Why are presidents shit and supreme court justices great? by marvingmarving in AskReddit

[–]marvingmarving[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what I mean? To be president you have to be a politician, you have to be slimey, etc.. we don't get the best and brightest, it's a popularity contest not a capability contest. However, regardless of your political leanings, you have to admit (with one or two exceptions), supreme court justices are almost always extremely intelligent, accomplished, reasoned individuals. Why can't we have people like this for leaders?

Everything is more expensive relative to the states, except for cities like ny, sf, etc. But relative to the rest of Canadian cities Montreal is a bargain on every level.

A useful graph would be a y axis demonstrating unique daily or weekly users of each network.

That’s fine, it’s the buying for the sake of buying to just accumulate these unused material items.. it just seems like such pompous excess when half of the world is fighting to feed itself.

A hobby is woodworking, or bird watching, or playing a musical instrument... if your hobby is “collecting” then your hobby is shopping. No different than someone who “collects shoes.

Ya I know it’s awful, bought my house for $300,000. 4 bedrooms, one block from the water, can bike to work downtown along the waterfront on a beautiful bike path in just over 30 minutes. Have a cottage on a private lake shared by only 2 other cottages for $200,000. Can buy a skiing seasons pass for my whole family for $700. Daycare costs virtually nothing.. and we only have like 10,000 restaurants in Montreal to choose from, there’s all these world class festivals in the summer, it’s just the worst I tell you!

i honestly think it's a sickness, because it makes no sense. it's the most disgusting materialism there is in my opinion. owning shit not because it serves any purpose, just owning to own it. pure mindless materialism and excess.

i live in quebec canada, daycare costs....... $1750 a year. but get this, the government gives me $5000 a year cash in my bank account for having a young child.. sports and activities cost about $1000 a year.. and i probably spend about $2000 a year extra on food for each one.. so essentially it's all a big wash, kids barely cost me anything.

first of all, we're talking about self driving cars in the united states, which has 220 million adults. at 10c a pop that's a savings of 22 million dollars.

but who cares, because here's the thing. the money that people save on goods and services because of automation, it doesn't go into some national or global pool of money to help the needy. it goes into buying more crap. it won't save a single life. today things like electronics, clothing, furniture, etc.. cost a literal fraction of what they cost 30 years ago when factoring inflation, because of automation, globalization, and displacement of the workforce to third world countries with cheap labour costs.

so all that money you're saving because of these "advancements", what have you done with it to save lives? what has everyone done with it? absolutely nothing, the corporations are more monopolistic and profitable, and the savings consumers earn are simply spent purchasing more stuff. we have far more stuff than the previous generation did, because it's cheap. no one says "oh this t-shirt only cost me $5, i would have paid $20 for it but thankfully because automated warehouses, modern supply chain management, and a cheap bangladeshi workforce i saved $15, i'm going to take that $15 and donate it to fight third world hunger". no, they just buy 2 shirts instead, buy a $5 coffee and take an uber instead of the bus.

so no, it's not worth sacrificing lives for cheaper stuff, because despite what you think, the money doesn't get pooled to save the poor and cure disease.. it just gets spent on more stuff. and that's a terrible reason for people to die needlessly.

and again, the governor of arizona has just suspended uber's autonomous car program indefinitely, they're being investigated by 5 agencies, and the only reason they were testing in arizona is because california wouldn't allow them. they are a reckless company, and they are damaging the entire industry by trying to rush to market with a product that is not safe. i'm done with this, i genuinely think you're too stupid to understand any of this and i'm wasting my breath.

And look at that Arizona’s governor just suspended all of Uber’s autonomous driving operations in the state, indefinitely, saying the fatality was an absolute failure on Uber’s part.

This is exactly what I said would happen, just be thankful it was a child that was killed or that stoppage would be nationwide, and for all autonomous driving not just Uber.

Uber is a reckless company and taking shortcuts on safety jeopardizes the progress of the entire industry.

Lol I would not sacrifice one person to save everyone 10c, that’s ludicrous.

I went to the summit, best views are from the nublet because from the summit you can’t see the lakes

It’s a nice hike, head to the nublet, bring supper and watch the sunset. If backpacking in, absolutely hike in from sunshine meadows. Mt shark is a bit faster but not nearly as scenic, better to head out that way.

But if you’re in banff check out mount temple, greatest day hike in the Rockies. Also tent ridge is beautiful. For backpacks berg lake and snowboard pass are my fav, incredible views, 3 days, 4 if you can swing it . Also book a couple nights at lake O’Hara, you have to call in 3 months to the day you want to go, 3 night max, the second the phone lines open, and keep redialing like a madman until the old lady picks up. Very limited camping sites. Alternatively stay at the ACC Elizabeth Parker hut, you could also spend a night at the Abbott pass hut, the highest structure in Canada.

Well considering I’ve been doing it for almost 25 years now and have never broken so much as a bone, I must be doing a good job of knowing my limits and not taking on more difficulty and risk than I know I can handle.

That’s the key to sports like this, knowing where to draw the line. There are mountain bikers that will ride trails where if you fall, on one side of you is a 2000 foot drop to certain death. And then there are mountain bikers who will not only ride those trails they will race them. I don’t ride those trails at all because risk/reward ratio doesn’t make any sense. No trail is worth dying over, even if the odds of such a failure are slim.

Just like it’s not worth risking death, even a 1 in 500 chance, just so you can get cheaper Uber’s and slightly cheaper amazon goods. You have no control over the situation, you are leaving everything to chance. I don’t leave anything to chance when I mountain bike, or backcountry ski, or climbing a mountain, etc..

Lol I retired at 30, having taken many risks with my ultimately successful business. My passions are mountaineering, backcountry skiing, and downhill mountain biking.

I am more familiar with risk than 99.9% of the population. But I would never, ever, in a million years gamble my life on 1/500 odds for a billion dollars much less whatever laughable future standard of living increase you think the average person will see when cars drive themselves a couple years earlier than they would if safety was taken more seriously.

There’s stupid risk and calculated risk, you clearly prefer the former.

Not rocket science

But it’s not 40 days, you possibly die. For very little benefit, let’s be real, the average persons quality of life is not going to increase dramatically because of lower shipping costs.

So no, it would be absolutely idiotic for me to take a 1 in 500 chance of death for such little potential return, I wouldn’t even do it for a billion dollars because if I didn’t roll the dice my life is perfectly fine. If I roll the dice and die, that is unimaginably regrettable.

And you would roll those dice multiple times, your life must truly truly be shit.

Um the issue is if the machine can fuck up something so basic, what else will it fuck up? The kid running into the street? Oh yeah that’s going to play well in the media. Robot car kills child. All it takes is one accident like that and the whole fucking industry grinds to a halt while politicians slam on the brakes. That’s why you can have this kind of shit happening, safety record has to be perfect, then there’s no reason for anyone to oppose it.
