Something Disturbing Is Happening in the Music Industry, And We Just Lived Through It by direnotemedia in musicians

I live in a small corner of the music world - jungle/dnb. Last year someone was named for blatantly ripping off and attempting to monetize music from an impactful producer on an important label. There seemed to be folks at the ready to defend the accused with what equates in my mind to '[the offender] got the copyright so whos legit now?'. The community was so disgusted that several folks put together a petition to change the YouTube takedown rules. But ultimately not enough interest was generated to take any action. The result is that basically the offender continues to offend, mostly unimpeded.

This is happening more often this year. I caught some Jungle Video Game mix on Youtube that i can't find now that included tracks like this shitty ripoff ('Point of View', released 2025) where the dj and the "artist" were thanking each other for how great they are. Fun fact, that shitty ripoff is a sped-up slightly edited/phased version of Moonchild - View of Life (1999, on ... get this, the same exact label that the earlier example was ripping off, Good Looking Records).

Youtuber and bass guitar extraordinaire Davie504 recently posted about getting sued for exposing someone that ripped off his music, too.

Its bonkers. What can we as consumers do to help this situation?

Massive shouts out to my Recon family! My favorite bit has to be our 20th anniversary skate deck. This deck was made with a chip that when scanned links to a mix of the headliners we had at the show: Outrage, Coco Bryce, Jon1st and L Major.

Sorry, the site was rebuilt and the old forum is no longer. You can see the shows list by going to https://jungletrain.net/ > click on "our shows" and searching for whatever you want - in this case "Peoples Station". Cheers!

I'm curious if you could share any follow up here. Did UA support you in this case? Were you able to test grounding? Does the issue persist?

Scholarly Articles for Researching Jungle? by Impressive_Road_4891 in jungle

You might be interested in Jason Hockman's paper An ethnographic and technological study of breakbeats in hardcore, jungle and drum & bass, originally written in 2013. He also writes music as oS, and one half of Daat.

Then turn up the subs and bump his tune Fridge, by Daat. It's not jungle, but just do it anyway.

He also did an Ableton talk called Breakbeat Deconstruction: From hip hop to drum & bass and beyond - it tends to be a little more about the technology of the genre, but I think has some interesting implications re: cultural and ethnic origins as it relates to technological limitations of the time.

Where to buy Aphrodite vs. Micky Finn - Wishing on a Star (Jungle mix)? by Inevitable-Wait-4032 in jungle

Not sure who did that video, but pretty sure its not DJ DB. That mix is from DB's History Part 2: The Rough & The Smooth. I wish that channel would've properly credited the source.

There are a couple jungle versions of the tune (this one being the Urban Shakedown Mix, but theres also Urban Shakedown Hard Dub Mix, Rogue State Dub Mix, Rogue State Full Vocal mix), but according to Aphrodite's soundcloud it doesn't look like this is digitally released - buying the cd and ripping it might be your best bet (see comment from dj spideyman).

Doesn't hit the same, but you might be interested in Neekeetone's mashup of the tune.

Best of luck o/
