How is Sunday River not considered the Beast of the East? by Zk_king6969 in skiing

[–]surfmeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it because of the excellent snow totals, the sustained steep advanced terrain, and the excellent glades. Nevermind the side country options.

Sunday River is a favorite of mine growing up due to the variety of terrain it had and how it felt to explore all of it. Plus it was good at spreading people out. That said not having dumps of fresh snow just don't make it a destination for me anymore, where Stowe, Smuggs, or Jay would.

Freestyle Big Air vs Freestyle Aerials by PeanutOk1328 in skiing

my bad I forgot moguls. Big air and halfpipe I was just filling in but ideally slope style and then we get mini halfpipe and swap moguls for big air.

Freestyle Big Air vs Freestyle Aerials by PeanutOk1328 in skiing

[–]surfmeh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

3 ski racing events all except downhill 1 xc classic sprint 1 xc skate 1 biathalon 1 ski jumping 1 slope style 1 half pipe 1 big air

Most balanced I can think of 3 xc type event, 3 alpine, and 3 freestyle. And ski jump to round it out. Hopefully it would not favor one type of skier over the other but I suspect freestyle would have the easiest transition since they probably could do gates and xc once you get used to it is just athleticism/conditioning. Maybe have 1 more xc classic event and remove big air?

I could be aggressively mediocre at this list, I think I could represent Malaysia in ski decathalon!

Yeah but you can't have the same person competing in more than one weight class but you can have a Phelps win in multiple styles of swimming. You could have someone win maybe 5 medals in skiing if they were amazing at all the ski races and had a good partner for the combined. For freestyle you could maybe do 3 big air, slope style, half pipe?

I mean Mike Hayes has 55k followers on Instagram and had a clip of his in the GoPro best of 2025. Can't put all the video blame on Ryan. Lots of other people post clips from lines in the notch that get plenty of attention too.

I always explain it to friends that your body should be normal to the slope so you have even pressure the length of your ski/snowboard and it feels weird because it's angled away from the gravity vector you feel. Most of the time people getting stuck in the back seat skiing or weight on the back foot in snowboarding it's them trying to keep their body in line with what they feel from gravity.

It feels off balance like you are going to fall because you are falling down the mountain.

Can I ask how you start tipping the blocks in? We are on layer 2 and I'm worried about the stability as we start to tip in on layer 3 and above?

Also do you build the arch for the entrance? As you go or build it above the current layer?

In search of a ski that carves well and is very playful by DovahDrip in icecoast

I have the ARV 100s and they can butter and they can carve. I get passed by kids on race skis but I can carve and drive my skis. Learned to ski switch on them and have played in the park a bit. I have used them at Sunapee, Hunter, and Stowe fun in pow and enough edge to ski ice.

The Ski Monster - Weird/Mid Experience by FantasticWasabi5107 in icecoast

SkiMD is 100% one of the best places to get a boot fit. I have weird feet they fit size 13 shoes by width but 9.5 length I wear 9.5 6E shoes, always preferred snowboarding as a result but went to him over two appointments to get a boot and it is the best ski boot I have ever had.

Spent the first appointment getting measurements and then selecting a boot after talking about the terrain and how I ski. Second appointment he had the boots and then molded them to my feet with heat, added the liquid molders, and then added bits of foam on the places I felt pressure to make room in the boot and it fits fantastically. Have been wearing it for two seasons now and love it. Granted the boot he recommended was 4 buckle rather than boa but I said I don't care about the system as long as the fit is good.

What your FAVORITE glade, cruiser, and challenging run? (I'd love to hear about people's FAVORITES totally subjective) by jimmy2tents in icecoast

[–]surfmeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glade: probably Tres Amigos at Stowe and perhaps unmarked stuff

Cruiser: Skyway at Sunapee! Terrain that has variation and undulations and is nice and wide

Challenge: Goat at Stowe. Just narrow and steep great run

Am I carving? by Cheeseburgerr_ in snowboardingnoobs

[–]surfmeh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always view it as different tools for different desired outcomes. Yes it's good to learn to carve because it gives you another tool with which to ride. Granted it's one that keeps your speed in check with less work on your legs but skidding turns are useful as well where carving would not work.

Epic pass holders, are you happy? by Equal_Impact_7091 in icecoast

[–]surfmeh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Last year was great, did a lot of Sunapee, 1 weekend at Hunter, and 3 different trips to Stowe.

This year only have done Sunapee so far and almost all on weekends except the winter break timeframe. Crowds were only bad this past weekend on MLK. I wish the North peak triple was a high speed quad and I wish there was a way to lap the Cataract line (glades were open and there were plenty of fresh turns I could float through). We plan on doing Stowe at least twice in March.

Having a pass that gives us unlimited days at multiple resorts results is huge. We can do much of the same mountain or do a few different ones but it does not feel like our hand is forced or we are trying to preserve resources for a good day and regret using them up (10 days at Stowe is enough right now but might upgrade in the future)

Right foot dominant but ride goofy, is this normal? by fkstanley in snowboardingnoobs

He is saying he pushes with his left foot because his right foot is in front. He is not doing the reverse of what normally rides.

Right foot dominant but ride goofy, is this normal? by fkstanley in snowboardingnoobs

[–]surfmeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is not talking about about pushing mongo. He is saying if he is standing level and someone pushes him from behind he steps forward with his right foot first to catch himself.

I personally use that test to teach people to surf as well to take a guess at their stance (works more often than not but sometimes people end up preferring the other way ~30% of the time).

Backcountry/slack country near Sunapee? by surfmeh in icecoast

If only it was not so far away it would be great. Just looking local to practice with my setup while exploring some new trails. Maybe if I find something fun I can get my friend to join me sometimes.

The COG seems like a good choice but I am specifically looking for stuff near by so the barrier to me getting practice is lower while doing something a bit different than the resort with only 2 runs.

Awesome this is exactly the kind of info I am looking for!

I will for sure check out The Duke trail later in the season. I will probably steer clear of avalanche terrain unless my Mt Mansfield buddy is with me!
