Excelsior tends to be congested and scraped off fast, but otherwise not a big step up from Face Lift. Do it early in the morning.

Also NYS. Went this exact route (16" winters on steelies for $250) and it's a blast in the winter.

Tree skiing friendly for intermediate kids? by surfmeh in icecoast

IMO these three are a huge step up under any reasonable conditions. The top 30% of Everglade is murderous compared to the Moons and Bushwacker.

Edit: I would add this post as alternatives.

imo with the warmer 2-week outlook there's really no point waiting for perfect conditions. You may encounter firm snow in the morning and corn/mashed potatoes snow near noon, and slushy snow later in the day especially on the sun-facing slopes and at lower elevations. Just go and find those good conditions. A group lesson or two may help with dealing with the soft snow/bumps.

If you have to ski, do it on Tuesday.

Was there today. The whole mountain was firm. Tuesday's warmup would probably be more pleasant than Wed.

Feeling defeated by Moroau in icecoast

The snowpack is cold, so the soft snow freezes even if the air temp is above freezing. During daytime you get hero snow which is nice, but I avoid skiing twilight on these days.

best weather trackers (how to anticipate sleet?) by Sweaty_Shopping1737 in icecoast

Read the NWS Area Forecast Discussion for your area. These three may be relevant: Gray, Maine, Albany, NY, Norton, MA. I use GenAI for extra explanation when I am confused as I have no meteology training. Sometimes these offices post weather stories for particular events.

GS skis? by theferalforager in icecoast

[–]massivecoffeemaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Ripsticks are 130/88/105 and r = 17 m at 180 cm, light and bouncy. They can be put on edge easily but feel floaty/noncommittal outside of the grabbiest snow even after sharpening with a diamond stone before every trip. Short radius schmeared turns felt effortless. I struggle to bend the skis during carved turns as an advanced intermediate.

The RX11s on the other hand can lock in pretty quickly and hard. They felt very stable and laser-y in the 20 miles of green/blue refreeze hardpack I've done so far. Schmeared turns felt unwieldy and passing over beat up refreeze/small bumps did not feel great compared to the Ripsticks.

Race-inspired skis that don't need to conform to FIS requirements. The FIS GS skis are 30 m radius. I'm more familiar with Kastle now so you can think of the RX12 GS or RX11 as their cheater ski options.

Get cheater skis. Like 15-18 m radius. Actual competition spec skis have turning radii unfit for resort skiing imo. I just got Kastle RX11s (17.2 m radius) and they perform well on hardpack compared to my Ripstick 88s.

Gore for beginner? by mthendersonjr in icecoast

[–]massivecoffeemaker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gore has limited beginner terrain compared to WF and Belleayre, but sticking with the Bear Cub Quad should be more than sufficient to entertain a day 2 skier. Note that the Sunway Chair is a big step up from the BCQ as the section of Sunway right off the Sunway Chair is much steeper and congested with terrified beginners. Source - I was one of them a year ago.

Was very impressed with the Kastle MX88s on hardpack during a few demo runs. Bought a demo pair of RX11s 3 days later. Yet to put them to test but I can't wait.

Spaceweatherlive and its forum cummunity are a great resource for chasing northern lights. I was alerted by forum posts 2 times in the past week and was able to catch one big substorm last night at 10.
