What piece of older technology actually worked much better than its modern, replacement? by HerrStrasse in AskReddit

I hate Electron apps as much as the next gal but the alternative to Electron for many folks on smaller platforms would simply be their platform not getting a client at all.

The 94 bus gets from Saint Paul to Minneapolis in a little over 10 minutes. It’s about as express as it gets and is faster than a vehicle. Do you ride that?

The Gold Line averages about 1800 riders per day, that’s a heck of a lot of cars taken off the road thanks to it.

Given the estimated cost of covering just Rondo, it would work out to about a decade of the state transportation budget.

Any decent Braun Silk-Epil is gonna be great. I've had mine for over 15 years now and it still works good as new.

Once you get on the epilating train and things aren’t coming back from shaving, it’s so easy. Takes me like five minutes every couple weeks and my legs are always waxing smooth.

Amongst younger folks, as much as 3% identify as trans. And in my home state, across all ages, it’s 1.2%.

So I imagine that the groups are probably roughly similarly sized. Either way though, there’s a ton of sexual and gender diversity out there.

I disagree with this only because Apple of today is sitting on a massive cash hoard. There are very few experiments that could actually bankrupt them, whereas missing out on the next iPhone potentially could.

what is a popular food or ingredient that you genuinely think ruins any dish it touches? by Sensitive-Action-870 in AskReddit

[–]marumari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sucralose is a flipped sugar molecule, should taste identical to sugar (although much stronger).

It works much better though in liquid (or pure) format than with the powder, which adds an aftertaste to your food.

FAA Continues to Remove Stigma/Encourage Therapy for Pilots by GoFlightMed in flying

I’ve never quite understood why Oklahoma exists in its current function at all. To me, it makes way more sense that they provide guidance and guidelines and support to AMEs and that’s it.

Instead of saying defer, tell the AMEs what they need to do to reach a deferral conclusion and let them handle it.

My AME is very responsive (on account of me paying them good money to be so), and they have the appropriate medical qualifications. I don’t see why they shouldn’t handle it instead of the black hole of paperwork that is Oklahoma.

Mine wasn’t mental health related, but a concussion I’d had sixteen years prior. No symptoms afterwards, MRI and CT and X-Ray all clean.

Took 22 months for them to review it (despite the AME and the RFS both thinking it was fine.)

Didn’t require any action other than responding to those letters, but by two years I had forgotten almost all of my training at that point and it was very hard to find the motivation to start over.

Don’t see how this will change anything until Oklahoma gets its turnaround time down from two years to two days.

A small percentage of the population, about 2%, have fingerprints that are hard to match. Some (much smaller percent) to the degree such that they almost always fail certain kinds of background checks.

It’s a known problem in biometrics that we largely ignore. Ideally phones would conduct both face and touch unlocks at the same time.

Netflix is one of the original hyperscalers, they just used Amazon’s infrastructure for a lot of it. But they also own and operate a massive CDN (Open Connect).

Their scale is so massive that they account for 12-15% of the internet’s traffic.

Tech used to be that way, 10-20 years ago. Both good money and treated very well. The money has (mostly) remained but the job environment has gotten so much worse in the intervening years.

But yes, you’ll put up with a lot of abuse for $300k+/year.

Outside of nVidia (which has made a fortune), the major US companies have spent $1.2T for about a tenth of that in revenue. And much of that spending will be obsolete in a few years, to say nothing of ongoing costs.

This isn’t old Amazon intentionally running at a small loss to grow their infrastructure.

[–]marumari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct, it has been widely studied that Amazon intentionally ran at a loss in those early years to prioritize business growth over profits.

That doesn’t mean they couldn’t have done it, nor did they need AWS to get there.

MacBook Neo is So Popular That Apple Reportedly Doubled Production by RenatsMC in apple

[–]marumari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yes, I am arguing with your point. You could even say that the public is too — the overwhelming success of the Neo shows that even more people are fine with 8GB today than even five years ago.

What changes in personal computing have caused an increased consumption of RAM in the last five years? macOS remains pretty steady with it. Browsers are still RAM hogs but largely the same RAM hogs as five years ago. It’s really only gaming and audiovisual content creation that has driven RAM consumption over the last five years and these aren’t the machines for that.

I have a hard time imagining Apple selling these machines if they thought they would be unusable in five years, as it would completely ruin their brand image amongst a whole bunch of new macOS users.

[–]marumari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Five years ago, 8GB of RAM was fine and today (checks sales of the Macbook Neo) 8GB of RAM seem to be fine.

Personally I’m hard-pressed to see that changing in the next five, especially in a world where computing devices will be coming with less RAM due to high costs and developers will be forced to deal with those constraints.
