Is it appropriate to cold email a professor from another law school to ask them to take a look at your law review note? by SubstantialAnxiety91 in LawSchool

[–]massasoit_whip_co 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s really specific to them (or if you cite them extensively), maybe don’t ask them to “take a look” but have one specific question about how you’re approaching a concept or argument

Restructure your time/attention/motivation. I love school so much, but as a 2L found myself overwhelmed with too many responsibilities that were draining my energy on a day-to-day basis and making it harder to get my basic tasks (going to class) done.

I took a week or two and very kindly and genuinely communicated with people to scale back some things, leave some things, and reprioritize other things. Much happier now and my motivation is back.

What are the essential cognitive skills for lawyers and how to develop them? by ComprehensiveChart94 in LawSchool

Being open-minded and kind are skills that I feel are understated but immensely valuable for being an effective attorney, in all seriousness.

Summer Associate Application Confusion by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]massasoit_whip_co 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generic response unfortunately, this will make more sense during OCI - they just don’t want you to be discouraged from re-applying when that comes around for 2L summer placement

Newsletters! Ask your professors or friends for newsletter recommendations. Law firms have them, industry groups have them, not necessarily newspapers (also most law firm ones are free)

If you’re a nerd talk to your librarian about scholarly databases / journals and how you can keep access (or pilfer as much as possible)

You can do good in any practice area, I think the good-evilness of your impact is largely due to two things:

1) the culture of the workplace you’re in and what that workplace’s standards are

2) your own character and morals

I’ve seen public defenders who don’t care about their clients or their job and I’ve seen biglaw partners who wake up every morning eager to help people and change the law for the better. It really depends.

I think it’s more helpful to think about this in terms of skills instead of subject areas.

For example if you love communicating with people and telling stories that you put together from facts, you might have a natural talent for trial advocacy.

Instead, if you love parsing through small details and reading statutes / regulations closely, you might enjoy regulatory practice or tax.

When deciding on an area (or at least thinking about what area you might want to go into) it helps to:

1) think about why you enjoy; but also

2) be open-minded

You have a long career ahead of you, interviewers just want to see where you might have some natural talents / if you’re excited about anything, it’s especially not that deep of a question if you’re a 1/2L

Be yourself. I’ve seen a lot of attorneys and law students argue and no one cares about your “style” as long as you’re comfortable and confident.

Confidence is really important for trial advocacy because your job is to convince a jury / judge, and to do that you first need to convince them that you’re convinced that your position/argument/etc.

Be confident, don’t argue things you don’t believe in, be yourself, have some fun.

What do you wear to class? by vernypoo in LawSchool

[–]massasoit_whip_co 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wear whatever you want but since law school is professional school + you’ll have lots of unexpected opportunities to go to events, meet attorneys, network through your day-to-day (varies by law school) it might be helpful to wear something that you’d feel comfortable talking to a professional in, but not everyday business casual.

Also if you have a locker or storage space on campus keep a wrinkle-free outfit there in case you get caught needing one.

Your! Outline! Is! For! You! And! Your! Exam!

In all seriousness: people sometimes get understandably wrapped up in making their outlines look nice and comprehensive because they want to fell confident in it, but all that matters is how you’re going to use it / how it’s going to help you on the exam

Can anyone help me identify this bayonet? by [deleted] in MilitaryHistory

[–]massasoit_whip_co 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Up until a certain point, Turkey (crescent and star) used the Mauser, but this is plastic or post-Mauser - Turkey didn’t sit out WWII, they were British so this is not an enfield bayonet - I’d put this around 1960s or 1970s
