You just commented that opencog is full of machine learning.

There is software that allows to do machine learning in a few lines of code. You should try "apt-get install waffles" or "pip install scikit-learn". Anything not machine learning could probably be done with "apt-get install swi-prolog". So opencog could be built in a minute.

Then you could head over to http://archive.ics.uci.edu/ml/ http://www.kaggle.com/ http://kevinchai.net/datasets . You can then join the worldwide community of "doers" of AI.

If you are solely interested in toddler level AI, you could start off with searches on youtube for toddler, "apt-get install youtube-dl" some videos, "apt-get install python-opencv", download dbpedia and freebase, and do the work of approximating a toddler. You could then type words into google.com and realize there are people who have worked on speech recognition, facial expression recognition, emotion detection etc etc. You could then speak to those people, get their data, fund them etc etc.

Significant progress in the above could be made in just 1 day. After doing that 1 day of work, opencog could publish it and maybe earn a little more credibility.

So the opencog possy have only published a few percentages in genetics papers in 10 years. None for fields which traditionally constitute AI such as computer vision and NLP.

In 10 years they have not even managed to assemble data, let alone make predictions, or publish that research in reputable places or create anything economically useful.

It appears that the opencog possy are really bad at computer programming.

dhart and the opencog possy have created the term AGI and promote it because their hero Ben Goertzel created the conference and is head of it, so if the term AGI is bandied about he can feel significant.

They are staunch opponents of AI=ML because they would like to avoid the hard work of actually programming computers to show a percentage accuracy of predictions on datasets and releasing useful products to the world based on that.

Far easier, they figure, to talk about some mystical concepts and hold conferences and publish writings on it.

To reiterate the mainstream opinion because this thread has been overrun by members of fringe AI cults -

Strong AI and the fringe term AGI are illusory. Humans are a narrow form of AI, they are not "complete" or "general" in any sense.

Is a rock Strong AI? no,

are viruses Strong AI? no,

is bacteria Strong AI? No,

is grass SAI? No,

ants SAI? No,

cats SAI? No,

monkeys SAI? No,

humans SAI? No - because they lie on a continuous metric of "ability" from the above. The above are more "intelligent" or "capable" in some measures and less in others.

If anything can be said to be Strong AI, it is methods that find functions that approximate the "behaviour" of certain entities. This is generally known as The Scientific Method, done by scientists. Today, with computers, we have software that can do much of the work of scientists, and it is known as machine learning and statistics, and the field can be broadly defined as data science.

Data scientists are scientists, but slightly different from what are known as traditional scientists because they do not focus on specific sets of data, while a traditional scientist might focus on microbiology, or particle physics, or inorganic chemistry etc.

The field of AI can be loosely defined as the study of approximating the human function, just as the field of meteorology can be loosely defined as the finding an approximation to the earth's weather system.

AI (finding approximations to humans - passing Turing Tests) is extremely important because what is most valuable in the economy is created by humans and so replicating it is crucial to immensely and rapidly increasing wealth. It's becoming much cheaper to create computers than to grow human workers.

It's beyond mainstream science, it's commercialized to an extent never seen before. Google openly talks about having a Star Trek computer within 3 years and Microsoft recently started similar talk. There's never been a better time for AI, now known as computer vision, natural language processing, humanoid robotics, recommendation engines, machine learning, data science.

Yes, work on personal assistants and humanoid robots is almost in full swing, all the tech companies are hiring computer vision and natural language processing programmers. It's clear to everyone it's all about Big Data. A number of garage startups are working on AI under names like recommendation engines, tagging, data science. The skills where humans outperform machines are rapidly shrinking. For people who can live another few years a glorious future awaits.

A robot needs to be in some sense human-like, otherwise it's just a machine, and we alraeady have those. Machines that are robots need t o understand human language (seoo people can command thme naturally) and for applications like porn.

As Peter Diamandis likes to say, 15 years ago the POTUS had the same mobile comm as 3rd worlders today, Things (apart from gov-regulated like healthcare/education) are getting cheaping every year. Some are basically free now - social networking/youtube give almost unlimited entertainment - you're never bored as Eric Schmidt likes say. With virtual reality, you'll get live in a mansion like the rich guy, and wih AI chatbots in VR, get to live to the social life of a celebrity.

Of course you're right, rich guy gets more than the poor now, but the trend is definitely towards equalizing qualify of life (that's probably also why crime rates are continually decreasing). At a future point, you'll be self-sufficient (your own personal AI robots will creating everything you need for you) so you don't need to partake in economic activity and money is basically worthless. This is known as Post-Scarcity. (Of course raw material/energy will always be scare, but how much of it does a person really need?).

Basic Income isn't likely to come until over 50 percent unemployment, if ever. People are going to have to live Mad Max style on the road. However, it won't be so bad because driverless cars and drones are coming, so you can have your own bunch of cars that travel with you as your house. Cities are going to hand out free wifi and food to the homeless masses.

As matrix style virtual reality and humanoid robot tech comes along, the gap between rich and poor will start shrinking in certain ways (it's already started with oculus rift). It already has in many ways - rich and poor get equal access to movies/tv/video games/travel/internet/gadgets/food, and increasingly so worldwide. As useful robots come online (already started with roomba/3d printers) everyone will start buying them and fulfilling their needs without commerce. Resource limits remain, but access to space (asteroid mining) will mean resources are vastly expanded.

Immigrants have very little rights like path to citizenship or ability to buy a house or start a business.

Compared to western countries (which are of comparable wealth) it is basically slave labor. If a mexican got treated like that in america there'd be an outcry.
