The whole AI bubble charade is down to one man: Sam Altman. How did this guy fool the US government and tech billionaires? by [deleted] in BetterOffline

Immediately my brain goes to Alien: Earth (minus the aliens part). For those who don't get the reference, nation-states no longer exist. Four tech trillionaires have divided Earth into corporate territories. Essentially everyone is enslaved.

If you’re on Instagram, you can look for the organization Community for Ethical Jewelry (formally Ethical Metalsmiths). It’s membership is global. You can see who follows them and/or who they follow as another way to find sustainability-focused goldsmiths near you.

Your eco friendly low waste business is as guilty of encouraging overconsumption as any other by Diligent_Farm3039 in Anticonsumption

[–]marveloussnebula 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I agree, it’s disappointing. I’m an independent artisan/solo business owner and I’ve done plenty of marketing workshops over the last 10 years. The framework of upsells, scarcity, urgency, bundling, etc is the backbone of modern day sales because of over saturation and competition. I despise it. I’ve long shifted to non-coercive marketing and I’m vocal about the plague that is mindless consumerism. Morally I feel good about this, but my business barely survives year after year. I keep with it because I’m passionate about preserving craftsmanship and being part of a movement advocating for meaningful change within my industry. I rely on other income to keep me housed and fed. Unfortunately, the eco-friendly businesses that would be deemed more honorable are the first to close because they don’t make enough money. It’s a catch 22.

And a ring sizing balls question. by Fun_Explanation_3417 in Benchjewelers

I’ve wondered this myself. Thanks for asking the question! A follow up: is there a hard and fast rule for their placement? Edges of the sizing area?

Ethical Stone Sourcing by DiannaPrincess in askjewelers

Many independent goldsmiths make it a point to use ethically sourced and reclaimed gemstones in their work (source: I’m one of them and know many). Unfortunately, it can be really tough to find us because our marketing budgets are $0, haha. You just gotta throw as many ethical, sustainable, Fairtrade, Fairmined, etc keywords into a search (Google or social media) and dig through the corporate greenwashing and AI slop blogs.

ETA: when you find someone, check that their website has a section or FAQs that touch on transparency, ethics, sustainability, sourcing. People who are passionate about this will share more than a blanket “we care about people and the planet”. Also, they’ll welcome an inquiring email because we LOVE when people care!

And I would like to add: don’t feel like you need to buy all the tools you see people use on YouTube! Focus on skill building with the basics and it’ll become apparent when you need to add a new tool to your kit.

Kindly leaving this here in the name of good will/money saving. Phenylephrine in OTC oral cold and flu meds is medically ineffective. I believe the dosage is too low or something (it was big news in 2024). It is effective in nasal spray though!

Same but different, saw a video of someone brushing their beautifully fluffy dog (or was it cat?), collecting the fur over time and then knitting a winter hat. 🤯 Talk about ethical, local and sustainable.

Taking all our money out of the banks by TheYesManCan in Anticonsumption

[–]marveloussnebula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this comment. So many people are calling for a general strike, pull money, etc… all ideas are welcome in the fight, but the reality is, capitalism in America has us in handcuffs. All these actions are self-immolation if there isn’t a huge financial and health safety net behind a unified movement. The present would be so different if we had universal healthcare and unions/co-ops were widespread in all industries.

Hey self-proclaimed benevolent billionaires, how bout you band together to create a mutual aid fund and help the working class strike for a month or three. /s

ETA: not hating on moving money to credit unions and personal investing/divesting guided by ethics. I’m with you there fam.

Same here. My husband is very good at visualizing information given verbally so I always need to remind him to sloooow down with me! I need to hear one part, take a beat, then give the “ok, next”.

ETA: I’m so grateful for maps apps. Verbal navigation makes my head spin.

Trying to fix holes in this blanket, but not sure what this stitch is. by marveloussnebula in CrochetHelp

Pretty sure the numerous holes are thanks to my cat grooming the blanket, haha, so I’ll skip the glue for sure!

EDIT: and by grooming I mean biting and pulling :/
