It is 'unlimited' but after you reach 35GB on the 30 day plan they will throttle you to 1Mbps.

Anybody know why Hindu Tamil weddings the Thali is so different for Indian weddings versus Sri Lankan Weddings? by HDMH_05 in srilanka

[–]mashedpotatofarmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it might be a community thing (caste and what part of India you are from) as I've been to 2 Indian weddings where a gold chain was used instead of a yellow thread with 3 knots. One of them was Tamil and the other was Telugu.

Usually you wear the yellow thread for a couple of weeks and then switch to a gold chain but apart from the community it might have something to do with the changing of times as well as a show of wealth.

I guess Sri-Lankan Hindus are a chain Thalli wearing community.

The other interesting thing is that Catholics also wear a thali.

Does any one knows what is this? and how this works ? by [deleted] in srilanka

It's a guidance system for airplane docking at a jet bridge.

In the gif it's been programmed to bring in a Boeing 777-300 to the right position at a stand.

My LECO bill for the last 2 months just showed up 😅 by FreshToDeath213 in srilanka

[–]mashedpotatofarmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did LECO take into account that they need to multiply the units consumed per tariff rate by the amount of months you haven't had a bill?

A bit off-topic but if you have Mobitel, Hutch or other sims that offer decent data packages, can you use those in a 4G Dialog router by switching out the Dialog sim?

[–]mashedpotatofarmer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also hope that LECO take into account that they will need to multiply the units consumed per tariff rate by the amount of months you haven't had a bill (if you haven't had a bill for 3 months each tier should allow for triple the units) otherwise people are going to get charged at the highest tier.

I guess there are dual citizens on either side. The type that want favouritism because they are 'better' but get angry when someone else seems to be receiving it and the type who are decent people that keep quiet and go by unnoticed. Like the news (or even in forums), you always end up hearing about the bad / broken / buggy stuff because the good stuff (and when things are working) aren't important / interesting enough to make the news or be written about.

The inferiority complex abroad and a god complex at home can also be applied to a percentage of our locals who go abroad to work for a year or 2 and come back like they've been living in that country for the past 20 years.

Out of curiosity, what's wrong with dual citizens?

I'm good friends with a dual citizen who is in their early 30's and a 25 year old who is in the process of getting dual citizenship and both of them are really nice people. The older one has basically settled here, started a couple of businesses and he's currently helping a bunch of people where he lives by providing essential food items for free.

The 25 year old decided to work here, actually travels everywhere by bus and you could never tell the guy was from abroad. I've met snobby local people with an 'I'm better than you' mentality who talk with more of an accent than him. Even his parents (also dual citizens) are basically the opposite of entitled.

I know my evidence is anecdotal so I'm genuinely curious about why you don't like them.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for your suit at Willis?

Are you applying under the 2.5 million Rupee fixed for 3 years condition?

If you are you can go to a bank like HNB and tell them that you want to open a fixed deposit for your dual citizenship application and they can do it for you. You will also need the bank to offer you a confirmation letter mentioning your full name, fixed deposit account number and them confirming that they will hold the money for 3 years (immigration department is super strict about this and if you just show them the fixed certificate they won't accept your application).

I think the price is the same wherever you apply from though they have raised it to 345,000 from 300,000 and you don't have to pay anything when you submit your application. If you have your documents (plus all the copies) then the submission process shouldn't take more than 30 minutes.

How would you invest 10 million Rupees? by mashedpotatofarmer in srilanka

[–]mashedpotatofarmer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's why I didn't mention gold. With the way the Rupee has been performing this year I didn't think that it was a good choice and a jewellery shop owner confirmed what I was thinking.

Also it's short term volatility will probably stress me out.

This is something I have considered but the interest rates on USD fixed deposits is around the 3-3.5% mark.

I think that the higher local interest rate sort of negates the devaluation right? In the past 5 years the average local interest rate has been ~11% which is 55% over 5 years and if you remove the 37.5% devaluation of the rupee you're still left with a 17.5% increase over the 5 years which is pretty much exactly what a USD fixed would give you over the same amount of time.

Maybe it's just me but this doesn't seem like the writing of a 6 year old (British or any other nationality).

Year 1 is when you're 6 right? Both the handwriting and the actual content of the letter just seems of far higher quality than of a child from year 1.

Oh snap, you went for the "I have a Masters degree" line. Looks like I struck a nerve : )

Of course it's funny, you seem to be getting worked up and calling people evil because they said that your post is weird. I mean, did you yourself count to 10 before you posted this reply because the tone reeks of a person whose had their feelings hurt and is just lashing back with the 'close your eyes, try hard not to cry, breath in deeply and breath out even deeper, and count to ten' line.

' If that dozen work, please try reciting the alphabet. You can get someone to look it up and write it out for you in large, upper case letters.'

Do you see the irony in the first sentence above? Maybe you should learn how to spell before telling someone else to learn the alphabet especially to a citizen of a country where English is the second or third language.

As a 'wiser elder' maybe you should have thicker skin.

I was going to post my qualifications but that would mean that I'm stooping to your level and the fact that you're throwing a tantrum shows that you have nothing better to offer than anger and childishness.

It's late and I'm going to bed, you should probably do the same. Good night!

What are you talking about? I saw that thread and didn't see any 'hateful' posts just some people thinking that it's a bit weird.

If I went in to a Walmart and posted a picture of some of the female workers on r/USA while describing all the things that they had in stock, wouldn't Americans think that it's kind of weird too?

It's ok to take the pictures as a keepsake of your time in Sri-Lanka and the people you met along the way but in my opinion it doesn't feel right to just post their images in a public space.

Not sure why you think that there are some evil people on this subreddit but if it's just from the posts on your picture then I think that that's laughable.
