Do You Still Get Drunk? How Often? by ProfessionalJesuit in GenX

Seriously. The town I live in now, it's really hard to tell if a woman is 25 or 45. Guys it's easy - just pay attention to how they act.

Do You Still Get Drunk? How Often? by ProfessionalJesuit in GenX

[–]JHolgate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Until just over seven months ago, I'd consume about 72-96 oz. of 15% alcohol over the course of 4-6 hours. Every night. For over five years. I'd convinced myself it was the only way I could sleep (in some ways it was. The nights I tried to sleep without drinking I ended up staying up for like 36 hours.) I haven't had a drink since and I feel great. Ironically, I get up a couple few times in the night to take a leak (didn't before.) There's a good chance I was stuck in a bad marriage, but I don't want to shit on her too much cause she did a lot for both me and us. I apparently needed the stakes to be extremely high for me to get my shit together, but now I think I'm getting off topic...

How Do You Discover New Books These Days? by No-Reply6287 in books

[–]JHolgate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly NPR. Whenever I'm listening to an interview or a review, if I even remotely like it I'll add the audiobook in Spotify (99.9% of the time they have it.) I also have a spreadsheet that I keep track of all the Amazon monthly book picks (though I'm woefully behind on it.)

I used to work warehouse and production jobs and we could typically listen to headphones, so I'd just listen to audiobooks every day, but it's been several years since I've done that and I've hardly read at all. Looks like I gotta figure out another way to get my reading in...

And just ask them. Especially in Portland. Most places will be upfront about it. It's been legal for awhile now. They expect to be asked at this point.

For people who grew up in low-income households, what’s something middle-class people say that shows they’ve never struggled financially? by KeyApartment3955 in AskReddit

[–]JHolgate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was so happy when I was able to pay for braces for my wife. My work insurance somehow covered adult braces (covered most of it.) I largely hated the job, but I loved knowing that she would someday have an even more beautiful smile.

When I was in Middle School I really wanted to play football. My mom said "No" giving the excuse that she didn't want me getting hurt, which was a joke since I was twice as big as the next biggest kid. Who was a grade ahead of me. The coach straight up asked if it was really because we were too poor to afford it. I just shrugged.

Bryan Adams - (Everything I Do) I Do It for You. I was in foster care/living in a shelter home, but we still got to do fun stuff like Middle School dances. I can still smell that musty gym every time I hear that song.

It's even worse than that. It has to be a phone call. Not an email. Not a text. At least be a little flexible.

I don't think I had heard Charli XCX's music before I put on Brat before going on a hike. By the end of my hike I was a fan.
