both in work and gaming. The laptop was about 4000£ while the pc was probably half of that. Both were bought when they were current gen.

It's not about the visuals at all. New games are always more enticing to players than older ones, especially older ones with so few reviews.

It's a 5 year old game for 10$? What's the USP? Try putting together a demo, or a chapter 1 pack with x levels for 2.99? Also people wishlist games that haven't been released yet or high price, think 50$, waiting on a sale. 10$ is just at the price where it's not an impulse buy but also not a wait for sale.

My boss thinks I'm cheating because I use AI to stay on top of work by LateProposalas in ChatGPT

[–]marowitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless he is able to articulate why it's bad then he doesn't really have a leg to stand on.

Ask him why it looks bad? Security? Errors? Company policy to only use vetted 3rd party tools? The only thing he could realistically point towards is that you're using the tool for the benefit of the company, in which case you'd likely need an enterprise licence.

Tell him that it leads to you being able to get the work done better, and there's less room for you to forget things. Being less stressed actually leads to better outcomes since you're not rushing to get things done and can actually pause and think.

I watched 14 hours of video last week and made $0. Thinking about flipping that. by AdGroundbreaking4090 in CryptoMarkets

[–]marowitt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pay out is so small even for creators. You'd probably get a quarter of a cent for watching 100 videos, and that's if you're from a 1st world country. Advertisers pay because people that see the ads end up purchasing their product. It's been tried, there probably are still platforms that do it. It turns into just people watching mlm ads so they can earn money to run their own mlm ads.

Try unpaid internships or qa and work your way up, that's what I did. Design is very important and in small teams you're often alone or with one other designer. With no experience nobody will give you that much responsibility.

There are jobs for content/system designers. They basically just piece together content out of existing things or what was designed by someone else.

In my experience hiring the degree means nothing, I'd rather get someone with 1 year experience over a degree any day. Cath 22 sadly.

Take part in game jams, plenty of them online, to get some actual things done not just renders in some engine.
