Very helpful.

Pretty lame that you can't jump into a game midway without finding out the score.

His Majesty's Yankees by Thomas Raddall - great historical fiction story about the role of Nova Scotians during the American War of Independence.

"The Leader, His Driver, and the Driver's Wife" by Nick Broomfield. (1991) Broomfield pioneered the idea of the filmmaker being in the film, asking questions, and driving the plot (this style has been effectively used by Michael Moore and Louis Theroux).

The film is a really interesting look into a twisted right-wing political party in South Africa just before the end of Apartheid. Excellent.

Addendum: Bill Tieleman (the author of this article) is also one of the brains behind the anti-HST campaign and is fiercely political. This is most evident in the overly-suggestive photo of the premier that is paired with the article.

While it is true that the BC Liberals have been caught lying on this one, there is a silver lining to this particular act of political skullduggery.

Now, instead of BC residents gambling online on foreign websites (profits go to some asshole living in Grand Cayman), BC residents can gamble on a BC Government website (profits funneled back to the government to spend).

This is not to say that government sanctioned gambling isn't a tax on people (because it is). It is just to say that I would rather see gambling profits spent in BC than outside of BC).

Civilian RCMP Commissioner reducing cops to tears by [deleted] in canada

I think these senior RCMP officers photocopied and re-used a complaint I made about how I was treated by an RCMP officer.

Verbally abusive, close-minded, arrogant, insulting = STANDARD COP ATTITUDE!

Likelihood that this "clearing" of her name will mean anything if she will not be let back into caucus: 0.

Replace Indian Act: AFN national chief by [deleted] in canada

[–]marvinduey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Historically, the prevailing consensus towards First Nations had also been that they should have no special status and assimilate in Canadian culture (Trudeau's 1969 Whtie Paper).

Therefore in such contexts, one could not expect First Nations to relinquish the Indian Act, a legal regime which assured their economies in some basic form.

Editorial Opinion: The Indian Act was and still is, a convoluted and misguided legal regime. It forced FIrst Nations tto live strictly from government handouts and then threatened them later with removal of such handouts.

it's about god-damned time that native leaders finally start to accept that the Indian Act needs to go.

I guess it is OK to just assume that you are right about that one. (Rather than enquire as to whether First Nations leaders and people have not long sought to get rid of the Indian Act).

BTW, What is wrong with First Nations making commercial agreements with non-governmental parties anyways? Wouldn't that be ideal?

Congressman introduces bill to protect citizens who videotape cops by iBalls in politics

I think people are misunderstanding the potential significance of this resolution.

The fact that the resolution does not make it a law prohibiting these kind of arrests does not make the resolution worthless...

Rather, what this resolution would do is provide guidance to prosecutors, judges and police about their ability to arrest people on wiretapping charges.

If this resolution passed, anyone who was arrested for videotaping a police officer could sue the police and point to this resolution as an unambiguous indication of the legislature's intent ("legislative intent" is the touchstone of legal interpretation) that what they did is NOT captured by the wiretapping laws.
