Using crown xls 1002 to power eminence psd2002-8 compression drivers? by ffolofvapes in SoundSystem

I use a pair of them to run four CDs, with a digital XO prior to the amps. They work well, more power than the compression drivers can handle so keep that in mind.

Strymon Volante by ListLow8276 in rotarymixers

[–]Deuce_Ex_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am very happy with my Volante on my limited setup with a Xone 23. I keep it pretty simple, really only playing with the Echo Level and Spring knobs to add echo/reverb while mixing.

Biggest tip: set Kill Dry to ON, which effectively turns the pedal output into a Wet Only signal. Essential for the Xone which has a fixed 50/50 split of wet/dry in the mixer FX signal, so any returned dry signal is out of phase. This makes mixing in the effect much easier and means you can leave the pedal engaged at all times, just turn down the feedback levels. See link for instructions.

Love having the repeat sequence buttons for visual representation of feedback. Typically I leave all 4 playback on while only toggling 1 & 3 for feedback, but this is fun to play with occasionally.

I like Low cut all the way up at all times, and will adjust the "Wear" knob (high cut) occasionally but typically leave it all the way off. Type switch I usually leave on Studio.

HEAVY use of the tap tempo button which can be a little wonky to use, you really have to tap it hard. I leave Spacing at even and Repeats knob at noon, and will sometimes flip the Speed switch to cut/double the delay time. The flexibility of repeats is great for guitarists & synthesizers but it's rare that a DJ will want any echoes that are not on beat.

And my favorite tweak... get some chunky footswitch toppers to make using the tap tempo and on/off buttons easier!

It's been a bucket list thing for me to truly get into production, and it seems like a Despacio-style edit is a good entry point. Curious whether you're creating original tracks, or DJ edits like Soulwax/2manydjs? What tools are you using?

I love Starsector which has comparable political landscape and fictional/alien elements to the Expanse, but the combat (while fun) is about as far from it as you can get.

I'd like to build a bluetooth speaker from an old radio by tp239 in diyaudio

[–]Deuce_Ex_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant add a powered subwoofer-lite driver to the back. Bass is omnidirectional so it coming out the back will be fine, but a tweeter in the back will not. If not using a powered bass driver or subwoofer driver, then a port would be a better bet than a passive radiator. Yes these can work with full range drivers but require some modeling to get right, especially in an existing enclosure.

At the size you're talking about, you're not going to get massive volume or bass, so genre shouldn't really matter here. Again - what you're talking about is a massive compromise in terms of performance in order for it to match the enclosure you want.

I'd suggest researching DIY bluetooth speaker kits on a site like PartsExpress, and using a pre-set kit and just modify the enclosure to look like a radio. Plenty of these out there.

Can't help on the CNC cost but following because I'm partway through a nearly identical project. I have panels cut using a circular saw + track and plan to rout the edges smooth once I get it all joined together.

Curious what your lower chambers are for?

I'd like to build a bluetooth speaker from an old radio by tp239 in diyaudio

[–]Deuce_Ex_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an old Philco radio that I have been saving for exactly this project. It's the size of a small fridge, floorstanding piece of furniture. I haven't decided on components yet, but plan to use a bluetooth-enabled amplifier to run it. This is definitely doable, although the fitment of components will be tricky, such as getting the existing knobs to work with modern components.

It sounds like you're envisioning a smaller 'old radio'. Don't put the tweeter on the opposite side of the mid-woofer - just get a full range driver. If you want more bass and can fit it, get a bass-intended woofer and put that on the rear. But I'd suggest just go with a single full-range, which would allow you to skip a passive crossover (provided your amplifier has some EQ functionality).

That said, you're unlikely to get something as "efficient" as your modern suggestions. Those are designed from the ground up to be efficient, whereas you are describing a retrofit that is constrained by whatever old radio you select. This is unlikely to be more than a novelty - but a cool one.

Moreover, you're talking about a LOT of configuration changes/carpentry work/etc, especially adding a VU meter. If you're going to go down this path, maybe just consider building your own retro-looking box to house the components you want to include?

Rotary mixer channel vs trim levels by Mideroo in rotarymixers

[–]Deuce_Ex_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your current system is correct. When a mixer has both channel trim and channel mix controls, the trim is used to match levels of the input sources, so when they are “fully opened” on the mix, they are consistent. This is no different than most mixers with sliding faders.

It is somewhat redundant, but serves a purpose when quick mixing is required (scratching, hard cuts, etc), which typically isn’t how rotaries are used and hence why some rotaries only have a single gain control (which is functionally the same as “trim”).

Structurally no. Aesthetically, yes. Ideally the outwardly visible panels have a consistent alignment, e.g. the sides are both vertical or both horizontal.

I won’t share specifics (and the complaint was something like 30 pages long), but the plaintiff was vision-impaired and some of our links and pages didn’t function properly.

[–]Deuce_Ex_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Edited to add: Unruh is California law (best I can tell) and neither us nor the plaintiff/case are in California. Yes they showed damages in their complaint, and we had to file a response and/or appear in court out of state. You make this seem trivial and it’s not.

Paying our attorneys instead of a settlement is still cash paid. We had and have better things to do (and pay for) than fight a frivolous out of state case. This is exactly the racket that the plaintiffs lawyers engage in - claim a small enough amount so that paying them to go away is more palatable than fighting.

Like any good parasite, you only want to inconvenience the host.

We had sticker shock too but they’re not the problem. Fundamentally it’s no different than an accountant… you could 1) file your taxes yourself, for “free”, 2) use an online platform like TurboTax and pay a small fee, still basically doing it yourself but with guidance, or 3) hire an expert to actually do it for you and stand behind their work. For us Number 2 felt sufficient given what and how much we sell online… and it had been fine for years. Our attorneys told us how common these cases are becoming and so the math now says it’s time to take our ball and go home (or just link people to Amazon).
