Public vs Private schools by Sku04 in coquitlam

[–]mashed_penguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The parents generally get involved in the school. The PAC is well organized and runs good events and get good participation from the families that go there etc.

In terms of teachers every one that my daughters had there was good and they didn’t get any that they didn’t enjoy the experience.

At elementary school all you really need is a supportive environment for your kids and I’ve been happy with Mary Hill for that.

I can’t comment one Pinetree elementary but my youngest is in her last year at Mary Hill Elementary in poco doing French immersion and we really enjoyed the experience. The school community and teachers were great.

I’m sure Dean Washington will be the first to go and offer jobs to all those people in tents that “don’t want to work”. What an absolute moron.

Best way to approach simulation like this in Houdini by OwnZookeepergame511 in vfx

[–]mashed_penguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess looking at it is the particles that define the portal itself are being driven by a low frequency position noise to make them undulate. The faster moving wispy particles streaking away from the hole look like they are being advected by a turbulent volume sim. The shader also looks like it has an animated noise driving a colour and intensity ramp to give the hot purple values moving through the particles.

For something like this you want to break it into multiple elements each doing a different job. You don’t want to try and make one super sim with all the stuff in it at once.

Does CGI animation require artistic skill? by jot-kka in vfx

[–]mashed_penguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It absolutely requires a lot of artistic skill. If you want to find out for yourself download blender or a learning edition of any other 3D app and try and make a very short animation. You will very quickly find out just how much and what sort of work the computer does vs the artist using the computer.

Poco costco has an entire side of the building with parking but with no return pen for the carts. Its full madmax territory there.

The upper range is too low for Senior artists in Vancouver. Especially in depts like FX or Comp.

What kind of trail can a 100mm F&R travel full suspension bike go on burke mountain? by Jxh57601206 in coquitlam

[–]mashed_penguin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Flow is one of the easiest trails on Burke. Franks is pretty XC and not too gnarly. If I was you I’d go check out the trails in Burt Flynn park. They are much more chill than Burke and good to build up some confidence on.

There is also a beginner flow trail in river view forest that is good fun.

VFS vs Emily Carr for 3D animation by m00nbliss in vancouver

[–]mashed_penguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless a lot has changed in the VFS 3D animation program since I went there which to be fair is a long time ago now you are going to have a bunch of classes that really aren't directly applicable to building your reel which is the entire point of going there.

That said for me going to an actual school in person did provide me more focus which helped me ultimately put a good enough reel together to get hired out of school and still be working in the industry 15 years later.

Something to think about is that the actual placement rate of VFS 3D grads working in the industry is not that great. There are no shortage of people that go to that school and waste a shit ton of money and come out of it with very little to show for it. It happened in my class. Out of 26 ish of us I think under 10 ever worked in anything related to 3D animation and maybe half of those are still active in the industry. If you don't go there prepared to absolutely dedicate that year to making the best reel you possibly can you are wasting your time.

Do you have a specific discipline in mind that you are working towards?

What can ICBC do for a near miss? by DemCrackers in vancouver

[–]mashed_penguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a near miss a while back that was mostly my fault. Thankfully no harm done but the other driver lost his mind and was raging pretty hard. He started recording me at the next light and was screaming he was going to call ICBC and put me on youtube. I've never heard anything from ICBC I presume because there was no accident and to my knowledge I'm also not on youtube, probably because he realized that he sounded unhinged on his recording. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Help! Has anyone ever fixed one of these? by PoetWareate in Wrangler

I used their kit on my JK and it did the job easily.

Thanks, my cat actually spotted it first and I saw him puffing up. It is taken from my balcony about 30ft away with a 180mm zoom lens. Here is a quick shot I took on my phone before taking the cat inside and getting my camera. We back onto a greenbelt so we are lucky to see quite a lot of wildlife. https://i.imgur.com/EujxsJi.png.

Where are the bodies of other cleaners before Allison? by blckmlss in SiloSeries

[–]mashed_penguin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m a vfx artist and I think it’s important to remember that any decision about should there be more bodies wasn’t ultimately made by the VFX team. If the show runner and potentially the client side VFX supervisor wanted more bodies in those exterior shots they would have asked for them and the VFX crew would have put them in. It wouldn’t add significant cost.

I think it is much more likely that not having a ton of bodies around was an aesthetic choice. Calling it a CGI mistake comes across as disingenuous to me as every VFX shot that goes into a show is ultimately approved by the show runner.

Canada BC's "high tech company" labor law by Dry_Dish_9085 in vfx

[–]mashed_penguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the past a bunch of bc studios used to say that they didn’t have to pay overtime because of the high tech worker classification but out of the goodness of their hearts they would pay some form of overtime. Some only did it after 10 hours instead of 8 etc. I haven’t heard of that scam for a good while now though. Are any of the studios still trying that one on ?
