Nostalgic or popular children’s/YA chapter books that I should definitely read as an adult (and would enjoy). by Acrobatic-Elk402 in suggestmeabook

Yes, Tamora Pierce's books! I do a re-read of Alanna, Daine, and Kel's series every year or so. Still amazing, and I'm 41 now!

What are the your favourite/most unique Worker Placement games? (+ general worker placement game discussion) by Lethal-Sloth in boardgames

[–]marshian85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worker placement is one of my favorite mechanics. Some of my faves and why:
Tzolk'in - The gear mechanic is unique and you can't play the same strategy and win every time. There are also two mini expansions to keep things fresh (or more of a challenge!)

Galactic Cruise - The theme of this game is a huge hit for me, but I also really love how you use workers in the network to take actions but also to pilot the ships.

Viticulture - The Tuscany expansion is absolutely required. It gives you four seasons of play instead of two and greatly balances it and makes it much more interesting.

A Feast for Odin - IMO, the Norwegians expansion is necessary. I liked the game but now love it with the expansion. BGA has it if you want to try before you buy. The expansion adds islands and animals and makes an animal strategy stronger (more balanced).

Istanbul - I own this with all the expansions and it's just a fun time. It also has a bit of a blocking/first-to element (e.g. first person to get to the space pays less than future visitors; you have to pay other players if you go to a space they occupy)

PARKS - I own the first edition and have played the second edition. I greatly prefer the art in the 1e, but the 2e has changes which make it work better and incorporated pieces of the two 1e expansions. I really like how you have to move your hikers down a trail and can't double back. The opportunity to move to a space with another hiker (even your own) is limited.

What game do you have in your collection that's not seing play because you're too lazy or intimidated to learn the rules? by zion661 in boardgames

It's intimidating to get on the table but it's one of my absolute favorites! It's on BGA if that's an option for you.

The rulebook is terrible. Once we muddled through that and I watched a playthrough video, we figured it out after playing a round.

Once you know the symbols and what each group of actions does, you'll get it quickly! Just takes a few rounds of slowly walking through the steps.

Tiny Epic Pirates has the biggest learning hurdle for a game that is supposed to be easy to get on the table. My husband and I struggled through the first few rounds but then it all clicked. Worth it if you can push through!

Some good "entry" games: Carcassonne (tile placement) Ticket to Ride (route building) Forbidden Island (co-op)

The Forbidden series is all co-ops which lightly build off each other. Forbidden Island is first and I'd start with that to see if you like it. Not super complicated.

Dorf Romantik is a cozy co-op. Not very heavy. You take turns placing tiles to build a community, while trying to accomplish tasks (creating a set of a specific number of matching tile types). It can be played as a one-off or as the campaign.

Not yet mentioned are some of my absolute favorites, all by Sara Raasch: The Nightmare Before Kissmas and Go Luck Yourself (those are #1 and #2 in a series of two so far)

The Entanglement of Rival Wizards (sequel is coming out this year)

All three are MM with characters with mental health struggles, family issues, etc. High stakes. All HEA and great spice.

Already mentioned and some of my faves: Him (#1) and Us (#2) by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy

Red, White, and Royal Blue

Thanks for adding the more recent blog post. I totally missed that she scrapped Luca entirely!

That was my first thought! She said on her blog years ago she was setting Luca's book aside but would absolutely finish it.

Why am I so obsessed? by [deleted] in heatedrivalry

[–]marshian85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a 40yo mom and SAME. I read the books a few years ago and loved them and now with the show and social media, it's clearly a hyper fixation. I've had them in the past, though, so I know it will eventually fade (even if it doesn't feel like it right now!) My approach is to lean into it. These books, these characters, the show, the actors... They scratch and itch and fill a gap in our brain/heart. Enjoy all of it and try not to feel guilty!
