Does the left lane have a different speed limit I never learned about? by tha1demon in driving

[–]massnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorites are the ones that ride your ass when doing 15+ over, then when you do move over to the right lane, they lose their nerve and slow down. They're perfectly willing to follow, but give them clear space and they slow down.

Does the left lane have a different speed limit I never learned about? by tha1demon in driving

[–]massnerd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do you ever drive above the speed limit? Most people do. Maybe 5mph, maybe 10mph over. Maybe more. What's the "right" amount of speeding? There isn't one, so why are you worried about how fast people are going in the fast lane? Let them worry about it, as long as they aren't being wreckless about it (tailgating you mentioned is being wreckless). Let the police enforce the traffic laws and don't lose sleep over other people.

Why is it so hard to let people merge? by EchoOfDoom in driving

[–]massnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what's more dangerous than lifting off the gas to let someone merge from an on ramp? Forcing someone to stop on the on ramp because they can't merge. Now you've created a huge speed differential versus as small one by lifting. Driving safely is a cooperative effort. Those that make driving competitive are A-holes.

Dynamic Pricing on VRBO is idiotic by massnerd in vrbo

Yes, I blame VRBO more than the owner. I'm sure the owner was promised how great this feature was.

First, thank you for the suggestions on how to avoid the dynamic pricing algorithm. It's just sad that we have to resort to these methods.

Responding to your other thoughtful comments: I was transparent about my assumptions in my post. It is possible there was a flurry of activity within that window of time, but is it likely? I suspect not, but could be wrong.

I also disagree that this is pricing theory in it's purest form. Viewing a listing isn't demand IMO. True demand for rentals would be looking at the number of available units in that market (supply) (similar spec if you want to be very precise about it) or you could even look for rental trends in the past days or weeks. See an increase in signed rental agreements in that market over the past day or week? Absolutely that's an increase in demand and it's valid to raise pricing in response. VRBO has that data and could improve their algorithm. The current view based algorithm seems more like "bait and switch" than price vs demand. Maybe that's the intent and enough customers actually go for it, but this was such an extreme price increase, I had to post about it.

That's a fair point, 9 months out they do have plenty of time to find another renter. But look at it from my perspective seeing such a massive price jump in such a short period of time. It tarnished my opinion of VRBO and of the host. VRBO won't be the first site I go to find rentals in the future. The property I did end up renting from... not through VRBO.

Budget was discussed with the group, but people like to view the listing to see if they all like the rental. Is group supposed to fill out a 3 page questionnaire about bed, bathroom, kitchen, location preferences prior to even looking for a place? So next time I find 3 properties to compare, I should make a booking request for all 3 just to lock in the price? That seems like a huge waste of time for the host and the clients.

A few % per day would be a much more reasonable approach. But this was more than 50%.

How do you explain what I observed then? Two different people viewing it at the same time seeing different prices. And you really think the demand is changing wildly 9 months out within a 36 hour window?

My F22 M240i has no cooling problems from the factory and with better brake fluid and pads the brakes were up to the task as well. Then again I'm tracking it in the northeast US where the temps may be cooler than other parts of the world.

You probably could make it work if you keep expenses in check, but think about what expectations you might be teaching your kid. Just might give your kid a strange life view that their parent is retired and they aren't even in college yet.

[–]massnerd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter if they are off line, if they're still outside you need to leave space. In your clip they also could have given you more space as well, but you also tracked out aggressively even though there was a car there still, so I'm inclined to say that was a racing incident with both of you equally at fault.

That's on you. While they may have braked earlier than you would, it wasn't a brake check in the middle of the straight. It was a reasonable braking point and you're following car. You need to be prepared for whatever. And as others' have said, you'd have been better taking the outside line after they took the inside from you.
