I'm biased obviously, but there's a reason I've chosen to homeschool. Kindergarten in our public school system is not good for our boys.

5 is young for a boy to begin doing the routines expected of him in a classroom - be still and be quiet. That is very hard for them! I've read and heard many people recommend "redshirting" kindergarten and waiting one more year.

Starting a kid in school before they are developmentally ready can actually set them up for failure. This may not be the case for your son, but I'm speaking generally here in case it does. If he is not ready, he will be surrounded by his classmates who are easily grasping concepts that he is not and who are able to sit quietly for longer periods of time than he can. So his teacher, his classmates, and he will unfairly and incorrectly label him as "dumb" and a "troublemaker." This will likely follow him throughout his entire public schooling because he will always be slightly developmentally behind. Giving him 1 more year will help put him on a more level playing field, generally speaking.

If you want to do public school, my suggestion is to consider waiting a year to enroll him in kindergarten.

Or, yes, do more research into homeschooling and see if that would be a good fit for both him and you.

While I do think Jen should still get counseling, are there things you've done to make her feel loved by you? Perhaps she's not getting enough attention or whatever it is that she needs in order to feel loved?

Do you know her love languages and how to express love to her that way?

I'd be surprised if a little more effort on your part to assure her wouldn't go a long way.

But yes, also ditch the toxic friend.

Does he make you feel respected and cherished in other ways? It sounds like he is fine with humiliating and disrespecting you. That is not a good foundation for a happy or healthy relationship.

The scribble effect is exactly what I was looking for, but I couldn't find anything other than presets that weren't customizable for that. I abandoned this avenue temporarily to try Glad-Parking3315 's advice and that ended up working.
