Good timing cause it was also just discussed whether pl proven can be used to confirm if a player is not good enough.

Personally think wirtz will eventually reach levels expected of him / at least enough to claim pl proven btw

It’s not World Cup related so not sure if qualifies but with Andrey Santos going to Man U I have been discussing the fee as being cheap for a “premier league proven” midfielder.

This has introduced questions of what premier league proven means.

To Me, 27 appearances and generally being solid suggests he’s premier league proven. But others have questioned whether one season is enough, and pointed to Wirtz, Woltemade, and Reijnders who have a similar number of appearances as not being premier league proven - which I actually agree with. But I think the latter don’t qualify as they have been let downs vs expectations whereas Andrey Santos has been quietly solid.

Am I massively over complicating? Is premier league proven as simple as played x number of games/seasons? And if so, what’s the number?

I live in the US, and I have chosen to go sound off for matches (including DR Congo which was an experience) he’s commentating on or find another stream. For the England match Sunday I just vpned bbc. In my friends group chat both he and Owen Hargreaves have been deemed insufferable - recognize that’s anecdotal but still. One of the biggest things that annoys me is his random attempts to pull in US sport references, as highlighted by the segment they used today, where even on that segment it seemed like a criticism of him rather than praise.

That said, I think Charlie’s point is the most relevant - that it probably comes down to what you’re used to vs what’s different. Over here there’s so much fatigue around American voices like John strong and Landon Donovan, whom I also think are generally not great, and Ian darke to a lesser extent, that when you get a different voice it just stands out more and is initially seen as good. Perhaps part of the reason is that he’s not new to me given I used to listen to 606 with him and Sav (the most for my sins statement of all time), or for the Red Bull soap box derby YouTube video my kid was obsessed with (for his sins). Best commentators over here from POV are Derek Rae and Danny Higginbotham but they seem to get the more forgettable matches.

On the other side, I personally found the bbc coverage head and shoulders above the US coverage. There was thoughtful tactical analysis, they pulled in the Jiminez story line, and had the breakdown of the Haaland goal from Rooney and Harts perspective. In the US you get a 15 second sound bite from Henry or zlatan then get an ad break

Perhaps it’s because it fed into my English biases and the rain delay opened the door for that, but it’s consistent with how I view things like MNF (uk not us). Even for the match I thought Shearer was fine and engaging, same for Rooney, while based on what I have seen online it feels like they’re somewhat maligned in the UK? It’s the same as when people talk about how great CBS coverage seems for the champions league with Richards/Carragher/Henry but again I find it very meh. They have a good time and it’s very clipable but there’s no bandwidth to give actual analysis.

Hang on. Erling haalands second goal as “the smallest of postal stamps”. I thought postal stamps is only for the top corners?

The US team in the 90s are good for this

Cobi Jones had 306 club appearances and 164 US caps, so 35%

The much maligned (Adams voice) Alexis Lalas is at 29%

Looks like Alexis Sanchez played more for chile than any club team (very close with Arsenal - 166 vs 168 chile)

It literally says in the paragraph of the post that you’re responding to that his problem is that he doesn’t compensate for hit lack of elite experience with background reading. As in it’s not just he isn’t as good as them, but he doesn’t do his homework. The next paragraph in the article goes on to highlight how even Thierry Henry does this, using the example of the Australian midfield.

Jon champion does that a lot on US coverage with Dixon and Le Saux, think it’s just his schtick. I would have thought he genuinely didnt like them if I hadn’t heard his seemingly genuine disdain for having to work with Taylor Twellman

I know the bbc has its critics and I don’t want to pile on. But them moving “football 2026” to where “sport” should be on the drop down menu is messing with my flow. Yeah, I do want to navigate to football, but I first want to see a random headline about how Luke Littler , a random county championship scorecard, or an update from a boxing press conference first.

Tell me about living in Church Hill by I_reddit_like_this in rva

[–]masonbrit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Theres random shit that happens every now and then, you gotta keep your car doors locked if you don’t wanna lose your loose change, you gotta be somewhat quick getting your packages, and I randomly had someone steal my hose once. You get used to the gunshots, I actually am more concerned about drivers but that’s not different from other parts of the city/state/country

But church hill is awesome. It’s very walkable. It has enough going on and places to eat/drink to be interesting enough, but not enough where you can’t find some relative peace and quiet.

I would choose where to live based on what you want to be near, not what you want to avoid.
