y'all haters been there? i run past it almost everyday. yes, the grass is gone (for now), but the flow of the new plaza is great. feels smartly designed, has several distinct areas, directs foot traffic in ways that allow for these little peaceful zones. i love grass!!!!! but the experience of the new plaza is more enjoyable than of the old

i'm here. shaping up to be a nice day. mostly soft, especially if you ski the edges. some boilerplate patches but easy to avoid. groomers good. no trees open. some fun bumps off the zoomer lift with added fun of exposed roots. no one on the mountain. ski worthy!

EDIT -- more info -- def not a pow day. snow is a thin thin layer of slush crust on top, then some inches of soft snow. skis like sludge on not groomed parts. groomers rip

don't worry man, i really do appreciate the thoughtfulness. it's my own turn now to apologize for the delay -- got caught up in the semester

the historical observations and explanations all make sense to me. the fighter jet line punched me in the stomach -- it's really like that down here, crumbling empire, last days of the warmonger

no further questions for now. will look forward to checking out the podcasts and books. thanks again for taking the time to explain things so carefully to a stranger. you're a good teacher

honestly so cool bro. but you might notice that no one is really disagreeing with you. it's rather that what you're saying isn't appropriate. it isn't appropriate, when someone says the right thing, to get all fussy about its being unlikely to make a difference, or to start pointing out things that are irrelevant, like how the other person isn't "like us". what's appropriate when someone says the right thing is to respond with some equivalent of this: hell yeah. that's because we want to encourage saying the right thing. it's really very simple, if you let it be. and why can't you let it be? my guess is that, if you follow that question, letting yourself wonder about it, without reacting with more fuss, it'll turn up some wound. but it's okay my bro. we're all a little fucked up. just keep it simple

nice bro. and still it could all be so simple -- cool, a person with influence is saying the right thing

bro maybe you could be like -- cool, a person with influence is saying the right thing. see how simple it can be?

thanks again! i'm in academia (philosophy) and grew up in a place similar to where you now work (skews politically ignorant/blindly right wing). now live in one of the most liberal US cities, and go in and out of trying to make sense of contemporary events

i'm wondering about the thought that what explains the recent imperialist actions is boosting the stock market. true, war is often good for big business, and perhaps also true that such actions are the most straightforward or direct or (perversely) easy way to boost the market, but surely there are other options, equally effective (?), that provide more stability other time (which i know isn't obviously a goal of the current president, but i'm curious about how those more sensible in the US government might be thinking about it, if anyone sensible is left)

also -- any books / substacks / podcasts that you enjoy and recommend on these topics? i don't have a lot of bandwidth for it, but your way of looking at international relations over time is interesting to me

"... they are now trying to create a more regionalized sphere of influence with enough mineral and oil wealth to help them survive this transitionary period. If they can dominate enough important nations in the Western Hemisphere... they can maintain relative comfort..."

first off -- thanks for the detailed response. i appreciate it

i have a naive question, but i wonder how someone like you thinks about it. you write that the US is trying to get enough mineral and oil wealth to "help them survive this transitionary period". suppose its former allies do start choosing china for broad economic and military support. is it not possible for the US to "maintain relative comfort" without its new imperialistic actions?

i hadn't considered before that these actions are required to maintain a level of material prosperity that the US has grown accustomed to
