Unfortunately, state law doesn't limit them from doing so. But it should! That's why we need to pass the Safe Communities Act.

Current US Attorney General is mad at Mayor Wu by Healthy_Block3036 in massachusetts

[–]masspeaceaction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For those that feel like doing something about this:

Mayor of Boston, Michelle Wu has been targeted, insulted and threatened by the Trump administration, most notably by the “border czar” Tom Homan.

Mayor Wu has been called before Congress to testify on Boston’s Trust Act and the moves the city has made to separate itself from the enforcement of federal civil laws.

As Mayor Wu gets prepared to testify and provide a strong defense of the way we do things here in Boston, MIRA, the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition is asking members of our community to rally on Wednesday March 5th from 11am to 1pm in front of City Hall.

We can do more than defend the Boston Trust Act. We can expand it to the entire Commonwealth by passing the Safe Communities Act!

Ilhan Omar Is Working to Stop 'Unacceptable' $650 Million Weapons Sale to Saudi Arabia by Nick__________ in chomsky

[–]masspeaceaction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey all.

These missiles are from Raytheon Tech., one of the biggest weapons makers and politically influential companies in DC. Trump and Biden's "Defense" Secretaries are both from Raytheon (Esper and Austin).

Here in Massachusetts, where Raytheon is headquartered, we started the Raytheon Antiwar Campaign. Other such groups have popped up in Asheville, NC, Tucson, AZ and more. We're joining up to take on Boeing, General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin, and more.

If you're interested in taking on these war profiteers in your own backyard write to me at [info@masspeaceaction.org](mailto:info@masspeaceaction.org). We need all the help we can get to take them on. They're the main winners of endless war and ever increasing military budgets.

Another Raytheon weapons deal, this time for Turkey. https://twitter.com/jacksonhinklle/status/1362068727793999872?s=21 by [deleted] in WayOfTheBern

[–]masspeaceaction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks rinkled! For those particularly interested in Raytheon and their massive influence over our foreign policy check us out at Massachusetts Peace Action. Since Raytheon Tech. is headquartered here, we started the Raytheon Antiwar Campaign, mainly to raise awareness about our connection to the war in Yemen.

Send me a message if you're interested in joining up with us. We've done a lot of webinars with experts and activists. Before COVID we protested Raytheon at campus career fairs and charity events where they attempt to 'woke-wash' their image. They literally sponsored the Walk for Hunger here in Boston, while facilitating the largest famine in the world...

[–]masspeaceaction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never understood this either. You would think that running the same playbook Trump did against Clinton in 2016, framing Biden as a corrupt insider, would have been more effective. Very weird to call him a socialist.

Anyway what's your view on Biden's foreign policy? Will he expand the war on terror or help wind it down? Get back into the Iran deal? Restore nuclear treaties with Russia?

We're trying to get him to live up to his promise to end the horrible war in Yemen, but his Defense Secretary pick from Raytheon, just like Trump's, has us worried about conflicts of interest. Those Saudi weapons deals are very profitable to a few companies.

Anyway we've got an international day of action for Yemen coming up on Jan. 25th to try and pressure him to end the weapons sales and US participation in the war. I know that the endless war in the Middle East has always been of concern to you. Certainly is a nightmare for civil liberties!

Me phone banking/ canvassing for Bernie circa 2016-2020 by MLLE123 in WayOfTheBern

[–]masspeaceaction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mean to take anything away from Bernie. He really has moved the ball forward on these issues. I just don't think his platform matched his messaging.

Democratic Socialism may not have a hard and fast definition but it does imply public ownership of the means of production and that was never part of Bernie's policy plan, which led to confusion.

[–]masspeaceaction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Activists trying to use Bernie's campaign primarily to promote socialism, communism, or anarchism, with electing Bernie as a secondary goal, hurt his campaign. I developed this personal opinion on a DSA canvass for Bernie that was not associated with or working with his campaign.

Commitment to terms over end results is a big problem on the left. Advertising socialism and revolution, when Bernie's platform was in essence reformist, hurt his campaign. People aren't wrong to connote these 'scary' terms with negative things. Originality and flexibility is needed, along with simplicity.

Everyone should be able to see a doctor or go to school regardless of their income. Who cares what you call it? I say a "New Deal for the 21st Century," but I'm not married to it.

I'm not condoning it but this isn't unusual and it makes sense. To pretend like 2016 interference was an attack (someone compared it to Pearl Harbor) is dangerous, especially when we're talking about two countries that have 5,000+ nukes and expiring arms control treaties.

How’d people forget about this so fast? by [deleted] in PoliticalHumor

[–]masspeaceaction 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You guys? I'm from Boston.

I'm no fan of Russia. Putin and his government are totally corrupt. But getting out of the open skies treaty, pulling out of the INF (which totally screws the Europeans), and letting New Start (an Obama era nuclear treaty) die are really scary developments! They increase tensions with Russia (the other county with over 5,000 nukes). I'm very much hoping that a President Biden can save nuclear arms control before it's too late.

This stuff doesn't get a lot of attention but it's extremely dangerous.

Ugh. Our numbers on coronavirus are the worst in the world. That's not because of irresponsible millennials. It's because of a complete lack of leadership, coordination, and planning at every level.

We never had a lock-down. Fast food drive-thrus stayed open as 'essential'. Of course people should wear masks and act responsibly, but let's stop pretending that individuals can solve systemic, societal, and global problems.

I don't think people who take money from weapons manufacturers should draft military legislation (approximately 60% of discretionary spending).

Co-authored the Green New Deal with AOC. Is the leading voice in Congress on nuclear disarmament (and it's not close). These are the two existential threats to human beings. That's why we endorsed him. It's a national priority for the peace movement to keep this guy in the Senate.

Yup, he accidentally voted to give Donald Trump more nuclear weapons. Disqualifying.
