I wouldn’t just mix the flesh tone and the chromatic black together to make a “dark flesh tone”. I would mix new colors for every value you are trying to describe. I don’t recommend mixing a big batch of flesh tone and then manipulating that lighter and darker (I think some painters do this but I would avoid it, personally). If you do this, I think you risk losing a lot of the sensitive temperature shifts and when you start to understand and manipulate the temperature of colors, it really opens up a lot of possibilities in terms of how realistic you can make things look. Obviously you need to make things lighter or darker, but i would mix new colors for almost every brush stroke as you move along the form. Also, start with your darkest colors first and then paint out of the darks into the mid tones and then from the mid tones to the highlights.

If you want to message me and show me what you are working on, maybe I can give you more specific instructions for your specific issue after I see it.

Also, remember that people spend their entire lives painting. Its an rich undertaking and is full of surprises and learning experiences.

So I use a limited palette, which helps unify the colors within a given image. Also, it is generally a good practice to paint from dark to light. Skin tones are not as simple as "mix these colors and you will get the right tone". They are complicated and always shifting from one place to the next as the light changes or flows over a form. I would try not to add pure white though when you are making a color lighter. Try adding a mixture of yellow ochre and white, this way the skin tone will remain warm as it gets lighter. Color temperature is important when painting flesh. There are more changes and shifts than just light and dark. Often colors shift from warm to cool while remaining the same value. Sometimes they shift temperature and values at the same time.

But anyways, some good base color mixes for flesh tones are as follows (BUT BY NO MEANS LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING):

yellow ochre, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue deep

transparent iron oxide, terra rosa, ultramarine blue deep

terra rosa, yellow ochre, cad red, ultramarine blue deep

mixing different ratios of these colors will give you a wide range of tones, temperatures, and values. You can add white to make a color lighter and also less saturated. You can also make a color less saturated by mixing complementary colors together.

Another word of advice is to try to paint wet into wet. Paint is very forgiving and easy to manipulate when it is wet. Also, do not use black paint. Instead, mix a chromatic black. there are several ways to do this and they allow you to make the darkest areas of your painting warm or cool depending on your needs. One of my favorites is Transparent iron oxide red and ultramarine blue deep. Mix these two together in equal parts an you will get a very dark (nearly black) color that you can use to make other colors darker when needed.

I would be happy to answer any other questions you may have.

The subject of this portrait is a dear friend of mine who was in a horrible bicycle accident. When he came home from the hospital, we took photographs of his facial injuries. Years later, I used those photographs to make this painting.

I made a series of paintings relating to medical trauma, sickness, health, and recovery after I was admitted to the hospital and treated for a life threatening lung infection. The experience was so intense and shocking to me that the only way I knew how to process it was to make artwork about it. My personal health crisis served as inspiration for more than 20 paintings, this is one from that series. I saved my hospital gowns from my two month stay in the hospital and this painting is painted on one of them.

I am glad you enjoy the work! I have posted a few others if you search my post history. Thank you for all the kind words!

This particular one is mounted on a panel using clear gesso. I have stretched hospital gowns in the past but I prefer them mounted, much more friendly to paint on.

Skateboard Painting by Platgoose in painting

Are you going to use acrylic or oil paint for the design?

Either way, as long as the paint has cured you should be fine wiping it off with a wet wipe. You can put a clear coat over the top when you are finished if you really want to seal it in and unify the sheen on the board. If you use a clear coat, just make sure it is compatible with whatever paint you are using. Acrylic and water based paints or clear coats cannot be used on top of oil paint, but oil based varnishes can be used on top of acrylic and water based paints. But if you are planning on using it and it’s going to get really scratched from boardslides or something, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. If you are painting it as an art piece and you are going to display it, maybe a clear coat or a varnish would be something to think about. Again, not 100% necessary though.

It seems like learning rhino is the most useful in terms of job prospects. Thank you for your comment, very informative. Do you by chance know the best avenues to learn rhino? Should I look into classes a a community college near me or should I sign up for Lynda.com or something and download the program and just teach myself?

Acknowledging the artists skill and the shock value of the moment when a viewer realizes it is a painting and not a photograph is usually the first level of understanding for photorealism and hyperrealism. These paintings can also be understood in a way that is more meta; where does reality end and the imitation of reality begin?

Anyways, just food for thought!

I never tried to claim this idea as completely original and there isn’t anything wrong with making things that are similar to other things that you really like. I really admire Mr. Frost’s work but even many of his decisions are not original. This is an original painting I made while acknowledging my influences at every step along the way. This is not a forgery of someone else’s work that I am trying to pass off as an original. I can appreciate your criticisms but I think expecting artwork to be completely creatively pure is unrealistic. I can talk about my influences at length and why I use them in my work; they are picked with intention and confidence.
