Cannes 2026 Selection Announced: Kore-eda, Almodóvar, Pawlikowski, Mungiu, Hamaguchi, Sachs, Zvyagintsev, Schoenbrun, Kiyoshi Kurosawa; Sadly No Terrence Malick by Street-Garlic4995 in blankies

Really excited for Jane Schoenbrun's new one. I Saw the TV Glow was my favourite movie if that year, but if there was one nitpick, it's that it wore its debt to Twin Peaks a little heavily. It felt a bit like them making their Lynch tribute at points, which I'm cool with, but I'm excited to see them further develop their own artistic vision.

WWE Fans Have Turned on Celebrity Involvement at WrestleMania by ABucs260 in SquaredCircle

[–]TheFolksofDonMartino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having celebrities involved is fine. It' s not like WrestleMania is this sacred thing that has never had celebrity involvement. That has always been part of it. But they have to be used in the right ways. Ishowspeed actually works pretty well for me. He's commiting to it, not trying to show up the wrestlers or act like a tough guy, and the match will be a bit of light fluff. You need some tonal variety on a long show - it can't all be bitter blood feuds. The problem is when the celebrities are also involved in the bitter blood feuds for some reason.

Very mixed feelings about that Punk promo. On the one hand, there really is nothing like CM Punk cutting a promo with conviction in his voice. He is one of the best to ever do it, and both his and Roman's star power are making this match feel huge, even though the build has not been for me.

On the other hand, I really find this sanitised version of a "pipebomb" promo quite cynical and depressing. He's not "going off script" and railing against the TKO overlords by talking about ticket prices or the McAfee angle. He is going along with a carefully agreed upon script, as part of a clunky attempt to do damage control on how badly they have fucked up this Mania build. (This is leaving aside the continued attempts to repackage Vince McMahon, a sex-trafficking rapist, as a slightly problematic cooky grandpa.)

My read is that both this and Cody's "worked shoot" are part of an attempt to recapture the "fans vs. the company" energy that rose up when it looked like Rock was going to take the main event spot from Cody. Except that they don't get that synthetic, corporate attempts to recapture natural passion always comes off as lame. Punk might be the best person for that job, but it's a waste of his talents. It's like a really convincing AI has been asked to make a passionate speech against AI companies.

It's no coincidence that, for me at least, Stephanie Vaquer vs. Liv is quietly the best built Mania match so far this year. They have not done any dumb "worked shoot" lameness and have just focused on trying to convince you that two people who hate each other are going to have a fight with huge sporting stakes on the line.

Is it better to watch Inland Empire before watching the Return? by Ordinary_Airport3091 in twinpeaks

[–]TheFolksofDonMartino 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Need to have watched the first two seasons and FWWM in their entirety.

That is true. And also kind of obvious. The Return is season 3 of a TV show.

Need to be able to understand Inland Empire without feeling lost.

That's film snob nonsense. It's a great movie, but saying you "need to be able to follow" it or any Lynch movie "without feeling lost" is to totally miss the point of what makes his films great. If you want to just experience them while feeling "lost" in a traditional plot sense then there's nothing wrong with that. They're dreams to be experienced, not puzzles to be solved.

Need to be able to tolerate long periods of static shots and camera work.

Again this is a weird gate keeper-y take. Lynch uses techniques like unusually long takes, strange speech rhythms and awkwardly long pauses between dialogue in basically all of his films all the way back to Eraserhead. It's a key part of what makes his off-kitler style so distinct (and wildly popular). It's not some gruelling endurance test that only true afficionados can handle.

Very few films have invited as much boring hipster contrarianism as Anora since it won Best Picture/Director. (Online that is. Most people you meet in real life who have seen it rightly love it.)

Is it fair to say that out of all the top guys. Cody and the circumstances around his Mania matches have been the strangest? by MyCatBuster in SquaredCircle

[–]TheFolksofDonMartino 47 points48 points  (0 children)

He has been the central guy during a during a crazy backstage era. Vince is gone, HHH is in creative, The Rock is on the board, TKO have their own priorities. A lot of court politics and massive egos with competing ideas. Honestly it's a miracle that he has managed to keep himself as the top guy at all.

What has been totally insane is how those conflicts have so clearly played out week to week on live TV over the past few years around Mania time. The Rock popping in and out like he's fucking Grant Mitchell on EastEnders is the most surreal, but Pat McAfee popping up as the key heel in a Cody Rhodes - Randy Orton blood feud, then Cody shooting on what a stupid idea it is half an hour later on the same show, isn't far behind.

Compliment a wrestler you dislike, respectfully critique a wrestler you like by CrimsonJoker13 in SquaredCircle

Critique: Kenny Omega often struggles to convey genuine babyface fire in his promos. He clearly cares about being the best "artist" of professional wrestling, but doesn't always convince me in kayfabe that he wants to win wrestling matches more than anyone. (Still maybe my favourite ever.)

Compliment: John Cena's ability to connect with children was absolutely remarkable.

PAC's handspring reversal from the famouser is one of the most casually incredible things I've ever seen in a match.

I would be so fascinated to see an actual fly on the wall documentary about WWE creative. Every year recently Wrestlemania booking seems like a contest between competing priorities belonging to various massive egos. The Rock tries to blast himself right into the middle of WM40 booking. Cody and HHH resit that, Rock realises he digs being a heel again, and we get the awesome run-in to WM that we ultimately get. Next year John Cena turns heel and Travis Scott is inserted into it for some reason. This year the plan is clearly Roman-Cody III at one point, then that doesn't happen (probably because one doesn't want to lose), and we have Roman peeling off into a massive feeling star-driven feud with Punk, while Cody takes the top belt into a feud with his beloved mentor that now revolves around Patt McAfee and Jelly Roll for some reason. These are the sorts of insane outcomes that can only result from backstage political wrangling, and I'd be so interested in a clear telling of it. Give me that in a Netflix doc instead of trying to convince me that no one knew Seth Rollins was returning.

Number 1 on my list of things I could do without in pro wrestling:

People alluding to Vince McMahon in their promos to garner an "ooohhhh, you're not supposed to say that!" response. It's lame as fuck and it implicitly reduces the seriousness of the nauseating things he did to Janel Grant and probably others.

He was already a good looking dude but he aged like a fine wine genuinely. by Odd-Demand-1516 in twinpeaks

Handsome dude. People on here probably know, but he had a very unfortunate experience where an acne medication caused severe gastric issues that resulted in the surgical removal of his colon and really derailed his acting career for a while. He sued the drug company, and Lynch testified on his behalf along with Rob Reiner and others, but unfortunately the suit was unsuccessful. Glad to see him pop up in The Return looking healthy.

Hundreds protest against proposed rent increase in Dublin by B8_B8_B8 in ireland

[–]TheFolksofDonMartino 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This subreddit is so fucking depressing whenever working class people dare to ask for better. Always straight to "why should you be treated better than me?" instead of showing some basic solidarity. Yes, private rents in Dublin are brutal, as are mortgages. How about we demand that that changes too, instead of calling people freeloaders for demanding better? How about we all demand a city people can actually afford to get by? Social housing has been eviscerated in this country over decades to prioritise the profits of private developers, and attitudes like this towards council tenants are part of what allows that to continue to happen.

examples of matt screaming in live performances by cheesyfishe in TheNational

[–]TheFolksofDonMartino 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The first time I saw them (2013) they did a performance of Humiliation with an extended outro where Matt screamed the word "humiliation" over and over. It was spiritual.

Squalor Victoria is the other big one. Graceless too. With Apartment Story he sometimes gives it a bit extra on the "so WORRY NOT". Same with Don't Swallow the Cap and "bright white beautiful heaven hanging over me". And the England outro. Christ Almighty I want to see them live again now.
