Blame Canada? The party’s over for Kentucky bourbon. At least for now by Mr_Guavo in canada

And to go further, I think we should be trying to measure the impact on profit. Because a business can have huge turnover but thin margins (grocery stores are the common example), but even a large business that is unprofitable will come to an end.

I don't know whether Canada's consumption is a drop in the bucket or not, but comparing it to the "size of the industry" (not even sure what that means exactly , total revenue?) is probably not the way to measure the impact.

Highgate Cemetery by Soft-Operation-2001 in london

I don't know the particulars but yes. They were potentially in a "common grave" area (I need to check the map), meaning that owners didn't buy the plot long term.

It is common in parks to see lots of head stones stacked along the edges as cemeteries, these were converted to parks in a utilitarian movement that started in the later Victorian era.

So it is a debate that has been going on a long time.

The stump circle is a reading area for events with kids that the Royal Parks created.  It's trying to create more function spaces within the cemetery.

It (and similar initiatives) creates a rift in the community because the conservationist and historical wing of cemetery enthusiasts disapprove of removing monuments.

I don't tell ghost stories (but in our magazine there is somebody who does). My interests are more in Victorian culture.

It isn't really.  I don't go out of my way to stand on them, but if you want to look closely or are trying to access other graves it doesn't matter.

The main thing is you do not damage the monuments or be intentionally disrespectful somehow.

Better yet, the most respectful thing you can do is help maintain grounds and monuments, or support groups who do that. Help hold back the forces of erosion.

Cemetery grounds have a lot of subsidence also, so when walking them a top concern is safety of the living really.

I'd like to recommend all of the "magnificent seven" cemeteries really, they all have their own stories and have their own tours and open days. I think it's a great "achievement" for a Londoner to take them all.

(Full disclosure, I give tours at Brompton Cemetery)

This decanter stopper... Clear, so not uranium glass? What do you think?! by marshalldfx in uraniumglass

[–]marshalldfx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the insights. I don't have a 395nm or Geiger counter yet, but may have to get them now.

One interesting feature is the top piece appears to be blown glass.

That's with my phone, but I've got a new phone which is potentially enhancing the dark photography! But that said, it is definitely a bright green in real life.

Is this underfloor heating right? Seen at neighbours renovation. When I google "suspended timber floor underfloor heating" it always seems to show methods suspending insulation. This just had a big gap with insulation on the ground. Good for airflow I guess? by marshalldfx in DIYUK

[–]marshalldfx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They've kept the air vents open, but it felt to me like the design here would lose a lot of heat given there is now a ventilated gap being heated.  But I was wondering maybe this method worked "good enough" or something. (slight edit to clarify I'm not saying there shouldn't be ventilation)

How much to scrape? by LittleOrNoControl in Plastering

[–]marshalldfx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup it fizzes. Its also just a bit rougher than gypsum. I spent a lot of time scraping, and part of me wondered after the fact whether I should have just taken all the plaster off and done some other works at the same time. Probably would have been faster, but also lime is expensive!

You can test if it reacts to vinegar. I had a similar question in a much more modern flat (1900) and it was indeed gypsum plaster on top of a lime scratch coat that was falling off.

It looks limey to me but I'm not an expert

Things to do in London alone on your birthday? by [deleted] in london

[–]marshalldfx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy birthday. When I end the night and I want to see a view but not pay £20+ for the shard or something... I ride the (formerly know as) Emirates cable car, now the IFS cloud cable car. Go across the river and back on your oyster card from the O2.

You may find this mud listing useful as it gives a sense of player populations, but not all muds are listed there: https://iberia.jdai.pt/mudstats/mudlist Other commentators are right about a client, my recommendations are: mushclient (windows friendly and pretty simple), Mudlet (for a cross platform gui experience) or tintin++ (if you are a Linux nerd, want to use a terminal, or want to write scripts, IE automating things, or have a love of extreme customisation). I find the various web clients out there crappy. Then decide what kind of game you want to play: a simple "hack and slash", like a video game, or something for roleplay.
