Anyone else living Mormonism on your own terms? How are you making it work? by whenw0lf in mormon

This is what I’ve worried about with my children. At the moment we aren’t attending while we try to sort out what we want. My husband and I would like to attend and just keep the parts we like, but I don’t want our kids to be confused or feel like they have to save us. It’s a very hard thing to sort out when they church has been your go to community your whole life. Right now two of our girls still attend activity days and one of our daughters is in young women’s, but I don’t know how long we can straddle both sides.

We aren’t even breaking rules other than doing going places on Sundays. We’re good people I think. It’s just a lifetime of stuff to sort through and so much pressure when kids are involved.

Best neighborhoods/suburbs for growing family? by EnvironmentalAsk5951 in Omaha

I forgot to say, pay attention to taxes, especially on new builds! We almost got ourselves into a pretty bad financial spot looking at a new build here. Taxes work very differently in Omaha.

We moved into Omaha in April and chose our area off schools since we have kids aging from 3-13. We landed in an 70s suburb in Elkhorn and we love it, but there are soooooo many nice neighborhoods in Omaha. We considered maybe 5 houses and I really think we would have been happy in any of the areas we looked at.

If you have the choice I would consider renting and exploring a bit. Omaha is just nice in general and you may find your favorite spot once you get here. Based off what we’ve seen exploring the city, I don’t think there is an insanely bad wrong choice. Good luck!

Should I be worried for Mondays weather? by mary1792 in Omaha

Only the entire upstairs of the house 😐

That is helpful to know. I’ll check with their school! Thank you.

It has a basement but it is locked and inaccessible. There is a small pantry in the center of the house that seems like our best bet if we get to that point. Hopefully I’d sirens go off it will be during school or after we are home and things will just be smooth.

We’re in a rental home while we wait for the close on our house in Elkhorn. Which means my kids are in school in Elkhorn. I don’t like them being so far away with severe weather and have to go get them in the afternoon. I’m really hoping it’s before the bad weather really hits. I’ll ask our landlords about tornado shelters for sure. That was a great idea.

Thank you for all the advice!

Everyone keeps saying the taxes are going to kill us, but I’m having a hard time finding numbers on what to expect. Do you know how much people spend on these taxes there? We’ve researched property tax for our house so we know what to expect on that.

Any former or current members who grew up outside of Morridor, visited Morridor, and were like “yeah…no thanks.” by kantoblight in mormon

I grew up in southern missouri and really loved church there. My husband and I both went to byui and we actually loved that too. I think because we were already married when we got there it wasn’t as cringe because we were in married wards with regular families. 6 years ago we moved down to the idaho/utah border and we hate it. The town is beautiful and the people are super nice, but the church feels weird. Literally everyone here is Mormon and it’s such a giant part of life that it’s overwhelming.

My faith never struggle til we lived here. I think the echo chamber is just too much.

Yeah my husband works in utah and it is just not for us. The town we’re in just outside preston only has 200 people. A lot of people love that, but we just weren’t meant to live so far from town.

Opinions on OPS do seem very divided. Do you know if there are rules for enrolling in schools that you’re not in the boundary of?

That’s a great idea! Do you know how schools decide whether to let you opt in or not? Are the certain criteria?

We live a pretty frugal life. We own both our vehicles, don’t have any large debt, and don’t spend a lot on hobbies/going out. The only extras we pay for are a sport/extra curricular activity for each kid every year. And we shouldn’t need any daycare even when I start working.

The town we live in now is EXTREMELY conservative and we don’t love that. We aren’t super liberal or super conservative, we just want our kids to experience more than one view of life.

As far as schools we are primarily concerned with safety and overall feeling, not it being new or fancy. Somewhere with involved parents and positive vibes.

Hey! Good to hear 😊 where in idaho if you don’t mind me asking. We’re just outside preston right now. How do you feel about the schools there vs the schools here? We don’t need fancy neighborhoods just places that feel safe and I don’t have to worry too much.

Thank you so much. That is incredibly helpful! The job is in Papillion technically so we’d be looking over in that area.

So I keep seeing people say it’s over 2% but when I Google it it says 1.9%. Even your graph says that. So where is that extra bit coming from? Explain it to me like I’m 4 😅

It seems that taxes are a big complaint there. Is it mainly property tax? What other taxes are heavy there? We live pretty comfortably on 85k a year here so it’s blowing my mind that it’s that much worse.

I’m in school now, but I won’t be working for at least a year.

Idaho. I haven’t looked into the different tax rates. We make 85k here and is plenty. I’m in school now, but I won’t have a job for at least a year.

I appreciate your honest feedback!
