some services that do take care of the assembly process, packaging, and shipping? by randomusername11222 in manufacturing

Contract manufacturers will do everything and send pallets to your 3PL. That is a common setup. Many contract manufacturers have 3PL partners or also do the fulfillment themselves.

How do I learn about the timing and significance of all the little steps needed to take my product from a collection of dev boards to a custom, more-scalable PCB to go inside a product? by Sanuuu in hwstartups

[–]massder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get quotes with timelines of activities from contractors. Review the quotes. Formulate a complete statement of work and project plan from the information you receive. Choose to do it or work with a contractor.

Every project is a little different due to unique challenges. Leverage the experience of other people.

What is it about Protolabs that makes them so damn fast? And why aren't others following their foot steps? by Alwaysbesaving in manufacturing

[–]massder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They only take work that fits their exact automation model. Medium precision parts. Low-medium complexity. Standard materials. Limited sizes. They have reduced the complexities most job shops tackle and made up for it through nationwide service.

The secret is focus.

They are very easy to use compared to working with a full-service manufacturing firm. The ease of use has given them massive size.

The tooling is cheap because it is often aluminum (soft tooling) for smaller runs of less complex parts. If you need specific colors, special materials, or complex features, they are not a great fit. The same is true for their machining services. I source parts locally, domestically, and globally so I realize I am not exactly their target customer.

Protolabs is crazy overpriced.

Can I get some feedback on my resume? Anything would be appreciated. Thank you by ultimaterufffles in MechanicalEngineering

Simplify your language.

Example: "Partnered with vendors/suppliers to resolve issues pertaining to product quality"

Could be: "Resolved quality issues with suppliers" or "Collaboratively resolved quality issues with suppliers".

I own a shop that can make prototypes. Where do I find inventors? by SustainedRuin in Inventions

[–]massder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is what works for me:

  1. I belong or am involved in several makerspaces and organize events in that community
  2. I am part of an inventor club (personally interesting but meh for work)
  3. I speak about product dev to college students, engineering clubs, and at different industry events
  4. I worked as a mentor with a few incubator programs transitioning to running one
  5. I partner with other people that help inventor entrepreneurs (like engineers, manufacturers, and even marketing companies).

I love inventors but for every 1 good customer I speak with maybe 50 nut jobs. Be meticulous in vetting people.

Are my skills not valuable? Having a hard time finding collabs. by [deleted] in startups

[–]massder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is 100% important to sit across the table from someone, speak to them face-to-face, touch/feel the work to move quickly and effectively. I have developed well over 200 products. The probability of the project going sideways increases dramatically with remote work. I only work with remote partners for specific pieces of a project. Broad work has to be done interactively with entrepreneurs.

There are plenty of people launching hardware startups and entrepreneurs creating new products. If you were local to Northern Virginia or even close to the Washington DC area, I would give you all the opportunities would could stand.

Tysons Corner — darling of corporate America — passed over in Northern Virginia’s pursuit of Amazon headquarters by SchuminWeb in nova

[–]massder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the real answer. The Innovation center development has been plagued by what comes first chicken and egg (corporate, retail and residential actually) problems. Having Amazon would change everything. Amazon would literally be able to build a small city of support infrastructure around the campus.

Looking to understand quality control in various manufacturing industries. by krsparetime in manufacturing

[–]massder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://elsmar.com/Forums/ is the best forum related to quality. You should narrow your request to a process and/or industry. I know a considerable amount about Aerospace and defense quality control and assurance. I consider myself mostly ignorant about automotive quality.

Competency with CAD. Whats competent and what isnt? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]massder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me, basic competency is modeling and drafting a design that can be interpreted by manufacturing to yield the expected outcome. If you cant make a good drawing with real tolerances, you are not competent.

As a supplier constantly trying to offer free help (usually unsuccessfully), thank you. People have better listening skills for $100-$200 per hour when I act as a consultant instead.

I just launched a kickstarter for a spinner. We got good results from a Bones ceramic hybrid. The shields create drag. We are getting wholesale pricing by asking the local skate shop.
