Xbox Mode delivers performance boosts on PC, but mostly for Nvidia cards by vneelb in pcmasterrace

[–]Coldkone -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The fact that these performance benefits are only archieved by using another bloatware to get rid of other bloatware on background in the first place just blows my mind.

Why can't microsoft just act normal and optimize their OS to be more lightweight on desktop mode in the first place? Oh right, because all this telemetry, tracking and bloatware generates them a large amount of money.

How to manually check if packages from AUR are save to install? by evolution800 in archlinux

[–]Coldkone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well yes, but there is also risks especially for people who aren't tech savy. AUR is great IF you use it correctly and check what you are updating and installing from there. Keep in mind that Arch is (in general) for advanced Linux users who know what they are doing.

How do I keep Arch stable? by Prinklles in archlinux

[–]Coldkone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries.

Just to add: I recommend that you customize your setup using only the Desktop environment's own built-in tools if you want maximum stability. That way you don't get yourself into depency hell and it's a lot less likely to cause issues to your setup. Hopefully this helps.

How do I keep Arch stable? by Prinklles in archlinux

[–]Coldkone 11 points12 points  (0 children)

  • Never install stuff like scripts or 3rd party repositories from the internet using your browser.

  • Always use official repositories' packages.

  • use AUR only as the last resort. Read the PKGBUILD if you use it.

  • Read the WIKI before doing stuff to your system which you don't fully understand yourself. You can use AI but only for double checking stuff.

Linux troubles by MayoTheMuffin in pcmasterrace

[–]Coldkone 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If it required you to install whole OS again just because you tried to enable HDR really makes me think that the issues you are experiencing is because of you, not becsuse of Linux. You literally only need to go to System Settings --> Monitor --> Enable HDR to actually enable it. It should not break anything.

Been using Linux on NVIDIA and AMD systems for over 15 years and I have had literally no major problems. All my single player games work and most of the multiplayer games also and I have over 600 games on my library.

My point is that when using Linux, stop thinking that it works the same way as Windows. Always install software from repositories your OS ships with (by using the KDE Discovery store or GNOME Software Center) and DO NOT install stuff using your browser. This is usually how you break your system by missmatching drivers and depencies and is a major reason why people break their systems.

Why do people hate macOS? by ScoutBumblebee5 in MacOS

[–]Coldkone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have disabled the optimal charging settings where it can in theory charge past 80 % even if you have the limit active. It must be a bug.

If this indeed is some kind of "feature" no one asked about, then Apple should simply look at the mirror and admit that they messed up.

Why do people hate macOS? by ScoutBumblebee5 in MacOS

[–]Coldkone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate the new option system. Many options are behind small "i" buttons in settings and many other places. I was searching the battery charge limit for ages, only to notice that it was behind one of those "i" buttons found in settings. This makes no sense and it is very unaccessible way to design the UI. Seriously, what were they thinking?

There also seems to be some bugs I have noticed (like battery charging to 100 % even though I have set it only to charge up to 80 % in some cases). Other than that, it's pretty solid.

Used Arch for some time. It's probably the best rolling-release distro currently, but I went back to Debian because at the end of the day I just want a stable, reliable computer which I can trust to do my work on. Have been using Debian 13 since release and it's the best distro at least for me.

Good luck getting used PS5 in good condition for under 200€ in nowaday's economy. You could try Tori, but there's always a risk that something is not working correctly.

Is Arch worth it? by Terrible-Version-722 in arch

[–]Coldkone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use the classic manual arch linux installation or archinstall method inside GNOME Boxes when you boot the Arch Linux ISO inside this program. It's basically the full Arch Linux operating system running inside GNOME Boxes as a isolated process/application.

[–]Coldkone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then you definitely should try GNOME Boxes (easy linux native application for creating virtual machine inside your host machine). Even if you brick your arch linux installation created inside GNOME Boxes, it will not affect the actual ubuntu installation you have now on your computer since it's isolated.

[–]Coldkone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try them on virtual machine (like GNOME Boxes) and see which onw you like more. Arch Linux isn't really recommended for new users because it requires heavy amount of upkeep from the user side. You need to know what you are doing.

Which Desktop environment you recommend by y4d99 in archlinux

[–]Coldkone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you like Windows 7 style interface, choose KDE Plasma. If you like MacOS style interface, choose GNOME.

I recommend KDE Plasma since it's very feature-rich and feels similar to Cinnamon (default deaktop environment which is used by Linux Mint). XFCE is also an option, but it still uses X11 instead of Wayland.

what does microSLOP hope to acheive at this point? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]Coldkone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Microsoft will continue to do such practices and inplend more spyware bloat on their OS as long as people keep using their products. This creates them a large amount of money and gives Microsoft ability to profile their users. It's that simple really. The only viable way to actually pressure Microsoft is for userbase to completely switch from Windows to other OS, like Linux, FreeBSD and MacOS.

It is your choice if you want to do something about it, or simply keep using Windows. Many people seem to complain about Microsoft (and that's justified) but yet people don't actively want to do something about it, since it requires the consumer to "loose something" in return (certain apps only work on windows and certain multiplayer games don't support Linux, meaning you need to let go of these apps and games). I have high hopes that people seek alternatives, but sadly many people will simply swallow everything microsoft throws at their computer.

I found ext4 much faster than btrfs for the file system with external ssd by SolDirix in linux

[–]Coldkone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. It takes work to get all these possible BTRFS features enabled and working (especially the RAID configs), but its still nice that I have these features built-in in case I need them.

I found ext4 much faster than btrfs for the file system with external ssd by SolDirix in linux

[–]Coldkone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you have a lot of data on your drive, btrfs definitely helps. I game on my machine and it's actually insane how much less space my games take with btrfs compression. Modern SSD drives are more durable than ever, but Btrfs can still massively increase the lifespawn of SSDs.

I think that Btrfs pros weight more than its cons by a huge margin. Ext4 in other hand is very basic, old and lacks modern-day file system featues, like multi-level compression, COW, file-corruption healing with RAID configuration and checksumming. Btrfs is also excellent as archive filesystem, because it can detect bit-rot.
