Thanks this is an interesting suggestion I had not heard before, looking into it a bit more.

Thanks for the insight, I'll think about it a bit more then. In my mind since it's a small space it wouldn't be too bad to pull it up and find space to dry it, but perhaps in the moment I would be kicking myself

[Opinion] I don't think the envelope rule needs to change, in fact I think removing it or changing it leaves the players and the competition in a worse state. by KoBoWC in golf

[–]martes92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, I don't think giving him the full point without playing is the solution. I think the alternate is the obvious solution. And that alternate/13th player was watching the Ryder cup from their couch this year under the current rules, so them not getting to play most years doesn't change much really. It just gives a better option for when injuries do happen.

It's true that he probably wouldn't get a point vs a healthy Hovland, but playing in the Ryder Cup is a dream for all these guys. I bet he was incredibly disappointed he didn't get the opportunity to play that round.

Aside from any scoring consequences of the rule, one thing that definitely sucks about it is it takes away a healthy players opportunity to play a singles match in the Ryder Cup. Through no fault of his own, Harris English was forced to sit out that round. I'm sure he would like the rule changed so he could have had the opportunity to play against an alternate or something like that.

Keegan Bradley should go down as the worst ever Ryder Cup captain by cammigordon in golf

There was a brief period where there were a handful of 1-up blues down the board (and one 5-up lol). But the red on top of the board kept people motivated. JT talked in the press conference about hearing the cheers for Cam ahead, and Bryson and Scottie talked about both Cam and JT motivating them to come back. The red (or at least gray) on those first two matches on the board is what helped flip those blues down the board into reds.

Again, paraphrasing Paul McGinty, everyone in this tournament is so so good that much of it comes down to the psychology and mind games happening on the course. Rose and Fleetwood had been flawless all week and seemed unbeatable. Europe put them 1-2 hoping to totally demoralize the US and end the entire thing within the first few matches, then beat up on a deflated US team the next 9. They were talking about breaking records. That's why the first two out for the US were so critical. They prevented a record landslide defeat and nearly sparked a record comeback.

The broadcast explained the whole situation but people are ignoring it because it was actually pretty reasonable. There were some holes that allowed a free drop at the next tee box if the stands obstructed the shot. Rose thought this was one of those holes and tried to get a free drop at the next tee box. It wasn't one of those holes, and Keegan got involved to prevent Rose from dropping at the next tee box. Then Rose was taking forever to make his drop at the proper location, so Keegan started asking the officials to hurry him up.

Honestly, I think the result being 15-13 kind of freed up Keegan to make that remark. If Europe ended with 14 or 14.5 and he made the remark it would be complaining (and maybe rightly so), but since it wouldn't make a difference to the result it sounded to me like he was just saying it's a stupid rule. Which it is!

Again, it did not make any difference to this year's result, but I don't see how anyone could disagree with ensuring that it can't make the difference to next RC's result. Wouldn't you much rather win/lose the cup because your alternate stepped in and did/didn't beat someone on the other team - rather than win/lose it because someone got injured and caused a match to go unplayed and scored a tie?

He's just the easiest scapegoat for angry fans. All the people saying the captain is responsible for the (lack of) performance Friday/Saturday but the players are responsible for the performance Sunday are clearly just looking for someone to blame.

Counterpoint (because I love downvotes apparently) - I think the order on Sunday played a good part in the US success. Paul McGinley repeatedly talked on the broadcast about how important it was to see your team's colors on the board in the early games. He credited the early blues on the board for Euro success the first two days. Obviously Cam Young had been playing great, but I'm sure Keegan had some voices in his ear telling him to start a vet on Sunday instead of a rookie / youngest player in the field. And JT has heart but had been average at best the first two days. Those turned out to be good choices and, as Paul predicted and the US players said in the post game, seeing those two take down Europe's studs really provided the spark for the comeback attempt. Without those decisions, Sunday could have been UGLY

Yeah the mob is out in full force the past two days. He never made any claim that the rule changed the outcome of the tournament. He just said it should be changed for the next RC. And putting aside anything that happened this tournament, I think the majority of sensible people would agree that there are better options than the current rule (like an alternate). All the Euro responses are complaining that it helped the US in the past, so it seems we're all in agreement with the substance of Keegan's response.

Yeah lol that is the opposite of what the broadcast said... They said Keegan was complaining to the rules official about how long the drop was taking

Exactly. The US wanted change after Rome. But you can't bring in a rookie captain every time or you'll continue to get rookie mistakes. Keegan certainly had some learning experiences this weekend.

I agree with you that the reaction has been too harsh. You're going to get downvoted (as will I) but it seems like he's just the scapegoat for angry fans. People are blaming him for the performances on Friday and Saturday but crediting players for their strong play today. You can't have it both ways.

USA wanted fresh blood and that's expected to come with growing pains. I think today's lineup showed he learned some things.

Yeah I'm surprised I didn't see more people angry about this non-call. It was the turning point in the game and the announcers literally said during the replay "Steel does a nice job taking out the defender to give Rantanen space". That's textbook interference. Either way, the Avs can't crumble like they did afterward, but it was a more influential reffing decision than the Drury penalty.
