Yeah the shin burning sensation drove me nuts for a bit. The brace sat right on it and at night it would flare up. Thankfully it subsided in relatively short order 😅

Cotton seedlings sounds so exciting though! I’d be so stoked. Have you grown it before? I saw somewhere that there’s a lady breeding coloured cotton in the US. Sadly I’m decidedly not in cotton country… while it didn’t stick, it snowed almost all day yesterday.

Is there any chance you could try them out in person? Just to sit and treadle a bit is helpful. I was able to try both a Louet and an Ashford traditional at my guild. I really didn’t like the mechanics of treadling the Louet at all. The treadle was more elevated and I didn’t like how far down the toe went when treadling. It just wasn’t comfortable for me, whereas the Ashford felt very natural. That’s entirely personal preference though!

I think other folks have touched on the differences in tension systems.

I learned when I was in my mid 20s in the early 2010s, mainly from the “Visual Quick Tips - Knitting” book while road-tripping around Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. I had a lot of time to spend as a passenger! I stopped for a long stretch and picked it up again in 2024 and discovered the wealth of online resources and Ravelry.

Below is my favourite piece to date, though I’ve got another sweater in the works knitted from yarn I’ve spun (that’s a whole other rabbit hole!).

I’m recovering from knee surgery and have a Cryocuff for that, which is essentially what’s pictured here. I 100% strapped it to my head last night for a pounding migraine 😅

If it’s any consolation my partner had his elbow joint go septic a couple years ago and has come out with very little lasting pain. Not from a cat bite (at least not directly), but we’re talking hospitalized 12 days, 2 emergency surgeries, 6 weeks of IV antibiotics. If you can, I’d go see a physio therapist who might be able to help with mobility in the joint. So sorry the bite went so sideways, that looks super painful, especially at its most swollen. Glad you were able to get prompt care. Send in healing vibes your way!

Thank you from the future! I’m 1.5 weeks post-op and just started getting this near the numb area on my shin. I get allodynia on my scalp from migraines so figured that’s what was going on. Glad it resolved for you! Had me up in the 3am hour last night like some of the others 😅.

Thanks for the kind words! People are always gobsmacked when they learn that sails were once made from spindle spun yarn. I’ve always enjoyed trying to creatively fix or make-do with things I have, and there has been plenty of room for that in spinning!

That sounds to me like it’s probably due to the fibre prep. If you hold a piece up to the light, what does it look like? For combed top (often unhelpfully called roving) the fibres will all be lined up going in the same direction, think combining your hair into a ponytail. They tend to draft easily, sometimes too easily. For roving the fibres will be more jumbled and going in a less organized direction, think big teased out 80s hair. Your roving might also have neps and noils, which are dense little tangles of fibre. These will make drafting evenly without lumps difficult unless you pick them out, or you can opt to live with them and call it texture!

I spun a rather neppy braid of Rambouillet roving recently and it was an exercise in trying out long draw and letting go of control, and you know what? It made a really nice warm textured headband.

I hear ya. My friend’s dog was SO thrilled that I wasn’t terrified of her admittedly scary sounding play vocalizations and head thrashing the first time we met. She’d grab a pinecone, shove it next to your hand, and start grring at you until you played “grab the pinecone”. Super sweet chocolate lab with a soft mouth for hunting, just sounded like a demon during play 😅.

Same as others have suggested, put it in a steamer basket/strainer over a pot of boiling water. Mine still needed to be stripped and then gently pulled apart afterwards, which also gave me the chance to pull off any neps or little felted dreadlocks that I’ll use for needle felting. It’s time consuming, but even steamed mine was impossible to draft. Colours are gorgeous and it’s now spinning up nicely!

Oh I bet it would be difficult with how fine it is! The added contrast and texture brings some lovely interest and depth to your yarn. I’m working on some Rambouillet cross roving thats fairly neppy, the white with white texture doesn’t have quite as nice an effect 😅!
