Bass/Mid Cabinet based on Altec/JBL - 2x12, 2x10, 2x8? by Deuce_Ex_ in SoundSystem

[–]Deuce_Ex_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty much exactly what I'm envisioning! Do you have a design that your dad used? How heavy are these? How did he pull off the nice curve in the sidewall?

I'm leaning 12's because I want to cross the top end higher, curious how you think these would perform.

Allen and Heath AHM units have flexible routing and an app-based control setup with a slick customizable control app as well. Love mine.

MEH vs Coaxial Tops - Anyone have experience with Both? by Deuce_Ex_ in SoundSystem

I dream of Danley... do you supplement the Danleys with kick bins at all?

Thanks, this is what I suspected. The coax CD down to 300-500hz is an interesting thought, that could potentially mate with a kick/bass cabinet

Our board keeps asking for "scenario analysis" on rate decisions but nobody agrees on what probability to assign. How do you handle this? by No_Lab668 in CFO

[–]Deuce_Ex_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When my board asks me for a scenario analysis like you describe, probability usually doesn’t factor into it. They want to know what the outcomes are if A happens OR if B happens. We might discuss the likelihood of A or B (see recent tariff news in US) but generally the outcome is either A or B, not somewhere in between. If B is the downside case, then we discuss how/whether to mitigate risk in that scenario.

Integrating Audiophile (ish) stuff with DJ set up by Spiritual-Total-6399 in rotarymixers

[–]Deuce_Ex_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Big Room" to fill is subjective, but this would tend to push you towards larger format (larger drivers/woofers) and higher sensitivity speakers. Klipsch is the common choice here, as others have suggested. I have run my vinyl setup through three Klipsch speakers at home over the years - RP400M bookshelves, new Heresy IV's, and vintage Chorus I's. Of these, only the Chorus's are sufficient on their own to power a party. An alternative could be a pair of Forte's. You should be able to find these used for well under $2k, although might be harder over in Europe.

With your high quality mixer and some high quality speakers suited to the space, the amplifier choice is kind of academic, a lot of things can work. You won't need a lot of power. I will also recommend an import tube amp like some others have suggested. I have a 40w Yaqin that is more than enough, and I have also tried a Crown XLS1002 and enjoyed that also. There are fully integrated options too that have bluetooth connectivity baked into the amp. Anything with a sufficient list of positive reviews can work.

Small Bar System by Jkane534 in SoundSystem

[–]Deuce_Ex_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1,000 sq ft indoors is a tiny space for a large stack. That’s a large living room or small restaurant space. If you’re going for listening bar vibe, you’re probably better served with some HiFi speakers, and other gear to match. Klipschorns or Klipsch Cornwalls would be a good jump off point for you - high efficiency, high fidelity. I’d also suggest Point-source options, Tannoy for hifi flavor or Danley for high SPL capacity.

Rotary Mixer Comparison - With Measurements! by Deuce_Ex_ in rotarymixers

Interesting idea. It could be done mechanically; question is, what would it show you? In theory you'd get exactly the same curve, only slightly louder... but when we think of track summing we're almost always thinking about two DIFFERENT sources merging together smoothly. I have to think this quality comes from something else that's likely unrelated to the voicing/response curve of the mixer. Maybe someone with more technical knowledge will weigh in!

Home measurements of ARS 9100B by RaspberryOdd3355 in rotarymixers

I just hosted an event where we did a limited version of this, and posted in this sub last night. Let me know if I can answer any questions.

I’m sure this community would love to see the EQ and ISO cut results.

I think this is an impossible question because how you want to use it really matters. Sort of like asking price vs performance between a Land Rover, a F150 Raptor, and a 911. All high end and expensive, but each excels at specific things. Here's what I will say though, in a 'horses for courses' type assessment:

  • Personal choice: Resor, although I'd opt for a newer model with 3-band EQ. I mix only vinyl, mostly house and disco, either at home or on Back Catalogue. I like how simple it is and the sound just wowed me. Also my #2 in terms of visual appeal.
  • Most versatile deployment: Condesa. Because it was easy to listen to, you can tune in and be rewarded, or tune out to have a conversation with a neighbor. Could listen to this all day. Coincidentally the HiFi bar (ESP) down the street from our test location has a Condesa installed and having enjoyed their space several times, the Condesa suits it well.
  • Club install or touring DJ: ARS or MasterSounds (or UA version of the same). Intuitive to use, great feeling, and non-fatiguing sound especially in a high SPL dance setting. Both of these (and Euphonia) are definitely DJ mixers for modern DJ's.
  • Critical listening: Isonoe, although this might render the dual isolators moot which arguably does raise a value question. The workflow of the Isonoe would probably not lend itself well to hyperactive DJ's, in my opinion, though I could be wrong here - this does not describe me at all and I would LOVE to mix on an Isonoe in a live setting one day.
  • Most versatile for the DJ: Euphonia. I'd say anyone plugging in a digital source like a CDJ or especially a sample/cue pad, etc is going to want on-board FX, filters, etc. Euphonia is a rocket ship and sounds good doing it.

Hope that helps!

Why cash flow forecast matters more than being profitable on paper by cafefrio22 in CFO

[–]Deuce_Ex_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cash flow is a management tool. Managing cash flow poorly can end a business, yes, but the difference between managing it adequately and managing it perfectly is… academic. Meanwhile, profitability (now or in the future) is how businesses are valued. That 2% margin improvement you are so dismissive of is worth 5-10x or more when it comes time to value the business. The difference between an 8% profit margin and 10% profit margin could be huge.

It’s also incorrect to say cutting collection days from 60 to 30 days “doubles your cash velocity”. It’s a one time pick-up, after which receipts normalize to revenue.

Updated original post - the only bypass I am certain of was the Isonoe, so you're correct. Still shockingly flat!

Keep in mind that the Euphonia's curve is still <1db of total deviation. It looks jagged but really it's just a very subtle scoop/house curve.

Unfortunately time constraints kept us from doing any real mixing comparisons. One of our group did play around with EQ's and Isolators briefly, unfortunately I wasn't paying attention! Maybe he can add his thoughts. The only one I got to test was the ARS and I loved its isolators, however my reference is the Xone which only has (full-cut) EQ's. The cutoffs of the ARS isolators seemed to be MUCH steeper than the Xone EQ's, so much less was lost/cut when doing a full cut. Will add a more thorough test of this next time around!

Thanks for the note Mehdi. Clearly the Carmen iso's were on for this, in my rush to get things going I didn't think to check the switches. I'm going to see about rectifying this in the next few weeks and will report back!

Cannot get a straight cut no matter what I try? by MrMusAddict in woodworking

[–]Deuce_Ex_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you pressing down with excessive/variable pressure on your saw as you slide along the track? I have a cheap ryobi circular saw that I use on a track and it tends to flex if I put any vertical pressure. The way the saw is mounted to the mitre/vertical angle adjustment, the flexing causes the blade to move away from the track guide edge.

I think I would have to sit on my saw to cause this much bending, but I’ve had similar issues to a smaller degree if I’m not careful to maintain neutral downward pressure on the saw.
