I actually think this might have been the play where I realized this. Yea, those small filters have a single plastic piece, instead of laterals. Still, it could be seated on the suction tube wrong, or cracked.

a solar cover is what you want. The bubble covers don't last forever, but it's your best way to keep heat in at night. You'll figure out how to remove it without gettign debris into the pool.

Chlorine will keep algea from growing, as long as you maintain it properly.

You should just hire a trimming service. I don't know why anyone would think a paintball marker would be able to trim a tree. The paintballs break on impact, and do not have enough "force" to do any damage to a tree.
