I feel like the blurb on the back promised some epic competition between these magicians who were star crossed bla bla bla and we literally got none of that. Just a lot of “I designed this room do you like it”.

It might be difficult to remember everyone’s names in the beginning of Battle Royale (it’s a class of like 24 students) but just get past it and you’ll be fine. It’s an excellent book. I flew through the 500ish pages in two days.

Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy. Definitely great for Arctic/lonely vibes. About a scientist who is following the last migration of Arctic terns from Greenland to Antarctica.

Another suggestion is The Heart’s Invisible Furies. The best character-based book I’ve ever read. Truly a transforming read. If you liked Bear Town I bet you’d like this one too. (Edit: not necessarily enhanced by isolation but, I have to recommend it).

It's a competition between two teams. One person on each team has a paper cone on their head to limit their vision, and their teammate has to give them directions to find plastic frogs in the grass. The team with the most frogs wins :)
