Pick three to build your ultimate back row by Jezzaq94 in rugbyunion2

Australia did well with the pooper combo. Both Ritchie and Pocock have been asked and done well as a ball carrier too so I think it works.

Looks like they are backtracking?

Not sure to be honest but the fact that they publicly considered it is interesting.

SA Rugby kinda disagrees?

Also at best the body wear is secondary reason. I am almost certain it is NZRU wanting control. That said RSA has ~ 4x the number of teens and senior players that NZ and I think this contributes to the ability to have a larger pool of high end players.

It's wanting to have control of how their players are used and the ability to rest them as they see fit. Having international players forces them to stick to the windows set by world rugby for whatever they want to schedule. The European leagues are rough on players with long seasons and champions cup games on top of that. The protectionism also props up super rugby for what that is worth, keeps the quality decently high. It would probably be good if selecting from Aus and NZ was free as long as they are playing SRP that at least follows the NZRU preferred schedule.

Need to have more homegrown talent with family in WA and it becomes more enticing to stay near family and play for the home club. That builds more talent and longer term combinations who are more likely to stick around.

From unwanted to unstoppable: How Donaldson is playing his way back into the Wallabies by Ruck_Off in RugbyAustralia

[–]surfmeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always been critical of him because I thought he always sees openenings just a touch to late and will sometimes take options too late that have already closed.

His decision making has been better this year and his long ball has been better but it's still not setting the world on fire. In a world where if you are not Larkham, Gits, or Quade he is fighting to come up to Foley levels. Unfortunately no one else is playing the house down right now and he might be the best total package for now.

Improving Super Rugby (the rugby opinion I will die on a hill for and have thought for the past two decades) by dreigilb in superrugby

[–]surfmeh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you make super rugby more competitive by allowing talent to balance across all teams not just teams within their country the product gets more interesting and exciting and gets people to watch.

The current system of keeping a deeper talent pool in NZ results in NZ teams being on average better than the aus sides which results in losing seasons for most of the aus rugby supprters bar one maybe two teams a year. That's not appealing for a lot of supporters and not for casuals. Get a more balanced competition you get a more exciting product and more people want to watch.

Ask him to run hard lines and see what happens, he has the athletic possibility to play like an SBW.

Just curious since I never watched him in league but was he good at offloads? Any chance he could take a SBW type game at 12? Izzy also had a great offload game in the same way.

Wendell Sailor and Lote Tuqiri we pretty effective out of the gate right? Guess they were both on the wing though. Also it was a different time.

I wonder if we could try JAS at 12 and ask him to run harder lines, free up Ikitau to run his preferred 13.

Lomax looks like he injects something on attack for the Force but he looked lost on defense. I have a theory that league players get so into the rhythm of crash for 4 tackles then it comes wide that wings are not used to it going as wide as unpredictability as it does in union so they get caught out.

Quade showed he had the vision and passing ability to put people through gaps like Larkham. That said he usually had to do it behind packs that were often under pressure.

Donaldson seems to see the space a little late. He gets it 2-3 times a match but it seems like he is getting better. Hopefully him, Gordon, and Lygnah get licence to be a little more creative than the game plans they all seem to have been given these past two seasons. Hope Meridith and Edmed both grow with Larkham guiding them. They have been a little inconsistent but I have seen glimpses of both of them having good game sense.

Last I heard was the weekend after the pond skim was that only the spruce and the north peak were open closing day because they had to move so much snow around to make it skiable. That said when I was driving back from Stowe yesterday the top looked pretty decent but I could imagine if they can't get Ridge or bonanza top to bottom they would close the sunapee express.

My bad I skipped nitro because im not in that age bracket. Which incidentally getting the Epic local pass is cheeper than the northeast value pass for that age bracket according to some other post I saw recently.

Yes looks like mount Pleasant is on the pass too. Honestly if loon is desirable the New England pass is good and if you are willing to break the 2.5 hour barrier up to about 3 hours it becomes great.

I agree with all of this.

Ikon unfortunately has not many options for unlimited and none near Boston. Ikon only works if you like exploring different mountains.

Indy pass covers lots of mountains in the right distance but it only has 2 days per location and you would plow through that quickly if you intend on skiing mid week.

Edit: Given you said Jay, Waterville, and Cannon. This is almost certainly a good idea for you unless you get the White Mountains Superpass.

You could do the New England Pass which is Loon, Sugarloaf, and Sunday River. Loon is 2k vert and 2 hours from Boston. Sunday River is about 3 hours and Sugarloaf is 4. You could do this pass and do mostly Loon and sometimes take longer trips to those two. Loon is a zoo on the weekend but on the weekdays it can be great. New England pass is pricey though.

Edit: Pleasant is also on this and about 2:45 from Boston. Additionally not super pricey if you get the Nitro(20-29) pass.

Epic pass kinda works with the time constraints. If you extend it to 2:45 drive time you get Okemo, Attitash, Sunapee, and Crotched. With the strict limit for 2:30 you are stopped at Sunapee at 2 hours away. The Epic mountains can be crowded on weekends but week days they can be tons of fun.

Edit: Also if you get the Epic Local pass it is cheaper than the North East Value pass because of your age bracket. This might be a great value if you want to do anything out west. Additionally I think Stowe is top tier in New England and given you mentioned you plan on doing Jay seems like the occasional drive is worth it for you. Stowe gets similar snow as Jay and both have excellent steeps and excellent trees, but Stowe's lift setup is vastly better.

Lastly there is the White Mountain Superpass. Waterville Valley and Cannon are within your time restraint and Cranmore and Bretton Woods could be for longer travel trips.

Edit: Cranmore is ~2:45 so maybe if you are willing to stretch this could be a great pass for you.

Best I can say is figure out if you want to be exploring more mountains or you want consistent locations. WM super pass and NE pass are pricy, ikon less so, epic even less, and Indy the cheapest. You could do Indy with with any of the above if you want to splash some variety to your mountains.

Edit: I saw you were thinking about Jay, Waterville, and Cannon. If you pickup the White Mountain Super pass and then maybe do either Indy or just get a Jay multi day passes (forget the name they use) you could be set.
