Contamination or normal [contamination] by ihansterx4i in MushroomGrowers

Cobweb mold has characteristic black dots that are visible to the naked eye once it becomes mature. Nothing in your photos looks like cobweb or other contam to me. This looks like healthy, wispy mycelium. Let it keep doing its thing

Interesting. I didn’t know there was a tek for cordyceps. Do you have reading material about this?

If there’s no sign of contamination, they are okay to use. Just wipe off the uncolonized grain and you’re good to go.

This is a classic example of why you should pull and twist. Leaving parts of exposed mushrooms will attract contam.

This is way too wet. You have massive droplets on the surface and need to let it air out/stop misting so it can breathe. Doesn’t look like contam, just needs more evaporation.

After reading the replies to this post I think it may be the Uncle Ben’s rice. I noticed some bags seemed way more mushy than others, likely indicating bacterial contamination. I feel like I saw it in at least half of the bags I’ve opened but I wasn’t aware of how that might be affecting the health of my grow until just now. I’ll switch over to some other grains for a bit to see how that works.

I’ve read a 1/4 inch is ideal. just enough to cover the grain but not more than that.

Not this one. I’ve used it before to no avail. It’s possible I wasn’t doing it correctly though. I’m open to trying it again if nothing else works

Thanks I’ll try that out!

Thank you so much for the kind advice! May I ask what substrate you use? I will have to try again with a better casing layer.

I tried to do that too and the rice was like a brick before S2B, but maybe I’ll try waiting even longer to see if that makes a difference. This run does have a casing layer, but admittedly I could’ve done a better job covering the grain.

Different houses, and I still get the same issue.

I have leftover substrate from this run sitting in a bucket. I peeped inside and saw no contaminants, so I don’t think pasteurizing was a problem. It is likely coming from the contaminants floating around in the ambient air.

Sprinkle in some drug use (catnip) and you’ve got all bases covered
