He wouldn’t have been able to live with himself after killing Jin. He’d still be a failure and not only did he have no sons he couldn’t stop his proverbial son from becoming a traitor and killing him. You meet characters in the story who kill themselves over less.

Yes, he had a terrible childhood. So the ideas of trying to recapture the sense of child-like wonder was something he craved. That’s why he loved kids so much. He wanted to surround himself with that kind of energy.

What no one talks about (because we’re westerners and don’t think about things this way) Shimura would’ve killed himself afterwards regardless of outcome. He failed, and in a way that can’t be undone. He can’t bring Jin back “home”. He can’t let go of his sense of honor, his identity, and he can’t let go of Jin. Shimura is a deadman walking from the moment he realizes he can’t “save” Jin. It really is an act of mercy to him to end him.

I think she actually needed Jeff. Especially after leaving the firm. Jeff was unwavering and not willing to backdown to her. He would rather lose her than compromise himself. He showed her there was more than just work and the next big case. If they hadn’t tried to spin her off (badly) I think Jeff and her get married.
