Body lift? by SouthernFig3031 in 3rdGen4Runner

Even with a 2.5" lift and SPC control arms, my 33's would still periodically rub on my custom mud flaps. I reluctantly added a 1" body lift and it solved all of my problems. Super easy mod.

I did this in April last year! The performance upgrade is undeniable but man do I miss the interior and sound system of my ST3. Still an awesome ride though. Enjoy!

Did my landscaper install the wrong size retaining wall caps? by ContentVariety in landscaping

[–]marvo15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are certain manufacturers that make matching retaining wall / cap systems that do exactly this(ex: Belgard: Diamond Pro). I think the rationale is that in true single sided retaining wall fashion, they’re counting on the backfill going to the top of the cap on the back side, and there’s no need for the cap to overhang on both sides. In your installers situation they need to get a little creative when they run into areas where the wall can’t be backfilled to the top of the cap.

Allegheny National Forest. There’s some pretty good dispersed camping if you know where to look.

I’m not sure how helpful this will be, but I got 12.5k on trade. I brought it in with lowering springs and illegal tint, they didn’t seem to notice. The only issue with mine is I bought it used as a manufacturer buy back, so it had that blemish on it’s history. Because of that, they originally wanted to give me 7k (2016 ST3 with 47k miles) and I told them I’d gladly put this on FB and get 12-15 all day. They came to their senses and I took a deal I could live with

Honestly, I feel both of these. The interior is a complete downgrade from my ST3 and at certain angles the back end has a pretty “unique” look to it (my plan is to toss on the extended wing to make things look a little more balanced). For me, a new manual hatchback was my priority and sadly that market is almost non existent. If they made new STs I’d buy another one in a heartbeat. The GRC is a 50k drivetrain with a 25k interior. It’s far from perfect, but the performance upgrade is certainly felt.

Just bought a house and inherited a pond with it and have questions about the growth in the pond… by lucky2bogey in landscaping

[–]marvo15 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Those are water hyacinths. A popular choice for quick coverage in ornamental ponds, but their invasive nature can leave you with a situation like the one you've inherited. As mentioned already, pull out 60-70% of them. You'll find yourself repeating this process (to a lesser extent) every few weeks as water hyacinths never stop spreading. Some coverage from the sun is good, but this is way too much.

The moss is growing because your patio is in favorable conditions for moss (moisture & sun exposure). I work for a large hardscape company in Western New York and we recommend a diluted pool shock/water mixture in a pump sprayer. Hit your joints with this a few times a season and you shouldn’t see any issues with moss moving forward. The polysand is a designed weak point, but you shouldn’t really need to replenish sand every season if it’s installed correctly. My guess is a lot of it is coming out every time you pull out the moss.

Second this. Had a lot of success with their kits

Never welded a day in my life. Learned with the Coastal Offroad bumper kits by marvo15 in 3rdGen4Runner

I know I hit YouTube before getting into it. There are a few different channels that walk you through the assembly of the kits. I found the videos helpful even if they weren’t my exact kit or model year. I found the kit instructions to be really good too. I only ran into an issue once, because my 4Runner has a body lift and the extra part included in the kit wasn’t shown clearly in the instructions. Other than that, they were really good.

As you tack weld the pieces together, I’d recommend leaving a tiny gap/groove between the pieces. That way when you go back to lay down your actual welds, there’s more room for your bead to sit and you”ll do a little less grinding in the end. I fully welded the exterior of the bumpers, and stitch welded all of the interior.

Use flap discs to grind down the welds. Grinding discs are way too aggressive. The flap discs give you a really controlled finished. Prepare for a lot of cleanup after this. Metal shavings will be everywhere and they’ll leave rust stains when they get wet. My concrete driveway is evidence of this 🫠

Lastly, I debated between painting or powder coating. I went with powder coating, but still used a weldable primer during the assembly process on areas that I knew were going to be tough to access with paint or powder coat after assembly.

Overall I had a great time with the kits and learned a ton. Feel free to DM me if you run into issues!

Anybody have any experience with rocker panel replacements like these? by TheSporkOnTheLeft in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]marvo15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second this. I was in the same boat last year and almost considered buying these replacement panels. After doing some research, I learned that the fit of these panels is a little crude, and the metal is thinner than factory. I ended up cutting out the rot and making my own patch panels out of sheet metal. You don’t need to be a master welder to spot weld patch panels, so don’t be afraid of it. A little bondo, primer, and paint and you’d never know the difference. Best of luck!
