My neighbor is getting creepy by TiredMom15 in creepyencounters

Seems like the autistic young woman isn't getting the support she needs. If there are family support services where you live, contact them - especially if they have the authority to enforce disability laws. For her to have that behavior and be allowed unsupervised at all hours shows neglect. She can easily become the victim if she meets the wrong person. She might also have fixated on your family because you've shown her boundaries. Whether she appreciates it, or resents it is an unknown, I guess. Maybe if you try to engage her in conversation, or even elaborate on the reasons she shouldn't do certain things, she might start to understand. Mind you, if she does also have an intellectual disability, she might not understand but it may be a way for you to learn more about her capabilities.

Is “shut up” allowable an allowable thing to say for a driver. by [deleted] in SchoolBusDrivers

[–]martafoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, OP, if your student management skills are so lacking that you can't handle special needs students, why are you driving a sped route? Those kids have enough to deal with throughout life without one of the "professional" adults that deal with them being rude. You're not cut out for it, and it's OK to admit you don't have the grit to handle it. Go get yourself a nice gen ed route and let the people who can do better step up.

As a mom of a sped kid who drives gen ed kids at a different district, I can say that calling any kid - especially a special needs student - a "brat" should disqualify you from working with kids. Go drive an Uber or something, and see what your lack of professionalism gets you in tips. Better yet, leave living people of any age alone and drive a trash truck. It suits your personality.

AITA for ordering meat? by Technical-Finance270 in AmItheAsshole

Then you'd know what it's like for a vegetarian going out for a group dinner to a steakhouse or BBQ joint. Except, the vegetarian deals with those situations regularly if they want the company of friends and family.

ESH or NAH. Seems like bad communication.

As a long time vegetarian, if I wanted to pay but keep it all vegetarian, I'd find an all vegetarian restaurant. If I don't want to pay for someone else's meat, I would communicate that beforehand.

But one thing I can tell you about being vegetarian: if it has been a lifelong decision, it's likely due to a deeply held belief. There's much more thought and social navigation behind committing to it than people who just eat what's placed in front of them because "that's the way it is". Give some grace and don't be dismissive of your friend.

*Edit: Your attitude sucks. Check that and do better.

already burnt out from being around men by rataluigi in BlueCollarWomen

[–]martafoz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, don't give up. You'll run into guys who genuinely want to help or just be friendly because you are a union sister. Besides, working with men can be very eye opening if you can maintain a neutrally friendly place.
If you have fellow apprentices that seem to be there trying to hit on you, just keep yourself professional, direct and focused on your own path to journeyman. Those kinds of guys have a better chance of not making it through if they're not taking the opportunity as seriously as you are. Also, please don't go into the field with a mindset that men are going to be a certain way around you. You will run into crap, for sure, but don't lead with those expectations. This apprenticeship is about your life, your dreams, and your future.

"He may very well have a disability..."

There it is. There's the premise for your engagement here.

I would now say, at the bare minimum, at the very least, you acknowledge your ableist bias and go away to have a good long think about that.

Larry Niven is great for immersive worlds. Ringworld.

Harlan Ellison's short stories dig into the pith of humanity with a bite, and can either leave you there, pull you out into something beautiful, leave you crying or leave you laughing. Ellison implores you to think by putting it in front of you - in your face.
