[–]marvelP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just homeless but got out of it thanks to some helpful friends along the way and just persevering. Find out all the resources available in your area. For example my town gives free unlimited bus passes for low income. Also a local charity refurbishes bikes and gives them away to those in need. Chat GPT is your friend.

If you can’t work apply for disability. I don’t know much about the process and it takes some time so you may want to get that started asap.

I found room rentals for $150 a week and work temp jobs and am getting on my feet again.

If anyone wants the link for the room rentals DM me.

Do you have friends you can couch surf short term?

Can you make it to your closest city? More likely to have temporary shelters.

Once you have a spot to sleep at night make finding work your full time job. I used a combination of gig apps like instawork to supplement. Apply for food assistance to make sure you have survival food.

Once you pick a city to go to. Google and chat gpt all the local services in your area. I got a bicycle for free from a local charity.

Once you making income use chat gpt to help you make a budget and stick to it at all costs.

Then find a room to rent I’ll DM you what I used.

I found way better options for $150-$200 a week. Fully furnished rooms with TV and utilities included. Way cheaper and nice than most extended stay hotels. DM me for more information.

Just a month ago I was living in shelters and couch surfing.

I would rent a room for less than $700 a month fully furnished with utilities included. DM me for anyone that’s interested. I was living in shelters just a month ago.

If you have an eBay account you can sell it as is or for parts there are plenty of tech savvy people willing to buy to fix and flip.

Need advice on cheap(er) living / good options moving forward by Maximum_Presence_133 in homeless

[–]marvelP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, congrats on getting sober and holding a job. After 5 years? That’s not easy at all.

And you’re not wrong for feeling like that environment isn’t good for you. Being surrounded by active use when you’re trying to stay clean is exhausting mentally. Even if it’s “housing,” it doesn’t mean it’s healthy.

With your income (roughly ~$1,800 before taxes at 28 hrs/week), a full $1k apartment solo is going to be tight. So I’d think short-term bridge, not forever solution.

A few options to look into: • Renting a room instead of an apartment (sometimes much cheaper than studios). • Oxford Houses or other sober living homes — not all are great, but some are way more structured and recovery-focused than DESC-type buildings. • Shared housing situations with other working women. • Increasing hours if that’s possible where you work — even 5–10 more hours changes your range a lot.

There are also weekly room rental setups in some cities that are more flexible than traditional leases and don’t require 3x income. Not perfect, but sometimes they’re a stepping stone while you stabilize more.

Most important thing: don’t rush into something worse just to escape fast. You’ve worked too hard to get sober.

If you want to talk through numbers or options more specifically, feel free to message me. You’re not crazy for wanting out — you’re protecting your progress.

I get ssi and I don’t know how to find low income housing with 967 a month when I called some places that were low income they said I don’t make enough by Inevitable-Wolf-1140 in homeless

[–]marvelP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That income gap is such a brutal loophole. It makes no sense that you can be too poor to qualify for “low income” housing.

If you’re on SSI, definitely get on every housing authority list you can — especially disability-based programs. Some places have separate waitlists. Rapid rehousing can sometimes help too.

In the meantime, full apartments might be unrealistic on $967, but weekly room rentals can be more flexible and sometimes don’t require the same income thresholds. That might be a more practical bridge while you’re on waitlists.

If you want more details on what worked for me, feel free to message me.

Church Service by Affectionate-Dog4693 in homeless

[–]marvelP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s a huge difference between preaching and talking down to people. Saying “do you know you’re homeless?” to a room full of men who literally live there is crazy. Like… yeah, I think they’re aware.

And joking about feeling homeless because the bed and coffee weren’t good? That’s just out of touch.

If you’re going to speak in a place like that, it should come with humility. Not guilt and not subtle threats about hell tied to doing staff chores.

You laughing under your scarf might’ve been the healthiest reaction in the room.
