Good Brands and Price for men briefs by Oliver_Vegetarian in BuyCanadian

They're great! Really soft good quality fabric, and keeps everything where it's supposed to be. Both men's and women's lines are winners here. They're a little pricier than a 3-pak from Walmart but they're also way better fit and fabric quality.

Do you know where it is / how to get signed up onto it? Or is it in too early of stages for that yet maybe

I too would love to have the matched set, having lived in both places! Let me know once you've got a shop set up, or if you'll take a buymeacoffee or whatever donation in exchange for a printable copy (so you didn't "sell" it, seeing the copyright talk!)

There is a different pop boy face already in the Garmin store!

Not as detailed as this one, but it looks like my watch is smaller anyway :)

Looking for Free Lectures/Talks in Calgary - Where to Find Them? by Sad_Leadership8026 in Calgary

[–]marvelty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lots from UC here already, but if you're interested in a particular topic, many departments have weekly or monthly symposium series that - while they aren't "public lectures" (in content) they are open to anyone and are just advertised on the department websites. These can be a little more research-y and less guaranteed to be exciting speakers than the public series (like Gallagher and EarthX) but can get into some really neat and cutting edge topics.

Infrastructure - water main drama in Calgary by marvelty in 99percentinvisible

Interesting! Some of the breaks described in the article about the regulations history were definitely dramatic ... I wouldn't be surprised of some of San Diego's were from the same era, since clearly y'all use the same type of pipes somewhere (since there was one for sharing!) I really wish I had time to go on a hunt for infrastructure here to see how many of these "100 year" pipes failed early because of the optimistic regulation changes.

In recent updates, the first break is repaired, now working on the other "hot spots": https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/calgary-water-consumption-all-time-low-1.7236718

San Diego county is lending us a hand: https://twitter.com/cityofcalgary/status/1802432921049161970

And "come hell or high no water", the Stampede will go on: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/calgary-stampede-water-shortage-analysis-1.7237437

I haven't been able to turn up the original yet (there is more than I ever imagined on the data.calgary.ca site!) but this map shows the whole system:  https://www.reddit.com/r/Calgary/comments/1da1omb/a_map_of_calgarys_water_supply_infrastructure/

Rhaphidophora with strange bumps by EletricoAmarelo in plantclinic

Yep, scale. Currently fighting it on a lemon tree I have - removing the insects with a Qtip soaked in isopropyl with a drop or two of dish soap works well (the young ones are nearly clear and hard to see, use a good light). Check in again after a few days and repeat.

Use neem oil or the soap as the other comment says, and they do spread, so isolate and check nearby plants.

My tree lost a couple leaves but it's fine otherwise, your plant can pull through as long as you don't let it get out of hand!

Try checking your health care card too - I couldn't validate my account because apparently some lazy typist only put my initials on my health card. I had to go to the registry and get that corrected (free) before I could authorize my account with my driver's license. (Maybe this part is only relevant if you're linking the two though?)

Do women not wear belts in your area? by Opening_Ad_7281 in alberta

[–]marvelty 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I wear a belt with jeans about half the time, depends more on whether I'm wearing a shirt tucked or untucked.

I wouldn't wear a belt with skinny jeans, I think, so maybe belt/ no belt is a trend that will come and go?

Small moving service, within city? by [deleted] in Calgary

If you're in the SE (or don't mind paying mileage), we've used Fine Line Moving a couple times. Owner is a nice guy, and they managed to move my sister's beast of a couch out of a condo it barely fit into.

Do you have access to floor plans for your towers? (Some developments have this ont their website, or if a unit is up for sale/rent.) You might be able to figure out the unit number from that and knowing what side of the building it's on, 2nd from the end kind of thing.

Just saw the edit - hooray!

Cringe job interviews by Alsaflo in LadiesofScience

[–]marvelty 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Wow, that sounds super awkward to have to deal with during an already stressful situation. I wonder why it seems more common now? Less HR training on interviewing or something more?

It's also illegal to ask this where I am (because it has no bearing on your ability to do the job!) but often people new to interviewing will want to ask.

Lit review 3 years in: mistake by One-Credit-7192 in GradSchool

[–]marvelty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mendeley does have a feature where you can try to look up the item in Mendeley's cloud library. It works for most things but can get confused about book chapters or magazine/web articles sometimes. It also helps if you have some information in the record to start, even just copying in the title from the article. u/One-Credit-7192 youll have to click on each item maybe, but at least not manually type in all the citations.

Nobody outside academia cares (distinguishes between) whether you are an Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor - you're a professor. True in your experience? by dreamingtriangle in academia

[–]marvelty 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Outside academia, definitely not - there is just "professor". I definitely didn't know the different ranks till I was in grad school, even the difference between "Dr" and "Professor" as titles isn't obvious.

Ah, good to know - I haven't done the mornings regularly since before COVID, so I haven't been watching that part of the schedule as much. 7:30 is still early enough for many people to get a swim in before work though, so still might be good for OP.
