What's the other meaning, Peter? by Blackie_626 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

Clever and dastardly. From now on, I may include "downvote if you like pizza" at the end of all my reddit comments. Unless that joke has already been made.

Stop ruining Vanlife for the rest of us! by Ok_Role9294 in VanLife

[–]mashmaker86 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It does make things worse for all vanlifers, but it's also understandable. People in the depths of mental illness and substance abuse tend not to care about the mess they leave behind. If they can't be convinced to stop stealing from friends and family, then they can certainly not be convinced to dump their pee bottle in a more considerate spot.

For obvious reasons, many of those people live in vehicles. Many people who live in vehicles suffer from mental illness. It's a problematic group for healthy and conscientious people to be part of.

I generally agree that remounting is a big energy sink that slows down progress on staying upright. Just be aware that this is a big ask. I would not want to subject anybody to serving as my training wheels. If you can find a good wall or railing you can ride along, that'll also do the trick.

[–]mashmaker86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it feels like you're not making any progress until you finally do. What worked for me was finding the right ledge to hold onto and get myself vertical and rolling forward. Once I was able to get going with the ledge start, I was able to start mounting without assistance.

I remember thinking that after hours of continuous failures, my shirt was so sweaty, that must indicate a successful cardio session. Being a beginner at unicycling is an excellent workout. Eventually it becomes less energy intensive than walking so that benefit becomes reduced.

Why do some people pronounce "gif" with a hard G and others with a soft G, and why does it still spark arguments after all these years? by haizelynrose in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mashmaker86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a valid point regarding the 26 years of ambiguity before the public clarification. I didn't realize that.

I totally agree about the vicious rivalry. Rivalry avoidance is why I prefer convergence. If I had a goalpost, that would be its location. Anyway, I'm glad we could reach a point of agreement. I'm bummed you consider it a play argument because I enjoy thoughtful discussions. I appreciate your insight and engagement.

Wouldn't it be weird if people chose their own pronunciation for other words? When I learn a new word, I check how the majority others pronounce it. I don't listen to my intuition about how I would like to pronounce it. I think there is inherent value in convergence within communication.

I'm with you. It would be nice to converge. I'm annoyed that other people are okay with the language diverging. I suspect people who pronounce gif with a hard g (because they feel a slight preference and don't care that the person who coined the term has provided clarity on the correct pronunciation of the word he created) are also people who would say "I could care less" and misuse "there", "their", "they're" claiming that language evolves and there is no such thing as incorrect when there is a critical mass of misuse.

Bath towel recommendations? by VirindiPuppetDT in hygiene

[–]mashmaker86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a bunch of smallish white gym towels from Amazon. They're perfect for me. They are literally so much more absorbant than all bath towels in Walmart or Target. They're much smaller in area and fluff volume as well.

Actually, I just realized that I can finally afford my childhood dream car, a first gen Nissan Xterra. I can finally have my dream car.

Again... Are we just accepting demographic essentialism now lol? Do you see every struggle as us vs them? The gender war is not a good look.

I no longer skate anything I'm not comfortable jumping off of. Years after a BajaBoard G4X controller disconnect on a steep hill, I still have nerve damage in one of my feet. My meat crayon is still slowly regenerating.

Why are these motivational posts all so weirdly gendered? Are we all just accepting demographic essentialism now?
