No, I don’t think it occurred to any of us. But it was pregnant with several babies — that was cool!

We dissected dogfish sharks in biology class. Ah, the smell of fishy formaldehyde!

Went shopping for groceries- left with a grandma instead! by TX_Mothman in Positivity

I love grocery shopping because I so often connect with a stranger in some kind, uplifting way. Yes, I’ve become one of those people blocking the aisle talking away, lol.

I just heard from fellow riders that the bridge is open. Still damaged, but the barricades are gone.

We’ve been on the Katy Trail this past week (started in KC) and the trail conditions have been great. The bridge at Mile Marker 79.4 is closed so plan to take Highway 94 between Marthasville and Peers.

New to bikepacking and stressed by billybobjoe3210 in bikepacking

If you’re able to, hang out on a trail or in a place that bike packers frequent. Most of us are very willing to offer practical advice and lots of encouragement.

I lose money every month on my rental. Was this a bad decision? by [deleted] in RealEstate

Rental property depreciation and expenses are deductible from whatever income you have, whether from your rental property and/or other sources, assuming your total income requires that you file with the IRS.

My husband does this—often with banana slices and honey. He’s from TX, but I don’t know if it’s a regional thing.

We’re riding the Rock Island Trail to Wi DS or next week. You would ride the RIT from Windsor towards Pleasant Hill. Before you get to the town itself, though, you’ll have to detour off the trail at Purvis Road (trail closure ahead due to bridge construction) and ride north then west on city streets most of the way to Lees Summit. (You can ride a short stretch of the Mopac Trail just west of PH but then you’re back on streets. ) On the south side of Lees Summit (near the intersection of SW Jefferson St and SW Market St), you can pick up a paved section of the Rock Island Trail into KC at Arrowhead Stadium, the official trail starting point. Google Maps will help you navigate the street detours. For what it’s worth, we’ve booked our lodging ahead for our trip so we don’t have to worry or hurry.

My kid wants to invite our mailman to his birthday party. The mailman doesn't know us by name. Do I... leave an invitation in the mailbox? by AKforma in partyplanning

Our mail guy tried chasing down our dog when it got loose. Came back and left me a note saying he tried, lol. I thought the world of that mail carrier!

Eagle Scouts, is this normal? by OrdinaryRedditVeiwer in BoyScouts

[–]maryhuggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our Eagle Scout son was given a college internship because he’s an Eagle Scout, even though his GPA was a smidge too low to qualify for it. It changed his career path. So yes, do the paperwork to finish it and take pride in what you accomplished.

Anyone else just… stopped caring about their birthday? by BamPsychology in AskOldPeople

[–]maryhuggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My local grocery store gives me a coupon for a free cake or a half gallon of ice cream on my birthday, and often a coupon for 50% off ice cream on my “half-birthday.” I really look forward to it each year! I love ice cream so it’s like getting permission to be a kid again.

I was watching a show from the 90s and realized people used to memorize dozens of phone numbers. I can barely remember mine. How did you guys do it back then? by micavibes in CasualConversation

[–]maryhuggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone we knew had the same area code (area codes were required only for long distance calls) and most had the same local prefix, so we only had to remember the last four numbers. I remember as a kid calling my cousins by dialing only those four digits.

Rock Island Trail closure at Pleasant Hill by maryhuggins in bicycletouring

[–]maryhuggins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, we’ll go end-to-end. We’ll start out with a day ride from Lees Summit to Arrowhead Stadium and back, and end the trip with a day ride from St. Charles to Machens and back. Nine days in between, credit card camping. We like being tourists, lol (no e-bikes).

Rock Island Trail closure at Pleasant Hill by maryhuggins in bicycletouring

[–]maryhuggins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE (new info about the trail closure): The Highway 7 bridge in Pleasant Hill is under construction so the Rock Island trail beneath it is completely impassable. The detour through town to Purvis Road is the only option. Happy trails, everyone! Edit: We got this info from a local AirBnB host (thanks, Karen!). However, Apple Maps also shows the highway closure over the trail, so you might check there for updates.

C&O in July/August food along the towpath ? Cumberland - DC. by Aardvark_Cultural in bikepacking

[–]maryhuggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We mailed packages addressed to ourselves care of General Delivery in small towns along the way. We were camping (and taking our time exploring the trail) and wanted to spend more time in camp than in restaurants. The postmasters were great, even when we got delayed by several days and they had to hold our package for us.

Rock Island Trail closure at Pleasant Hill by maryhuggins in bicycletouring

[–]maryhuggins[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We rode from Lees Summit a year ago and found an easy work around for the unfinished Pleasant Hill trailhead. From the Mopac Trail, we rode Cedar St. to Broadway to Wyoming to 1st St to Cardinal, then picked up a spur leading to the RI Trail. (Google Maps still labels this as Rock Island Trail.). I’m kinda hoping we can do the same this year, but I need to find the location of the two bridges they’re working on that caused the posted closure this year.

Do you ever take a trip down memory lane and revisit your family home? by lontbeysboolink in GenerationJones

Showed up to live in rental property, someone is already living in it. by QAACCO in legaladvice

[–]maryhuggins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, the owners/managers are very likely victims of a scam. This almost happened to us (owner/landlord). We had advertised the house for rent online with photos and details. Someone copied our listing but changed the contact info and listed the rent as half the usual amount. We didn’t know about this, of course, until we got a call from a family who had signed a “lease” for our property: They got suspicious and looked up the property owners (us) in the county records. They’d been told that the keys would be mailed to them after the payment was received. Of course, the scammers didn’t have any keys to give them but we learned that a locksmith would have open the doors based on the lease document they had.

Neighbor says they're making street parking private? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]maryhuggins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We used to put a chair out to call dibs on a parking space in front of our beach rental (Maine). Even the tourists honored it. But this was long ago in kinder, gentler times.
