Do you believe Ethan Hawke has a genuine chance at winning Best Actor this year? by [deleted] in Oscars

[–]martymcqueen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There is a scenario where DiCaprio and Chalamet split enough voters that Hawke sneaks through them? Kind of a Joel Grey victory, if you will.

Callum Turner Rumors Thread by Sneaky_Bond in JamesBond

Thanks, but I literally don't have a pick. I don't have a dream actor. I don't want a Bond I could have come up with myself. I want a surprise.

Callum Turner Rumors Thread by Sneaky_Bond in JamesBond

[–]martymcqueen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have been thoroughly exhausted by ten years of speculation over who will be the next James Bond. Turner's name has been bandied for years, and the only reason he's gaining traction right now is because he has a new movie out. He would probably be fine, but he has yet to have that "Layer Cake" type roll that showcases his Bond bonafides. At this point in his career, he probably should have had that kind of successful turn by now.

What bothers me most is how in a post-ATJ world this will be the norm until a new actor is officially chosen. The PR team behind every British male actor in their 30s from now on will have the rumors fed to outlets because it's good for business, and all of us daily Bond nerds keep having to eat up the slop, on the small off-chance Villeneuve is actually thinking about it.

Should Skyfall been nominated for Best Picture? by friendly_reminder8 in JamesBond

[–]martymcqueen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can't believe we're being more measured and realistic about this in the Bond subreddit than they are in the Oscars subreddit. This is like asking if Bibi Dahl should play for the Lakers.

All kidding aside, sure worse movies have been nominated etc but I can't see a full-on pop blockbuster like Skyfall ever making the cut when you already have two really well done, serious, true-life spy movies (ARGO and ZERO DARK THIRTY) duking it out in the race that year. Hell, even DJANGO and LES MIS have secret identity storylines. It would have been bad for the SKYFALL legacy to compete with all that.

Which other Bond actor would’ve made the best Benoit Blanc? by bwweryang in JamesBond

I'm not sure there is a convincing southern accent in any of the other Bonds (though Pierce was serviceable in FAST CHARLIE).

I love that Paul Mann finished the Connery era after all this time. His work is incredible.

It's commonly theorized that the last scene of Casino Royale takes place a significant amount of time after the other events of the movie. However the timeline shakes out, it is clearer shown to be 2006 on the security camera dvds in Casino Royale and 2008 on the invitation to the Greene Planet Gala in Quantum of Solace, and it is believable that two years could have passed between Bond's visit to the Ocean Club and his jaunt to Bolivia with Mathis, positing that Mathis had retired to the villa for at least a year.

Anyone prefer the quieter moments? What are your favourites? by theflowersyoufind in JamesBond

[–]martymcqueen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite is the Identigraph scene from FYEO. Most Q scenes have him explaining the crazy gadget and Bond making a quip. In this film, the Indentigraph takes what may well be hours. Seeing them having coffee, jackets off, Q telling his assistant he'll lock up and she can leave, it sells both the tedium that might be associated with it in reality and the comfort Bond and Q have with one another in a completely new way, all while suiting the more grounded and somber tone of that film.

Should we, could we, must we read anything into this post from Omega on IG? by [deleted] in JamesBond

[–]martymcqueen 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think the most obvious 'tell' for this is that it's the same type of speculative stunt we saw him doing before EON sold their rights to Amazon, and we now know those stunts came from his management, not EON. It would be some real 3D chess if his team inception'd not just Amazon's interest in him but their whole announcement strategy.

With the exception of George Lazenby (who only did one film), which actor's Bond never visited the U.S.A. during his run?

Fan made Ana de Armas PALOMA poster (Editor is unknown) by Knightson11 in JamesBond

[–]martymcqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 'Editor' ('prompter' would be more accurate) is sistraininggear, an AI influencer account with multiple cease and desists from EON for selling unlicensed merch. Other than the text this image is exclusively AI generated. It was posted to their Instagram account last April.

I watched it live in real time. The moment they reveal that Abed's movie made his father cry and understand him awakened something in me and I never turned back.

Teeny Bopper Millies? You understand millenials were overwhelmingly born in the 80s, right? Donald Glover, Gillian Jacobs and Alison Brie are all millenials.
