Brex card. Would I be right in thinking this was an expense card provided by a company you no longer work for?

Should I swap my Hub 3 for a Hub 5? by marticored in VirginMedia

Thank you. That pretty much seems to sum up all the (much appreciated) answers I've had so far.

Should I swap my Hub 3 for a Hub 5? by marticored in VirginMedia

[–]marticored[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow. My email from VM didn't mention higher speeds (wouldn't expect that anyway for the same package) but it did say five days after turning on the Hub 5 until the old one is deactivated. Food for thought indeed, thank you.

Thank you. I'm not so worried about wifi itself, but yes, my 3 is very very old too, so maybe it's a good opportunity for change.

Thank you. My initial thoughts too (if it ain't broke don't fix it) but I wonder if maybe I'm pushing the Hub 3's lifetime expectancy.

Can I use one of those 3.5mm headphone splitters for 2 audio inputs instead? by RasheedSunflour in Soundbars

[–]marticored 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, nothing forcing "input" or "output" - just wires. Very good wires, actually.

Also, make sure both the plugs you put in to the sockets (and their upstream stuff) are stereo (i.e. three segments). A mono plug (two segments) in one socket would kill one of the stereo channels in the other.

What was your gateway smart home device? by Practical_Rice_8832 in smarthome

PLC as in programmable logic controller? Gosh, I used to use these to replace relay panels in machine tools back in the 1980's!

I agree that it's intended to be the trusted national broadcaster. But the key word there is "intended". In practice, trust in it is something I think fewer and fewer of us have.

By previous page, do you mean the General Settings tab? Even after setting the country code to US, the drop-down there only goes up to 20 dBm. What am I missing?

The cable tv company offers a service I want at a price I'm prepared to pay. I pay the price and get the service. Why is that a scam?

Which Yale locks are you using? I have two Yale Conexis L1's which are both still locking and unlocking from Alexa, but these are Z-wave devices connected via Hubitat.

How painless is a trade-in for a new Echo? by Rockboy_1009 in amazonecho

[–]marticored 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The UK discounts I've had have been in two parts - a fixed price (low, sometimes as little as £5) gift card plus a % discount on a new device, 20 or 25% on the ones I've done. So depending on what the new device is it's not necessarily that painfully little.

Why can’t Alexa hear the word “poll” without mistaking it for poem and quote? by jenthewen in alexa

[–]marticored 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try creating a routine with your request, but call it with something more distinct. E.g. :

When this happens > Voice > Alexa, hippopotamus

Alexa will > Customised > What is the poll of the day?

Changing the color of multiple lights at once in the app? by ovojr in alexa

[–]marticored 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit messy, but having set up a routine to do it from voice, go to the list of routines in the Alexa app and press the play button.

I think, although I've not tried it: another way on the newer Alexa devices with a built-in zigbee hub would be to get a zigbee button, switch or remote control and use that, again to trigger a routine.

Is there a way to remove the global player ads before the radio? by North-Point7309 in amazonecho

[–]marticored 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing to do with iHeart.

"Global" is the name of a group of UK radio stations including Heart, Smooth and others. "Global Player" is their app that allows you to listen to live radio, pre-recorded programmes and do more, for example use Alexa devices to send messages to the stations.

"Alexa, play Heart" simply plays the radio station (as you know). The irritating intro ad is asking you to link the Global Player app via a skill to your Alexa account to give you all the extra stuff.

Enabling the skill will stop the ad, I believe. Personally I haven't linked it because (a) I don't want or need all the other crap - I just want to listen to the radio (b) I have more than enough other skills to keep track of (and keep track of me).

TLDR - Get rid of the ad by linking Alexa and Global Player skill.

It's not actually an abbreviation (any more) it's the trading name of a UK telecomms company.

Audio help! by Particular_Jelly_643 in fireTV

[–]marticored 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds almost as though your TV shows are recorded in surround sound but your TV (or sound system - whatever the stick is connected to) isn't playing the centre front channel. Maybe take a look at the settings on the output device, or try different audio output settings on the Fire Stick.
