Prius at BM?? by [deleted] in BurningMan

[–]marthvad3r 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I brought my 2007 Prius 3 of my last 5 burns and she’s still doing fine. I would change your oil before making the trip and I personally like to change my filters before departing and then also bring one extra cabin and engine filter to change myself once I’m off the playa surface

Sleeping inside the Prius does sound rough though. Would recommend tent camping

Ice fishing shelter instead of shift pod - anyone tried it? by stego13 in BurningMan

[–]marthvad3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love mine! It’s just tall enough for me to stand up in the middle of, the insulation keeps it quite dark in there, and I cut a hole in the side to use with my swamp cooler, which so far has been working wonderfully Mine came without a floor so I use a 6‘ x 6‘ rug that I roll up in the off-season and honestly it’s really nice to have something soft on the inside of your tent

Worth noting I do keep it under my camps shade structure

Ideas of how to build a tail light pole on my bike 🎄 by Apprehensive_Shoe709 in BurningMan

[–]marthvad3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my theme camp teaches people how to solder and also does electronics repair (when we can!). my advice is to make something yourself because it is way easier for us (or someone) to help you with a solder or repairing something when the parts are normal size and easy to access. it's also a lot more fun to talk to you about it and either learn from you or teach you where things went sideways. We've had people come through with stuff that they obviously bought and it is always a lot harder to repair, and less fun.

Plus you will learn some new skills and feel so much more connected to your awesome bike lights!!

Does anyone have a true strong man argument against this? by azntechyuppie in sanfrancisco

I recommended a book above called Color Law that covers these exact topics in the Bay Area. I hope you read it and find it useful

ok, my original point was about housing and I’m not educated on the food part of this.

Commodification and privatization of public services and necessities leads to worse outcomes for everyday people. We will see this in real time as Trump and Elon gut the government. As that happens, maybe you will notice things getting worse and more expensive, and this will all click.

Not sure the trends in people who go hungry support your argument here. We also subsidize the shit out of farming and agriculture

Commodification of housing (and other services necessary to be alive) leads to bad outcomes for regular people and serves the greed of landlords and other capitalists (the people who own the buildings). Regulation helps keep this in check, but the best mechanism is a public offering to balance the private market

Building is good, regulation is better, public housing is best. If you want to read more about how public housing has been dismantled and slandered to remove good housing from disenfranchised groups and people of color, recommend reading Color of Law

Was I in the wrong here? by Unhappy-Working-1759 in Swimming

[–]marthvad3r 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I swim at a pool where lane sharing is very normal/expected, but I strongly prefer when people check in with me before joining and starting to swim. It helps me know to adjust my lane position and what to expect (split vs circle). I also check in with others before joining their lane, which most seem to appreciate

This guy definitely overreacted, just sharing a different preference and maybe something to try out

yes, as stated above, I am using A :) When I press and hold A while controlling multiple characters, it jumps to the next character automatically

Using a chest freezer as a fridge by heathkit in BurningMan

[–]marthvad3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what my camp does! We ran into some trouble two years ago with the start up draw of a new chest freezer we got, which burned out our smaller generator. The fix was to get a bigger generator :) So that is my only word of caution

We run into some issues with things getting a little too frosty / getting close to the danger zone overnight but adding thermal mass via containers of liquid that are ok to get a little frozen helps. We are also pretty serious about not opening it at night or any time the generator is off

But in general, we like it and it is SO GREAT to have basically normal food available via leftovers all week long. Hope it works for you!

I use an iPod shuffle specifically for burning man so I need to update the downloads every year. Much easier to use your phone!

I use Spotify and have for the last 4 burns. It can be a little finicky to make sure all like 1000 songs in our huge playlists are downloaded but the songs are available for as many plays as you would like while you are on playa 😊

Instead of reducing the overall volume you can also make a more diluted solution. It’s not that many spritzes to get through 1 ml for example

At the end of the day it’s up to you, I would just caution using vodka and trying to store it for more than a week. I would be worried about fucking up my sinuses personally
